I bought this CD having no idea who they were, was just browsing looking for stuff that looked cool. It didn’t leave my CD player for months, and then I preordered Battle Hymns and that blew my mind too.
Derek Grant is such a beast. His drumming on this entire record is insane. I saw Derek play a couple of weeks ago with the Vandals and he's still got the gift. He's also got a channel on YT where he posts lots of cool drum cams and exclusive footage. There's a Matt Freeman connection in this song. At 8:54 of this video, you can hear the Suicide Machines give a nod to Operation Ivy by doing the same "Insane" line from the song "Here We Go Again".
Derek is a an absolute animal. his groove ability for punk/ska music is nuts. I love trying to drum to this song. His fills and tempo/groove/beat switches are sick as hell. This song is hard 😂 but so goddamn fun
@@LowEndUniversitysuicide machines have a crazy discography they had a hardcore album after this, then they slowly went more melodic rock, with some influence of their older stuff. And I've seen them live 2x. And they're coming through Dallas this summer after YEARS. See them live if you can! Absolutely amazing. Thanks for doing these videos. It's nostalgic but also love the appreciation these musicians are getting years later.
@@Emadifications This album was mixed by the late Jerry Finn (RIP) who mixed everyone from Nancy Sinatra to Schleprock and Morrissey. He was 27 when he mixed this.
"Horns!!! I didn't expect that!"... there is a trombone growling in that minor intro 😂 The trombone on the recording is Vinny nobile. Absolute monster of a player
Growing up outside Detroit, we used to go to "Jack Kevorkian and the Suicide Machines" shows all the time back in the 90's at St.Andrews. Those were some fun times for sure.
Destruction by Definition is easily a 10/10, front to back, no skip record! If you haven't yet, take the half hour, or whatever, and listen to it clear through. I promise you won't be disappointed! You're welcome😉
My shitty high school punk band opened for these guys in 97, they were the only established band that didn’t treat us like garbage. I will always love them even aside from the awesome music.
Such a fun band. Watching you review these bands is such a treat. It's like rediscovering them and experiencing them for the first time all over again.
This channel is absolutely punching me in the nostalgia. As a 43 year old this channel is basically reliving my teenage years spending night after night at First Avenue in Minneapolis watching The Suicide Machines, PennyWise, NOFX, Dinosaur Jr, Propaghandi, LagWagon, Goldfinger and so many more... I even completely blew my ACL out watching Primus there one night and had to be carried out. Fantastic picks. Might I suggest Skankin Pickle or Voodoo Glow Skulls since you seem to love fast punk/ska as future potential listens.
Love Suicide Machines. Fun fact: Seeing as how they are from Detroit, the singer Jason Navarro also fronted the brutal Detroit Hardcore band, Cold As Life for a short time when the band reunited after their original singer was shot to death in his sleep. Also, check out Jason Navarro’s other band, Hellmouth. Brutal Hardcore with a splash of Death Metal. You won’t be able to believe it’s the same singer. The album after this, 1998’s Battle Hymns is my favorite Suicide Machines album. It’s a lot heavier and mixes ska with very fast and heavy Hardcore. Thanks again for the great reaction video. Please keep them coming.
Operation Ivy - Energy, Suicide Machines - D by D, and Rancid - Out Come the Wolves is the holy trinity of Punk/Ska albums. Youre hitting all the right ones! Streetlight Manisfesto - Keasbey Nights Slaptick - self titled Are honorable mentions. LOVE this channel!
I was literally just thinking to myself the other day how you need to hear the Suicide Machines. So glad you've discovered them. This is hands-down one the absolute best albums from the90s.
Jerry Finn (RIP) mixed this. One of the greats. And someone who, like John Feldmann of Goldfinger, had his hand in a range of music you wouldn't have expected.
Derek Grant, longtime drummer for Alkaline Trio and was featured in your “Mr. Chainsaw” reaction video, is the man behind the kit on this album. Even more mind blowing, dude was only like 18 when he recorded this. Genuinely one of the best drummers of our generation.
Yessss!! One of the most important ska punk albums ever (aside from Op Ivy’s Energy). So stoked you got to hear Derek in this setting. Definitely recommend doing a full album review on this one. It’s a certified banger and will keep you smiling from start to finish
You've done it again! I smiled the whole time watching you smile the whole time. I wore this CD out in my first car, knew every word to every song. 16 years old, nowhere to go, just driving around aimlessly rocking out. What a time!
I love the nostalgia overload. Seeing these little known old songs from my youth being disected and enjoyed all these years later is such a warm feeling.
I don't know if that bass player, Royce, still has his studio in Detroit, but in the early 2000's a band I was in recorded at his place. I remember one of our idiot guitar players checking his guitar with the opening riff of Hey. Royce just sat there and waited. When the guy nervously laughed I remember Royce just saying "no, keep going play the whole song" of course the guy had no clue how to play the rest, but Royce was a very funny guy that could keep a straight face through anything he said. Good times and a great song/album.
I always really liked Royce. I interviewed him back in 2002 maybe when he was doing Blueprint 76 for my website. He has a small law firm in St. Clair Shores these days. My buddy plays in an Oi band and crosses paths with a lot of guys in that scene (Jay Navarro sang on a track on his album a while back). Royce was moving out of the area and my BIL got his old couch. It was referred to as his punk rock couch for a number of years. I think it might be his basement couch now.
@@leftofpunk that's funny about the couch. I know he was doing blueprint 76 when we recorded at his place. We had to cut one day short to go see them play some indie coffee shop.
@@leftofpunkThat couch is long gone. I always enjoyed running into Royce when he was playing or bartending around Detroit. Haven't seen him in years, probably due to his practice.
AVAIL and the Suicide Machines at Emo's in Austin, TX, is one of the best shows I have ever been to! I'm glad I got to see the Suicide Machines several times with the original lineup.
@SecretAgentBeans I was at that Descendents show, too! I also saw Rancid, Face to Face, Less Than Jake, the Impossibles, and a few other shows there also. Fun times!
Yes! One of my favorite bands of all time, and this album has one of the best rhythm sections punk has ever seen. You MUST listen to the whole album and pay attention to all the great bass and drum parts. Plus, Jay is easily in my top 5 for punk vocalists. So versatile
Beyond excited to have seen the thumbnail for this video!! Honestly you could've chosen any song from it. It's a shame that the world doesn't know Royce Nunley's bass playing like it should.
I’m surprised you reacted to the horns so late because they come in at 11 seconds in to the song. Was lucky enough to see them tour this album back in the day. Saw them in a skate shop with with 40 people there and then again opening for The Descendants in a bigger venue with like 250 people.
Yesterday I was watching one of your videos, I think it was Goldfinger. I was thinking "hey, he should react to The Suicide Machines one day". I wish it was Break The Glass, but this is gold too!
If you want Goldfinger and good horns I suggest "Get What I Need" from their album the Knife. Mike Herrera from MxPx had taken over Bass for that album (and all following albums).
it's always so cool to see people who aren't super familiar with the punk bands, slowly get introduced to them. love seeing your reaction hearing them for the first time. i miss that feeling! love that channel dude!
I just love watching you react to hearing these songs for the first time... Makes me wish I could hear them for the first time and experience the discovery and the pure joy they bring all over again!
For a fun tie to most of these reviews you've done, Destruction by definition was mixed by Jerry Finn. He also did mixing and production on albums for AFI, Alkaline trio, Jawbreaker, Rancid and on and on... Basically most of what you've reviewed, he had his hands on.
I'm so glad I found your channel. I hit walls on some songs and cant figure them out fully and you nail it all the time right on camera and it personally helps me out a ton.
My band played with them like in 2004. Watched them a couple of times here in Puerto Rico. What a great group of guys. Jason was always very friendly and we chatted quite a lot during those days. I’ve lost contact with them through time but I hope everyone is doing well.
Suicide Machines rules. I saw them in 2019 with Goldfinger and Big D And The Kids Table. They put on a HELL of a show. They said that they were the punk rock portion of the evening.
This record and their second album Battle Hymns are both crazy and so good. Battle Hymns adds that hardcore crossover you mentioned you like a lot more. Check it out!
When I got the update on my phone that you were doing this song I couldn't wait to see your break down and your reaction. These guys are AMAZING live, I have seen them play alongside Buck O Nine and Bigwig. Your smiling made me smile and THIS is the exact reason I love seeing people check out new music! Another great video my man, keep up the amazing work !!
I am so blessed of knowing all those great bands when I was a kid in the 90's and I remember skateboarding everyday listening to Suicide machines, Lagwagon, satanic surfers, Nofx, bad religion, and so on....
Mark, this journey is absolutely nuts. You're basically going through every song or at least band I ever listened to growing up as both a person and a bassist. But "Hey" is really a very special one. My naive self of 15 years of age just got hold of his first ever bass guitar and what better song to pick but "Hey" to try and figure out the bass line by ear. I learned two things that day: 1) I had no idea what I got myself into, especially with this particular song. 2) The 3 must be a very important note to the 1 (figured out the difference between major and minor a couple of weeks later 😅). I still have trouble playing the first fast part after the "metal" intro cleanly because it's just so fast. And that first day lies 26 years in the past! I can't recommend enough checking out other albums by the Suicide Machines. They are such a versatile band whilst still being true to their own style. Their repertoire reaches anywhere from pop punk over ska to hardcore and back. Such an iconic band! 😊
I remember being a kid in North Bay, Ontario...I was at the mall, in Zellers, and they had this kiosk that had like 10 cd's in it as a sampler demo thing, you could get a sample of like 10 seconds of a song from each band, and this song was on there... I remember having my mind blown, and just thinking...wow.....wow...this is so bloody rad
I've seen this band live more times than probably any other band. DETROIT! I've been traveling the world for a while now living as a nomad in South America and recently my brother saw Jay Navarro play with a different band at a brewery. He went and talked to him after the show and mentioned to him that he was such an inspiration to me and that I was an inspiration to him. My brother letting one of my idols know that he had such a positive role in people's lives makes me so proud. Long live this fucking band.
This album and the Voodoo Glow Skulls Firme were on heavy rotation in my walkman back in 96 and 97. Saw the Suicide Machines at the Palace in Hollywood touring this album.
My first punk show was them and Less Than Jake in 2000. I was hooked ever since. Say what you will about the best punk albums, this is in easily in my top 5. I might have to join your patreon if you do the whole album lol. Also, the opening quote, with that intro riff, that’s why they’re always labeled as “skacore” over just ska.
took me right back to high school :D I saw them more than once back then, and my memory may be fuzzy, but I recall Derek singing on some of the songs even, good times :)
Derek has his own youtube channel where he posts just drum playthroughs as well as demos etc from various projects he's worked on. It's pretty cool stuff and he will reply to comments even about technical questions.
OH man taking me back my Jr year of HS, 97-sittin in my Plymouth Reliant w/ this on cassette, I would put that opening riff on and BLAST it as a middle finger to all those poseur jocks walkin' around thinking they were cool in their Reel Big Fish shirts!
Destruction by Definition is such an amazing album. S.O.S. and No Face have some really fun bass lines. It's songs like these that make me a little sad that all my musician friends are Metalheads.
I was fortunate to see Suicide Machines at 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis back in the mid/late 90s. Blue Meanies was one of the opening bands (and I think Marble from Mankato, MN). Around that same time I got to see Rudiments at The Java Joint in St Cloud, MN. Highly recommend Blue Meanies and Rudiments!
I got so excited when I saw that you reviewed this! Seen them 6 or 7 times, but I remember hearing this song when it came out in ‘96 and I told my best friend ‘it’s like 5 songs in 1!’ Second album has more short hard songs. Third album is a little poppy but good. Albums after that were mostly punk. Love them and they still do live shows here and there. Great band! Thanx!
"Relying on his fingers and the Foto Flame Jazz's snarling rear pickup for his raw tone, Nunley infuses cheery major scales with pure punk 'tude on several Destruction tracks ... The 20 year-old Motor City native plies his band's debut release with confident, warp-speed grooves and jaw-dropping fills that bespeak a listening diet of equal parts Specials and Minor Threat." ~ Bass Player, Jan 1997 🤜
this was THE ONE for me growing up playing bass in bands in NJ in the late 90s. this was my audition for a band and I was so nervous, they all laughed and told me to slow down 🤣
This was the first band I discovered by myself after years of listening to the Punk bands my friends got me into. The hardcore intro was one of the elements that drew me in, as I was starting my journey towards Metal around the same time. I remember listening to the song "Break The Glass" with a friend when we got into a wreck. They hold a very dear place for me in my music journey. It's unfortunate this was their best album, as they kinda went downhill after this. Their third album sounds like a completely different band. But, on their second is one of my favorite covers, "I Never Promised You A Rose Garden". Anyway, glad you loved this track. I knew I had to check it out as soon as I could when I saw it pop up.
im so glad you did the Suicide Machines, i saw them in 2006 as a bright young junior in high school and they played faster than their album live. It was nuts.
A friend in high school back in the 90s who was into harder music got a copy of Destruction by Definition and didn’t care for it, so he gave it to me. I played the heck out of it. Always loved the sound of the trombone across the album, esp in The Vans Song. Looked for a similar sound on other SM albums and from other bands but, sadly, never found it.
