The brass-sorting by squeezing is brilliant.
@robsciuk729
@robsciuk729 Год назад
Headstamp sorting is secondary, but a desired goal of mine. Sorting mixed range brass reliably would be a primary goal, and problematically, case dimensions pose some issues when dropping the brass onto the machine from a Dillon collator. I have used a Raspberry PI with image recognition software and a bounding box algorithm to reliably size cases, and that seems to work well. I guess what I'm saying is ... WELL DONE! You have solved some difficult problems, and the case "squeezer" is a stroke of brilliance.

In grain elevators we had a similar arrangement to position the spout to the capture port for individual bins in order to segregate grain deliveries. We called that "the Cupola" but I think "Distribution Plate": would be a better name in this case.

Wow! Great project. I built a case feeder for 9 and 380mm using some files from the "Shoebox feeder" video here on RU-vid. It works well. This sorter would be such a great time saving project for anyone that likes to cut and resize 223/556 into 300 Blackout cases. Some cases are preferred over others, the rest end up at the recycle business. I also have Raspberry Pi, and a couple of Dell Thin client mini computers. :) thanks for all your hard work.

Love it. I’d definitely be interested in printing and bolting one together once you get around to releasing it. Sure beats my method of a big bucket of brass, Dixie cups for sorting, mark 1 eyeballs , and hours of my time. It’s a constant battle of available time vs. my ocd for having sorted brass before I reload. But it sure is nice having consistent OALs and my reloading runs are much smoother. It doesn’t matter much on my Mark7, but on manual progressives like 550s, 650 and 750s - sorted brass gives you a consistent feel. So you can tell in the stroke when something’s wrong. Not so much when it’s just random range pickup. Plus you can sort out all that crappy stepped brass.

Thanks Rob! In regards to my "releasing it", it is "released" as it is open sourced and all the 3d models, code and electronics info is available. That said, everything you need to get a working version running is available currently. @@sjseth-builds Woo hoo! Looks like Christmas came early this year. Thanks for all the hard work you put into it. This is one I kept turning over in my head of 'wouldn't it be great if' - and I figured maybe it would be my path into Arduino as a way of getting it done. But the part I thought would really be the time sink was the image recognition / pattern matching to make the sorting decision. After seeing you document your journey and how many re-starts and direction changes you had on the physical sorting method - with a skill level beyond my own - it made me realize this project was far , far larger than I had thought.

I'm not an engineer, so you can take this with a grain of salt but wouldn't it be better to have it so that the camera lens faces down and the headstamp facing up? Also, doesn't using a vertical feeding system increase the chance of brass nesting with pistol calibers?
@sjseth-builds
@sjseth-builds Год назад
The issue is in the difference in size of the various cartridges. 223 is quite a bit longer than 9mm. This means, you have to refocus or change camera positions with cartridge changes. Nesting shouldn't be an issue if you are sorting brass of same cartridge type. This sorter isn't designed to sort 9mm from 45.. it is designed to sort Federal 9mm from Winchester 9mm (headstamp). Ideally sideways would be the best approach and something I am working on in a future version.

I unfortunately do not have a 3d printer is there a possibility you will sell the printed parts with the list of parts i need to purchase to build?
@sjseth-builds
@sjseth-builds Год назад
I would love to be able to do that but can't really do it at this time. There are some services which can do the prints (like craftcloud3d.com/) but they are a bit expensive and it would end up costing near $100. At that price you might as well invest in a cheap 3d printer like this one: www.amazon.com/ELEGOO-Motherboard-Removable-Impresora-220x220x250mm/dp/B09B6TPWCV . Thanks for your interest in this project though. I do expect to work out a metal version which may be easier to put together in some respects. I am hoping to build a bit of a community around this and get some other ideas for the mechanical design.

Wow!!! Very Impressive! I am interested in building one if you can share the s'ware bits. I have plendy of 3D Printers already and it would be really cool if you could run this off a Raspberry Pi with a display but laptops are easy too. My benches tend to collect clutter so the smaller the footprint the better. Do vibrations cause issues? Just thinking about all the shaking when I add cases to my current case feeders. If so a separate pole housing the case feeder may keep the vibrations down. Excellent work!!! Thank you for sharing!

@sjseth-builds Год назад
I don't think this would be the best solution for sorting mixed brass as the feed mechanism is really sensitive to case size (width and height). There are several projects out there which basically attach vibration mechanisms to these buckets which give a hands off approach to sorting the brass by caliber for the most part: www.dillonprecision.com/19972

Hi John, I have added the sliced file and the cura project file to the github repo: github.com/sjseth/AI-Case-Sorter/tree/main/3dModels. In regards to those settings , i usually go with a .20 or .24 layer height. I did this one in .16 which took forever (like 2 days) to print. The results were nice but not sure they were much better than the ones I did at .20. My infill was 30% and I put support blocks with 100% infill over the pin areas of the project to increase strength. I am now using Black Jayo PLA+ for everything. I love that filament. It runs well in my printer at 222C with a 65C heat on the print bed. Also since these prints take so long, keeping the room /area temperature consistent really helps to reduce warping One more thing, I have set my support overhangs to 76 degrees. This helps on the horizontal holes
