Yes, we have one. A fair review. We've done some trips where we've reached the expected 230km or 140 miles _rate_ of range ... but would not want to risk going that full distance because then we're just one diversion or missed turning way from running out of charge. But we have a petrol car for the longer trips. It is a lot of fun to drive.

I have been driving an EV in a city with almost no electric charging network Ince 2015, never had a problem with range, I charge it at home very night, car is used for city driving and I do a lot, never had a problem, never had range anxiety, I don't see the point of having a massive battery unless you do long distances. I will never go back to to the older technology.

I have a Tesla MY with 300+ miles of range for trips and utility use but I have a Mini SE on order for around town fun. Once you go EV you never want to drive anything else. The key is to have level 2 (220 / 240V) charging at home. Plug it in each night and look forward to drive in the AM.

I think you will love this car. It's totally different driving experience compared to a Tesla. In the city the Mini will outrun most other EVs and literally every ICE.

These are all short-term owning cars. You can take a gas powered car and keep it for 15-30 years if you felt like it. You'll never do that with your Tesla or this MINI. You'll make car payments until the day you die. You'll be a SLAVE TO DEBT owning these cars. You can replace an engine in a used car out of warranty for just a few grand. You can't do that with the electric car. Batteries on a BMW i3 are like $10,000. Batteries for a smart electric are $27,000. All electric cars are PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE to the MAX. I'd rather have a vehicle I can pay off and enjoy without car payments for 10+ years. NEVER with an electric. The batteries are cost prohibitive to replace. Very sad.
@js-hl5hv
@js-hl5hv 3 года назад
With the CatL batteries in the mini, you can replace individual cells rather than needing to replace the whole battery. In 8 years time (battery warantee) you will probably be able to replace the batteries for less than an engine rebuild/replacement, and get twice the range to boot.
@CarMaintenanceGuy
@CarMaintenanceGuy 3 года назад
@@js-hl5hv Yeah, that's what they said 8 years ago about the electric cars we have now. DON'T BELIEVE IT. And good luck changing the individual batteries yourself.
@js-hl5hv
@js-hl5hv 3 года назад
@@CarMaintenanceGuy I do believe it. In 2010, the average battery cost per kWh was about $1100US, in 2019 it was $156. In 8 years??? Also, if you read up on CatL batteries, one of their features is the ability to replace a single cell. How many people change their engine themselves. A fair number I guess, but as a percentage - approximately zero. I would personally get them changed as part of a service. One example is old Leafs having their batteries replaced with new tech. Double the range for a few thousand dollars - the old batteries are still good for static storage and are traded in.

Very nice review - the first one on the mini I've seen from Australia. I'm an Australian living in the UK - I bought the electric Mini a few months ago, and really have been "living with it" albeit with the restrictions we are having recently. I agree with you on a lot of points. One of the big things for me was how much it looks and feels like a normal car, but with all the advantages of electric. The EV fanboys out there might hate that - but I love it! Its called the "Mini Electric" over here, its only called the SE in foreign markets, so you can call it the Mini-E if you wanted :) Typically I'll drive the car around 80 miles before charging, which will usually be a bit below 50% battery. So the WLTE range is about right (144 miles). I dont have any range anxiety at all, since I charge at home. This car has been 10 years in the making, and it shows. If it had come out years ago, it wouldnt be the car it is today. I'm sure one day it will have a longer range, but that will take better battery technology than we have now - I'm glad it came out now, rather than wait. Longer range would never be an "optional extra" to tick on the order form as you've suggested, because the car has been built to an exact weight/performance ratio. Its not like you are just asking for a bigger petrol tank. There's a bit more involved!! Tesla allows you to "choose" by cheating - their short range car has exactly the same battery in it as their long range, but its limited in software - which is downright deceitful IMHO. Otherwise, good review.

Hi Ash, your video has great production value and audio quality. Your presentation skill is also top shelf. I am a new owner of a similar car to this Mini SE, the BMW i3s 33KWH version. Both cars have similar range due to identical drive unit and very similar batteries. The real world range of this car in the city is around 250 kms. The average speed driving in the city is around 45 km/h. This means the owner have 5 hours per day driving range in a city environment before needing recharge. Almost every EV driver I know in real world always try to charge their car for free while doing something else. This also applies to owners of Kona EV and Model 3 LR. They all have longer range but they all want to charge for free whenever they can. The user pattern of EV owner is fundamentally different to ICE owner. I would suggest that you ask BMW to lend you a i3s 33kwh version for a month and try it for yourself. Last but not least: When I bought my i3s 8 months ago, I had the choice between 33 kwh or 42 kwh version. That's basically what you were asking for as option at end of your video. As real world user, I choose the smaller battery exactly because the range is more than enough for day to day usage even with this smaller battery. Btw, I have done almost 30k kms in the first 8 months ownership. I drive frequently 500 kms a day in the i3s. I prefer this little city shuttle over large Teslas any day in the CBD.

The battery has been built to a weight, not just a price. Extra range would add extra weight, which would affect performance and they would have to find space which would encroach on passenger / boot space. It is really as quick as the petrol Cooper S, there is a test on RU-vid showing a track test of petrol vs electric Cooper S, the electric wins.

80-90 if you drive it like you stole it! Matt Shumaker (tech forum) has had one for about 3 months and says it is an easy 125 miles (200k), and you can get 140 miles if you drive carefully, although who would drive a mini carefully... He also tested the 0-60 (mph) and it was about 0.6 seconds quicker than advertised (6.3 vs 6.9). The inside EV guys got 130 miles on the freeway at 90kph. Another video shows 288km - although this was in the city. Definitely not 80-90 miles :) I would love the tax break here in Oz, but alas......

@@Mr_Magoo_ Actually, the real world *usable* range is 125-140 (200-225 km), the ideal range (20-80%) between charges is more like 90 miles (138km). I charged at 50% after doing 137km the other day. They were (unfortunately) very sedate km, but makes a mockery of a full range of 80 - 90 (128 - 138km). As an aside, research on modern battery tech with active heating/cooling shows little to no effect based on charging habits.

What doesn't add up? It's stylish, has gadgets, probably the most fun EV car to drive on the market and one of the cheapest EV's on the market. This car is aimed at current MINI drivers so the range would suit the average MINI driver fine as their average mileage is 6000 miles per year

as prior Mini, now 2018 JCW, 2019 BMW and next year additionally SE owner: erm....no. The only EV that doesnt look butt ugly like "real EV's", top notch drivetrain, suspension, roadholding, weight balance, torsional stiffness etc. It's (not matter if EV or petrol) the kind of car, you are actually looking forward to drive, or just drive for the sake of having fun to drive it. In the category of MX5, but at a fraction of the cost of similar fun cars (the higher powered BMW's, Audi's, or pure sportscars). And as opposed to all else in fact quite affordable in comparison, and for what you get - and without the anti-driving non-fascination, interior and charme of public transport like the others. For the actual, real world usability and haptics of the touch, display and button combo & BMW iDrive....as good as it can get. "Newer" is not automatically "better"... The premium brand cars i test drove before deciding for my 2 new ones, not to speak of the budget cars i tried - are ok to awefull in comparison. And yes, i also drove the Renault Zoe, the uber popular and oh-so-good-on paper-car. Yes, it goes from A to B, and yes, would be "ok" if i had limited budget and only 1 car. But in comparison, it's outright dreadfull to drive, ugly in and outside, and - for my standards - and the same punishment to drive like beeing forced to use public transport. And yes, my wife (who gets the SE) would be uber pissed on me, if i had ordered a Zoe or similar...she likes great cars too. And i heard the BMW plans, of doing it "all new", 5 door etc. So yes, i fear the worst. Because 3 door with frameless windows - is classic, stylish, and simply awesome. "5 door" - is a threat in itself... If they do something, that looks good on paper, and appeals to a majority of people - it will be a dissapointing, bland/ugly, non-fun-to-drive car (like them >95% all are). With BMW (and a few others) the only ones left of doing really good cars/"driver cars" - i sincerely hope that does not happen. Just like the MX5, which is perfect as is, and only needs a little uplift here&there every 10-15 years.

What amazed me the most about his presentation is that he actually said "You can charge a full battery for a couple of quid". So i guess, if charging around the corner is becoming mainstream, you have like 200 km range for only 10 euros electric bill? That ain't bad. Considered you drive 50 km a day on average, 400 km a week this will only set you back about 20 euros a week if you keep driving green. an overall monthly electric bill beneath 100 euros is a sell. Considering your employer grants you some incentives a km and that brings this whole concept down to almost driving without any electric cost. Very Nice !!!

It appears mini/bmw were sandbagging a bit when it came to 0-100 (0-60) times. They quote 7.3 (6.9), whereas there have been multiple tests which give 6.6 (6.3). This puts it squarely in cooper S territory. The top speed is limited, but still way faster than any legal limit here. Not entirely. The mini is based on the petrol car, meaning the assembly line can produce all variants. This makes it a lot cheaper than having to create/retool a new assembly line. They've made a good car here, but it's a pity they've used 4 year old technology to do it. The BMW i3 (60Ah) had this drivetrain back in 2016, which is a long time ago in EV years. The result is a bit of a parts bin vehicle, but I'm sure it will be perfect for the traditional place of a Mini as a second car.

The usability of such short range EV is depending on access to FREE AC chargers around you. If you live within 50 kms from a major city, you should have plenty of slow AC chargers around you. Actually, the MINI Cooper SE's battery was not built to a price, it was built to a space. It occupies all of the space where the exhaust system and the fuel tank used to be. To increase the range, MINI would have to use a bigger battery, adding weight and impinging on occupant/cargo space (bad) or use a less-powerful motor that would reduce the quickness (worse). The MINI Cooper SE uses CATL battery cells, which are an upgrade from the Samsung cells used in the BMW i3. MINI claims they are less prone to cold-weather range-reduction. Finally, reviewers who have tested the MINI Cooper SE's acceleration beat BMW's conservative times handily (eg. 0-60 mph in 6.3 seconds).

Range anxiety 101: think about the patrol car you have today. How big is the petrol tank? How far can you drive on a full tank? And how often do you have to fill it up? If you have a charger at home or at work, the range is a non issue for daily driving. Road trips on the other hand... I thought this would be my second car due to those issues but in reality it is my first car as the other car has become a weekend toy, why put on boring commuter miles on my sports car. Only issue I have is with the stiff suspension but everything else has been surprisingly excellent.

@hansh2463
@hansh2463 4 года назад
200km is not that far, you will keep 10 - 20% before 'filling' it up (so 40 km range) and you will only load until 80 or 90%. so basically you are looking at a range of 140 km without getting out of your comfort zone. But if that is enough, it should not worry you.
@johnlee5307
@johnlee5307 4 года назад
Hans H My mindset for BEV is different from ICE as I have charging at either end of my commute, I just need to get there with 5 miles to spare although you can go all the way to near zero if you are sure there are no unexpected delays. That’s less than 4% residual charge so you can constantly use 96% of range which you can also extend by using the most efficient driving mode.

A couple of points... #1: The i3 has the battery in the floor as well. #2: By 2020 standards and for the price, this MINI lacks quite a few features which one would expect, such as adaptive cruise control, lane assist, etc. #3: I guess it is a matter of personal taste whether you like your electric and petrol cars to look the same, however, this approach does bring several technical downsides. You cannot fully take advantage of the advantages the electric drive train brings because you are constrained by the combustion engine architecture... I drive the i3 and have been at the launch of this MINI in Glasgow. After seeing it, am even more certain that if I had to buy again, would go for the i3 instead of the Cooper SE. It has much more interior space, lower weight, rear-wheel-drive, etc. It's a shame MINI can't innovate their design. And don't shout it's not possible. Porsche has managed to keep the same design language but freshen up the exterior and especially the interiors without losing any of the characteristic brand features.

@@1stMilcom When I was at the launch in Glasgow it was a 50:50 split between men and women. I was definitely the youngest person there (at 22). Most people middle-aged or slightly older. And I think this is the bad news for MINI. The marketing shows young hip people driving these cars, but in reality, it is usually people who are stuck in the past who want them. I like the i3 because it's something new, optimised for its function as a city car. And most of my friends think the same. I get so many compliments and questions on the car, it's absolutely crazy. My dad with an M3 doesn't get that much attention. Just go ask what people in their 20s want... No MINI, but a Tesla. (That's a very long answer to why I prefer the i3. 😅)

I can’t wait for the Mini Convertible SE!
@insightman
@insightman 4 года назад
For this car, MINI had to add reinforcements to the door sills and A-pillars to protect the occupants from the extra weight of the battery in a roll-over crash. A convertible would need a full roll-cage to protect the occupants, which sort of defeats the reason for having a convertible. No hints from MINI that an electric convertible is in the cards.

@@arrowlogproductions2509 The 4th gen MINIs have been delayed and when they do appear, they'll probably be made by Great Wall Motors in China. My hope is that the smaller Rocketman MINI concept becomes a reality and comes to the US. However, it's more likely that the next MINI Electrics will be larger to contain longer-range batteries. A 2-ton MINI won't do it for me.

Australian cars are expensive! It's $29,900 in the USA. Best EV in its class by far.
@js-hl5hv
@js-hl5hv 4 года назад
It is $54,800 (before on roads) which is $38,269US. The equivalent model in the US is $37,750 - making the Australia tax only $519. That is pretty amazing. Our "onroads" are a lot more, and consist of things like delivery charge and stamp duty. In the US, the typical delivery charge is around $800. The equivalent Cooper S (petrol) with the same options is only around 4k cheaper. People keep comparing the base cooper S (41k plus onroads) to the top spec SE (54,800 plus onroads). We only get the top spec (level 3 in UK terms) here. Not really a fair comparison. Good video, and great to see the Australian reviews finally!

@@js-hl5hv US price is $29,900, or $22,400 after tax breaks. We have import duties here that add a good 20-30% on top of exchange rate. Lower tier than the Model 3, but the drivetrain feels just as good.

@@AshDaviesonCars The price for the base model is $29,900, however the Iconic trim is $37,750, and that is the model we have here (everything except the 'moon roof'). If you don’t think the range is enough don’t buy the Mini, buy something else. For many, many people the range will be more than enough, like me. The S is there because it is a Cooper S! It’s not funky Orange, it is Energetic Yellow. It’s not a ‘base’ Cooper, the spec is much higher than a base Cooper, you would need to add quite a few extras to get to the same spec.

I too really want to like this non "Ludacris" EV, but 110miles!? In the US, it's not uncommon to commute 60 miles. Getting to work a) on time and b) safely, is a big enough challenge, but NEEDING to find an available charge location that will absolutely charge without failure every time!? 😓

I have a much shorter review. 1. No car should be released in 2022 with under 250 miles of range. Strike 1! 2. At 29k (not 59k as he stated) with 114 miles at max range, range anxiety is real and we shouldn't he making cars anymore that only get you around town twice before dying. Strike 2! The price is competing with Tesla Model 3 standard range with a 263 mile range. Strike 3!
@Ben.Royals
@Ben.Royals 2 года назад
114 miles isnt the max range though
@tompatton2086
@tompatton2086 2 года назад
1. No car this small can deliver a 250 mile range with current battery technology without making it far too heavy. 2. The 59k is in Australian dollars, not American dollars. 3. As I type this, the Tesla Model 3 standard range is $44,990, a full $11,000 more than the base model Mini SE, and that's before the $7500 tax incentive you can get on the Mini, which you can no longer get for a Tesla. But one thing I will agree with you on, there will inevitably be occasional range anxiety for most anyone who buys it.

@@Paul-if1jq no mini says you can charge the battery to 100% every time as the battery has a buffer at either end to allow you to do that, I do have a Mini Electric.
