How to diagnose and repair your cricut easypress when it displays the E3 error.
** UPDATE ** - sadly this unit succumbed to the same fault not long after. I don't believe the triac is to blame I think either the firmware has a bug or there's a hardware issue which causes it to not sense the temperature randomly and so keep the power on indefinitely and blow the thermal fuse or maybe the processor is locking up while in a heat on state (this would show as the buttons being unresponsive or no other feedback from unit once the fuse has blown). I was unable to get it back to try do a full analysis to figure it out. Your results may vary.

Great breakdown! This disassembly greatly helped for my wife's 10x12 Easy Press. There are the same style clips the full perimeter of the handle area on that size, not just in the handle. Same part number on the triac as yours. Mine also measured about 40ohms, so I'll be ordering that up with thermal fuses. She had described runaway heat before it quit with various E-code errors. Thanks for the help!

@@jpw2112 well, TBH it's still sitting on the workbench. Parts came in after she bought a new press (had an urgent order) and other projects have taken priority. Haha I'm sure you know how that goes. I'll get down the list eventually.

hi can i ask? mine always turns orange and won't turn to green and also when i set the temp 300 F and timer 30 sec it goes back to 85 F and it won't heat up. i wonder whats wrong

I noticed when you were testing the temp, once it got to 200 the screen lightly started to flicker when it wasn't before. I know you said in the update the error happened not long after, I wonder if it would've had more life left if you were to just use it on a lower heat - at least under 200 anyway. Just thought that was a bit interesting, i didn't notice the light flicker the first time I watched the video lol

What a keen eye you have! It is subtle and I'd guarantee it's nothing but a difference between the camera shutter speed and the speed at which the display is updated, or maybe the backlight is PWM driven to a certain brightness so appears to flicker. If I look close enough I think there's a flicker all the time. Won't be affecting the operation of it. Kinda wish I still had it to revisit and see if can't solve it.

hi,great channel Jonny. you need to keep a look out for their mug press version...my other half has had 3 of them in 2 months all failing the same way that the t-shirt press did youve just repaired with the same error message. Cricut just kept replacing the units without wanting them back which was good but not so good as they failed pretty quickly lol. like zx8401ztv said below, the markings on the components might not truly tell what ratings theyre designed for or can comfortably work with? i didnt try and strip them unfortunately but when the new ones decide to let go i might have a gander. keep up the good work,love the indepth detail you go into.

Thanks mate! Must be a bad batch of thermal fuses I think or a product buyer skimping on quality, perhaps they're making them so cheaply it isn't worth a service tech to repair them under warranty.

@@JonnyFix judging by the challenge you had trying to get into youres i bet they wouldnt want to repair them lol,a real design f**k up. probably right about the quality of components,like everything these days theyre built to a budget unfortunately.

Smashing repair :-D I've never seen such a device, maybe a clothes iron on mid would be a stand in. Perhaps the scr got well cooked because of the poor heatsink ventilation. How can the heatsink work well with minimal convection, maybe it cant!. I never believe in the ratings of transistors/mosfets/triacks... You must be able to put your hand on the powered down heatsink without the skin evaporating lol. Ouch ouch hot hot :) Even your cat agreed at the end, or did it just wants food and fuss :-D Yep food and fuss :-D

It is a thermal transfer paste.

Been watching you videos since high school till I fell in some trouble my self would really appreciate it If u can help me on this one Good day my Pyleblade amplifier is in protect mode, it's disconnected from everything also I tested all the transistors an they seems to be good with multimeter but I do see that a sm capacitors burned and also a bulge on one cubodial capacitor but it tested good with the multimeter don't know I'd I should take it out and the ic runnin 2 channels looks good but they are small sm capacity that are givin a 0 reqdin in the resistance mode when i test them below are some pics any help please the choke looks burnt but it's not the problem and it isn't burnt out it tested good with the mm and it's not shorting as the coating didn't burnt out just get heated and when I put the probes on continuity qt the output speakers leads no is attached I get a short at 3 leads don't know if I can email u pics

I found your pictures in another post you made. You can find a datasheet for the output IC TDA8954 on google which shows what each pin does. I would almost guarantee IC U12 is blown. You can't test a choke with mm like that. The enamel coating is burnt so the windings will be shorted, you can only test with a proper inductance meter but in that condition almost certain that is bad. Clean the damage from C137 and remove the charred one above it and C138 and if you still have short on speaker terminals remove the IC and it will probably go away. Only guessing tho but it will need a few parts to repair this damage. You might be able to remove the bad parts and still use it as 2 ch only.

Thank you for your reply appreciate it I I our the burnt chicken coil qn capacitor an other surface mount capacitors and the short came off now the amp is up runnin and playin great only 2 channels wokrin but that's best not wiring all that speakers any ways.
