The good thing is that if you dont want to trigger a BSOD it will probably never happen on linux, not even enough times to count it on your hand on a lifetime. its just there for debugging purposes of your own machine mostly which is a great thing, but not like windows does where a tiny error can make your pc stop instantly and remove all unsaved work
@Redwan777
@Redwan777 7 месяцев назад
It is entirely possible to encounter a BSOD. Maybe it will be very rare on a well maintained distro. My laptop running Arch once had a faulty boot that somehow prevented journalctl from starting after a cold boot and cause a kernel panic. I would have highly appreciated if it gave me a BSOD instead of a very long list of messages in TTY which I couldn't scroll.

The QR code does have some use... As someone that has messed around a good while with Linux's early boot for various reasons, one for various reasons one of the most painful things is not being able to copy/paste, in an environment where you don't have a modern terminal, ssh and most of the times not even internet being able to "copy" lengthty text off of the system is a blessing in its own even if its just whatever is on screen (in fact i can already see myself abusing that as a rudimentary early-boot clipboard instead of going through the "effort" of including qrgen in the initrd) However this look to me like a very early iteration of something useful... Not production ready imho 1) it should be integrated with journald so that an application can set custom text for the qr code. 2) it should allow listing multiple errors and NOT stop at the first one, many pieces of software log a generic "im ded" as first message and then add a more detailed explanation in a following line when they crash 3) in modern linux distros you can break into a limited terminal if the boot fails midway through (how limited depends on the boot phase), i wonder if this is well integrated with it but judging by the rest of the functionality inhave some doubts... 4) the qr overriding text? Seriously? No error handling whatsoever on the lsyout? 5) this doesnt appear to be aimed at replacing the panic, since it couldn't anyways, so why not make it more functional? Use the graphic mode so the qr is not huge and support AT LEAST newlines... Even a scrolling textbox is not that hard at the legeo of system functionality this is meant to kick in at... Idk it seems really rushed and kinda a solution asking for a problem considering it seems barely effective even for the basic task of error reporting to end users... Sheesh that was a lot!
@Aeduo
@Aeduo 7 месяцев назад
I think a lot of this is why its scope in how it's used is so limited. Maybe it'll be expanded and be better with time and able to actually do something other than a frozen desktop when something bad happens. Maybe with a minimal crashkernel or something. As for 2 I don't think that'd be a good idea. It'd be a nuisance to have to advance through multiple error screens, and to even know you have to to get the full error message. Also I think the reason for 5 is because journal messages are all line by line and it's just grabbing the first message and displaying it. No way to generically indicate multiple lines to journald in a way that wouldn't look weird out of context (when not viewed on a bluescreen, but just in a log), or in the case of multiple messages each being a new line, there's no way to know when the last message has output in continuous mode.

To be fair, an error screen in event of an error occuring is something that should have been implemented a while back. Its a relatively simple feature that saves so much frustration for people new to Linux who dont want to be sifting through logs.

A blue screen in Linux is an interesting concept, but I like it! It’s a screen you won’t ever see, but the more fun notes Linux takes from Windows like more Windows 11 application compatibility via wine, what not to do with Linux, the more of a suitable and fun option Linux will be to everyone!

Wow! Thanks for the "feature" systemd devs! It's totally well done and not terrible or useless at all! Can't wait to disable the service unit every time I spin up a new Linux install! Even better: maybe I'll finally decide to put up with a different init system. This is pitifully shoddy, even acknowledging the fact that it is basically volunteer work since it's open source. (It's not like they're inexperienced devs, though, so what gives? Maybe it wasn't meant for release yet and accidentally got merged into one?)

@ToumalRakesh

Apart from the obvious trollbaiting naming, my main problem with this, as with much of what makes up the collection of software under the systemd umbrella, is that this was done by rookies. I can't wait for the overflows, CVEs and other side effects of this silly thing. As you noted, the QR code could be very helpful but again, it's not implemented in a way that's very useful. I am not against replacing the old init system, I am not against replacing things like ntpd, but you gotta make something that's at least as good as the old thing. And when you notice that your time measurements are off because timesyncd relies on the kernel time slewing, or when systemd tells you that you need to run a "reload" command before it can restart a service after the files changed (Why not just reload those files when you notice that they changed??) - you notice that a lot of these programs are poor replacements written by people who have not grasped the extent of the functionality of the programs they set out to replace. A user friendly error notification is a good idea. This implementation is just not up to snuff. It will however appear in all mainline linux distros because "it's systemd". EDIT: Also, great video, as always. I very much enjoy watching you fiddle with things like that.
