I'm protecting a $500 Küat bike rack. The cheap locking hitch pin they provided with the rack will last about 5 seconds against a pipe attack. The solution I came up with is to use a high quality, mini U-Lock as the hitch pin. These things are designed with dual deadbolts to withstand leverage attacks and at 13mm think, it would take a long set of bolt cutters and a lot of weight to cut. With the location of the pin being so far under the bumper, I'm not sure a thief could position bolt cutters to generate the force needed to cut through it. OnGuard 8013 Bulldog Mini U-Lock is a $30 solution.
Thanks for the idea two years later. I just bought myself a Küat bike rack myself and went to buy a lock just to have something decent at least. But I was looking for a better more robust permanent solution. Imma check this one out.
PACLOCK UCS-80A-250 Pacific Locks makes phenomenal security products for trailering. You can have matching lock cylinders so everything is keyed-alike. i have this and all the locks on my utility trailer using a single high security key.
You missed the main point of security against shearing the lock head off. The locking mechanism on the second pin has a sleeve that goes over the pin shaft itself that takes the sheer off of the small portion of the pin where the lock retains itself and places it on the full diameter of the main pin. Stick a pipe over the second one and try to break it vs the first style you showed. The difference will be dramatic. It will not break in the first place.
Could get the same effect with a grade 8 bolt. Use a magnet pin and hold nut inside the receiver through the back, thread though the inside nut then put 2 nuts on the other side and lock them down. Even tack the 2 nuts with weld. Probably never get it off.
What I did to mine was welded a cylinder type thing on the side where it locks from where the lock barely fits inside to where if they do put a pipe it won’t break it’ll just go around the cylinder
That’s a lot better than what I have. And one more added feature of Your locking pin is; The part with the groove in it which snaps onto the other end is 50% embedded into the tongue where you can put a pipe over it all you want, but you can’t break that part off like the cheap Curt pins can be. What’s the brand name pin? I’d like to buy one.
I was forced to do something similar with my Thule hitch receiver bike rack. There’s a but welded inside the rack and it comes with a bolt instead of a hitch pin to cinch it tightly against the hitch to remove any play. So I bought a long bolt and drilled a small hole near the tip of the threads. Now I have to thread that long bolt into the hitch which takes some time and a quality luggage lock on the end. Hopefully it’s enough to slow thieves down.
Just weld something near the lock in the hitch were they can't stick the pipe nd something in the front that way it will not be posible to stick a saw and will be fine
Pins don't easily come out once a head or tail is sheared. Before it is likely to slip out, Itd need to have been wiggling around for quite a few starts, turns, & stops. So you likely weren't paying much attention, or you grossly over stressed the pin cause a different type of failure. Did you recover the pin after it broke loose?(who am I kidding people who blame anyone but themselves are gonna claim: "the pin was stolen & that's how I didn't endanger anyone. It was the thief's fault!!" Lol
My best friend has always loved the bed of my pick up. Probably due to those long rides in the country. Anyway, when the weather permits he won't even come inside at night and likes to sleep there. Best of all, when the criminals come, he likes to make 'em shit themselves. I love my buddy. He's my BFF and always has my back.
Well I bought a new truck last year... Same hitch, but bought a new pin. The exact same one, but just new. Still 100% happy woth it! Thanks for the comment
What are you suggesting besides a joke? Let me fill you in on something.....thieves & such don't need RU-vid to figure out how to defeat some device or tech. It might be enjoyable to imagine they're dumb but the reality is that they're not only stealing cause theyre unable to work due to laziness or their lack of brains...they simply have disregarded our societies ethics/morals in order to profit in minimalist amount of time × effort(people do this on a daily basis yet aren't jailed as they aren't caught or their act while immoral is not a crime yet.) Hell, ever noticed that some people never get their stuff stolen? While others it is almost constant? Maybe just maybe its retaliation......? Just something to consider.
This has a 12k lb capacity. If that’s the 3in shank B&W, it has a 21k lb capacity. Wouldn’t you want a pin that is as strong or stronger than your hitch?
Guess I never thought about that. "A thief doesn't carry tools" and "90% of theft is opportunistic" problem solved - I no longer need to buy insurance nor lock anything!
Not most but lots of crack peps tend to bring a tool bag. Just saying. I'm in oakland ca and they strip cars next to my camper all day. The put in over time hrs to get it done quick. When they are done they pull the car shells in the middle of the street and call the cops so the can take it away. That's how they get rid of their trash. They fill the empty cars full of trash. These dudes are very resourceful. So best of luck with the no wrench thing.
you know what would make your first lock pin work? Weld a thick walled, close fitting 2" long section of pipe at the hitch bolt hole. Now you slide that big pin through the hole, attach the lock, and the entire lock body is inside the pipe, fully protected from being bent off. ...even weld a gusset on the pipe to make it stronger and also prevent a pipe from gripping it.
Awesome idea! I'm gonna do that but make it a bit longer, just enough to fit a 10mm hole and a (non Masterlock) padlock to prevent access to the low security hitch pin lock with a tall shackle padlock. Just another layer.👍🍻🤠🇦🇺
IMO it's BS that B&W doesn't have an option to get 4 locking bolts (all keyed the same) when you purchase these. That's why I like the Weigh Safe design much better.
I ran a 5/8'' bolt through the hole, jammed two nuts on there, blind-pinned the nuts, then rounded off the outside nut with a grinder. I wouldnt trust that hitch pin, if a thief's got a pipe he can also get an adjustable wrench and have it in a few seconds more.
shepherdbrooks the B&W fosent come off like that... It only rotates around. They could steal the pins but that's much cheaper than replacing the hitch!
I forget what make my hitch is but it has a hole drilled below nut for a cotter pin in threaded section.Isn't much but one more thing the thief would have to get past It could even be drilled larger for a sping tension spring or small lock
12" braided stainless cable. Thread it through the cotter pin holes and put the loop ends around the aero lock. It won't keep some jerk from cutting it and taking the pins, but will keep your jokers passing by from nabbing them.
It’s ironic. The simplest solution is if you don’t have a trailer on the truck take the hitch off. I know everybody loves the convenience of always having it available. But if you don’t want the thing stolen, take it out of the receiver. Lock it inside the vehicle in a storage compartment or something. Where they can’t see it if they don’t see it they won’t know it’s there.
Just get a grade 8 bolt with a nylon locknut on other side it'll tale 2 wrenches to remove ,you can make it even tougher get a socket head bolt that requires a allen wrench and save a pile of money over those fancy locks and be more secure.
@@bizzle4819 You are right on most receivers but some allow it to ride up and slip off I noticed they sell a plate for those people having that receiver. My complaint if it is one is the weight loosens my anti rattle lock pin. I’ve torqued to spec and just tighten the hell out of it and it comes loose. I blame the pin.
This all true,,butt lol you can just break the trailer hitches to remove trailer from hitches just as easy, this there a way to lock the trailer and ball hook up
Het rid of that sheetmetal bumper and get a real tow bumper, better yet weld one up yourself. Then get the ball you need, weld it to the bumper, or tighten the nut and then weld the nut to the threads on the ball, problem solved. Stop playing with trash, go old-school and make it to where they have to steal the truck to get the hitch. I swear kids these days never think of substance, just flashy looks.
You failed to point out the other feature of this locking pin, it doesn’t look to me like anyone could break off the lock end due to the way it inserts through the hole in the receiver. All of the other locking pins due just attach to the tip of the pin.
Fwd:Look at this on eBay rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F223870538354 No Rattle Locking Hitch Pin. The typical dog bone style by REESE was defeated in seconds with a plastic PVC pipe due to the plastic internal parts.
Yes they can, pull 3 clips and pins and its gone unless you buy the cheap locking pins for that also as this new threaded one won't work for those holes.
@@mikethompson2007 wrong Mike... The ball doesn't come off of this hitch lol it rotates around the drop... Its either steal the whole hitch or nothing, or of course someone could steal just the pins themselves.
um ok... but someone can still just take the 3 pins out from the swivel part. sure they cant just take your ball mount out and and mount it in their receiver but they can just hook up the chains and take your shit. if they want your trailer they will take it.
You believe a thief wont have a 16mm wrench with him ? You believe a thief doesn't watch RU-vid ? Thief are always ignorant but they aren't all stupid !
Theives are lazy and want a quick in and out. I'm not sticking around for a hitch that the pawn shop will give me $50 at the most for. It's just not worth it.
7425kevin doesn’t matter. Stealing those other three pins on the ball mount is just more of a nuisance than anything. They may pull those three pins but the ball mount isn’t gonna slide off the hitch unless the whole thing’s removed from the receiver tube.
@@seeingred1990 Proper word for it is "SLIDE PIN" Keeps the swing arm from detaching from the unit itself! I totally get it wasn't aware that BW made it like that UNTIL I went back and watch it again. So why such the big deal being made over someone elses minor mistakes Geesh!!!!!!
Topdog Mechanic, I think it all falls under the saying- think before you speak. Or even better yet, read through the rest of the comments. It’s already been said.
People who steal hitches, etc will also have wenches with them. Cause they know people who are tooooo cheap to buy a hitch pin locks will use a nut and bolt to secure the hitch. So your concept not able to take or unlock your hitch due to the threaded head is not secured as well.
this guy is obviously bored off his ass... Gates, get off your ass and make some videos!!!!!!!!! Contribute something positive or shut the hell up asshole!!!
@@thekeatons4 The video was very helpful. I just bought a tow and stow, and I'm doing the silent pin like you. I think a little grease will help prevent corrosion. Taking the hitch off at least once a year for cleaning might help too. And for those saying, "Take the hitch off, and you won't have a problem", we bought a tow and stow so we wouldn't have to take it off all the time. Slowing thieves down deters them. Many of these types of crimes are so called crimes of opportunity. And NOT, the work of a "hitch thief", although I'm sure they exist. Thanks for the video.
