This mic is a clear discrepancy of what consumer actually want vs what brands wants and what brands thought consumers want: 1) Brand thought with so many podcast using the SM7B, if they add the Shure logo, it will be free advertising for them. The only reason I'm not buying 6 of the SM7dB and bought 6 Lauten Audio LS-208 is purely because of the logo that Shure added. If I don't use it hang down, the logo will be upside down unless I open the screw and rotate it and screw it back. 2) They beauty of the SM7B is how subtle it was, the black plate makes it look so clean, now they no longer gives you the back plate 3) It's nice that they make the switch easier to access, but what's the point if no one even uses the switches in the first place? 4) Build in Pre-amp 5 years too late, now entry level audio intefaces already have 69 db of gain like the latest generation scarlett, 76 db of gain with the Rodecaster pro II/duo, 80 db of gain with mackie DLZ creator. How about studios? People will studio already have preamp like the 1073 which already have more than enough gain to power the SM7B. 5) The mic color (shiny) and proportion just looks wrong and camera, the elongated design with the tape, just make the mic looks weird, the original SM7B already look perfect, why mess with that? 6)Here's what people actually want, we want the next generation of SM7B -Better sound so we can upgrade our current SM7B to the next generation SM7C. Maybe neodymium magnet? Improved capsule? Better internals? -The wire coming out from the side, we want it to be internal so it will look cleaner on camera -Better yok mount so it's easier to screw -Built in wire mesh pop filter inside the cage for the capsule, perhaps something like the JZ-PF pop filter -We want the rest to be the same, because of the MAYA effect - Most Advanced, Yet Acceptable - To sell something familiar, you must make it surprising and to sell something surprising, you must make it familiar.

Good gravy I LOVE my SM7B. I found that cable quality makes a huge difference in reducing noise. I went with some nice Hosa cables that have great shielding and it improved things over the old SoundWave cables I’d been using for a while. I don’t mind the cloud lifter, and I’ve tried the McBoost which I prefer a bit more. Either way, quality can’t be beat! This is a classic!

The bar for a noiseless cable is low. Other ones had to be defective.

It's nice that the preamp gives you a choice on how much gain you need. Seems like they're taking a page out from sE Dyncaster where they combine their preamp with the condenser. Not a fan of that satin housing with the black logo though. Seems like it could be a finger print magnet.
@selw0nk
@selw0nk 7 месяцев назад
I think it's also a response to the Blue Sona that also has a built in preamp inside. As for the logo on the side it's darker compared to the MV7 where it's white and stands out more.

The original SM7B requires you to almost have it IN YOUR MOUTH for it to pick up anything. With the dB, I can visibly see you being at normal microphone distance, and it still works.
@skorpers
@skorpers 8 месяцев назад
Did you ever take the windscreen off an SM7B? You don't need an inline preamp in order to figure out the issue between the low sensitivity and physical characteristics.
@ThatBaritoneGuitarGuy
@ThatBaritoneGuitarGuy 8 месяцев назад
I don't own one, but every RU-vid video and podcast I ever have seen use SM7B all have it practically in the guy's mouth. Meanwhile, even a gamer microphone can be sitting on the desk, and be equally as audible.
@skorpers
@skorpers 8 месяцев назад
@@ThatBaritoneGuitarGuy Sorry but that's just a complete fabrication perpetrated by techtubers who know bugger all about audio. Desk mics produce terrible quality audio. They just crank the gain super high, which makes every bump of the desk, every key press of the keyboard all that much more audible. The actual recorded voice is a lot worse and fights for the mics attention with the room and object reflections surrounding the area. It's not expected to use your mic more than 6" away unless you're doing an advertisement where you will be shouting. About 2" to 3" is typical even for condenser mics. The capsule in the SM7B happens to be recessed much further into the body which makes it seem like it's a lot closer than what it is. This extra gain from preamps is just flat out BS. Every decent interface has enough gain. Using max gain on preamp is optimal as it produces the highest signal level in comparison to the gain. Adding an inline preamp with its own noise and then not being able to utilize your preamps optimal noise floor is dubious at best and harmful in reality. Adding more gain onto a mic that's already being used incorrectly just makes the recording worse. If you buy a mic like the SM7B and expect to use it more than a couple inches away it was a mistake.

So, everyone with their nose touching the SM7B does not know how to use it?

You are so right! OH you can bet that the so called expert reviewers will be doing EXACTLY just that within about a week or less from now. SO many of the YT Mic "experts" are just dudes trying to gain subscribers so ANYTHING they feel that they can do to be obtuse or different from the consensus...factual or not....they will do it!

Hey fluff, so if I have a line 6 hd500x and I'm using it as a interface instead of a focusrite will this still work for me? So I'm wondering if I got one of these mics can I use the pre amp option with line 6 or do I need phantom power? As the line 6 doesn't have phantom power😢, or if anyone else knows this info thanks😊

3:05 , that’s not true. You may not get noise from the preamp itself.. but it does make the mics self noise even more noticeable, the self noise is 22db, any booster you use or preamp does infact increase that hiss from the mic.

Not going to lie i just Got the Sm7b earlier this year to recorded my vox Ie Death/thrash so harsher vox. But also great for the podcast. so I was like I cant be spend more. Then with your breakdown on the comparison let my worries go away. Shure always an awesome brand.

Awesome idea. But gotta say not a big fan of the Shure branding on the side. But I understand it. At least it’s not as obvious as the mv7. I also appreciate the switches in this new one too.

I'll be honest with you every complaint. I see on the SM7 dB is due to the fact that you've already purchased The original so you stick with that. As for me buying a new Mic, I prefer the new one. That you don't have to buy extra equipment for, sounds great and works right out of the box. Oh, that's right. You're concerned about how it looks. That's right, you're concerned how your Mic looks. Well, you stick with that!

SM7B's need to be pushed so hard without sending it thru a pre. This should have been a product eons ago. Glad its out there!
@skorpers
@skorpers 8 месяцев назад
What do you mean "pushed so hard" lmfao. You do realize that the microphones XLR jack is sending data to the the preamp and that is what amplifies the sound right? That's why sensitivity is measured as "output level" Also an interface with maxed out gain will have a better signal to noise ratio than this thing plugged into a preamp only cranked part of the way.
@endconnr
@endconnr 8 месяцев назад
@@skorpers you are correct it was worded weird. What I mean is without any external pre's you need to use the internal ones on your board or interface and crank them usually. signal to noise ratio is only an issue if a clean signal isn't worth forgoing for the sake of adding flavour to the signal to you. ruminating on noise is far less an issue than creative freedom in my work flow - I seldom will worry about noise if it means my signal has the character I want.

A lot of your intro is wrong. Michael Jackson used the SM7, I imagine Anthony Keidis too. The SM7B is the 3rd version and is not 50 years old. The SM7A was in between. They have different frequency responses so are not the same.
