How do you shape a custom guitar neck? He's also got a trick for removing some unwanted sanding marks using a razor blade!

When trying to do it achieve a uniform flat surface or profiling there's this little thing called a guide coat . It guide's you . Cross hatch penciling of the whole piece of wood works too.

Can you imagine?! Having Dan give you pointers as you're building your guitar. "I 'happen' to have a '42 Martin that you can look at while you shape this guitar.

How did u make those neck shaping cauls from body filler? That would make a great video as well. Very important to know how to make something like that.
@keithklassen5320
@keithklassen5320 7 месяцев назад
I don't know how he did it, but if it was me I'd lay some thin plastic film over an existing neck, make a rough caul shape with space between the caul and the neck, then apply the body filler (mixed fairly stiff and thick) to the cauls, and press them onto the existing neck. The plastic film would protect the neck, and you could let it sit and dry like that. You could use basic kitchen cling film, aka Saran Wrap, or maybe a strip cut out of a plastic grocery bag. Basically just something thin and smooth. It's possible that painter's tape might also work, but I'd be a bit leery about that.

It must be great to work in the same building as Dan. I would be asking him so many questions I'm sure he would be fed up with me before to long.

Great mentor. I wonder if he has worked on any Australian made Maton guitars? I have visited the Maton factory in Melbourne Australia. Very impressive acoustic guitars

My biggest critique for that channel is, that we often get teased with interesting instruments and techniques, but rarely see the outcome. Would've loved to see and hear that finished piece! Also I remember the vid about the ceramics guitar. The whole vid was about interesting information and its maker and making process. Then Dan hits the strings and the video faded quickly to an end.

I’ve never been able to use a rasp on the heel/tacón. I’ve always found a chisel and a curved carving knife to be easier for me to work with.

How do you make the neck shapes with Bondo?
@sycamoreguitarworks6367
@sycamoreguitarworks6367 7 лет назад
Oscar Yuan you wrap the neck with clean film(plastic film) first,then you cut some approx. circles on some scrap woods you have,then you put bondo on the back of the neck(which is protected by the plastic film) and the you put your scrap wood on,let it dry and sand off the excess bondo.

The decorative sculpted treatment on the back of the neck between the neck and the head stock that in the video Dan refers to as the "diamond" is commonly called the volute but is often mispronounced. It is mispronounced vo as in the exclamation dUH and lute as in the word cUte with the accent on the second syllable... vuh-lute It is correctly pronounced vol as in the word dUll or vol as in the word dOll and ute as in the word YOUth with the accent on the second syllable ! vull-yute or voll-yute.
