FINALLY! My Owner's Review Of Our 20,000 Mile 2016 UK IONIQ Electric EV Premium SE

We've driven 13,000 miles (~21,000 km) in our UK Hyundai IONIQ Electric since buying it second-hand 18 months ago in January 2018. Our IONIQ EV had just ~7,000 miles showing when we got it. Now it's at a little over 20,400 miles (~32,800 km). So it seems high time to finally do a long-term owner's review of it!
I want to stress to you this is NOT a technical overview, test drive or features review of our 2016 IONIQ Electric, Premium SE trim model. Instead I go over my impressions and feelings about owning and driving our IONIQ for 18 months. I talk about:
1. how it stacks up as just 'a car' like any other car;
2. what makes it special as an 'electric car'; and
3. whether I'd recommend it to others, basically would I buy one again? Would I buy the upcoming second generation 38kWh IONIQ refresh - due out in September 2019?

I have 2020 model and find it exceptional. However the ioniq seems to get ignored by a lot reviewers. I currently get around 5 miles per kw and I love it. Great build quality.

The first time I test drive the Ioniq back in 2016 I had a very good idea that it’s efficiency would be class leading at that time. Hats off to Hyundai for still holding that record. I would have loved to have bought one but just couldn’t stretch my budget at that time. We opted for a used Leaf in the end.

Most common things that cause radar cruise control and similar systems to turn off are: Weak battery / "unreasonable voltage" somewhere (ICE with 12V lead especially). Wheel sensors / "ABS rings" or the like not working. And the interesting one, radar interference. I've seen a lot of reports in some cars of cruise turning off when a particular model of car was coming the other way. Not the same one as the one driven, but a particular different one that caused some sort of error as presumably its radar hit you. Great video. Lots of information I've been interested about and experiences like this are particularly useful. You can find the data elsewhere.

We bought a 2019 Ionic Electric, in January and love it. I am a car guy and love my muscle cars, but the wife's Ionic is nicer to drive than any car I've driven. Thank you for your awesome videos, they taught me a lot about my new car. Canada's infrastructure is not what Europe is like, right now, so its' nice to see what we might have, one day.

From Canada here I am looking to buy the Ioniq EV because of inflation and thus the high price of gazoline but at the same time the whole western countries are going down rapidly in totalitarians kind of state so it's a real battle Thank you for the many review you've done for all those years Indeed they are still not cheap even in the used market (maybe inflation play a role)

Quite funny that I found your channel now... After we bought a second hand Ioniq 2018. Your video's will help to get better usage of our 'new' car. We bought the Ioniq because the price was good, 19000€ for a 2018 Executive (= full option model in Belgium) so still 3 years warranty on the car and almost 6 years on the battery. The car driven little under 80k km so wear and tear is minimal. For us it will be our car for at least till warranty on the battery is out and possibly longer 😀 I will be viewing your other video's then...

I have to say the Korean cars seem to be the next best thing to owning a Tesla when it comes to EVs. It seems they came the closest to being almost as good as a 7yr old Tesla so very impressive above all other manufacturers. I can't say anything bad about them.

Applying logic to the questions: Do you need a car in Denmark? Yes if you want to take the Family touring the countryside. Will you buy an ICE car? I don't think so, you have tasted the EV, and I feel, you will never go back. So, the first choice is New or 2nd hand? 2nd hand would be more economical if you are buying for a short term, depending on your tenure in Denmark, but depends on what is in the market. 2nd hand is also instant delivery. Range comes into play here as longer range cars are not older cars. Leaf's, Zoe's etc. may not be suitable. So let's say you bottom spec is the Ioniq #1. You were happy with that. New cars, well some are made of unobtanium. It depends on what you can afford in payments and how long you want to wait. Oh you have an adventure in front of you. BTW I love my Kona. It has all the Ioniq traits plus range plus performance. The dashboard is even in the right place, not some oversized tablet PC. hahaha ...

I've been following you right from the beginning and your knowledge of the Ioniq was very helpful when it cam available in Australia. Nissan actually launched the Leaf back in October and still not on sale here yet, I believe not till September. I actually got the first Ioniq electric in Tasmania at the end of February, I am very pleased with it. Australia just had a general election and like Brexit the opinion poles got it wrong, Labor was to win and a major policy was to roll out fast charging stations around the country. The Liberal Conservative were re elected, with a policy of "clean coal" and climate deniers among its ranks. Tasmania has a network of caravan parks and one public fast charger, so to travel more than 200 K, a nights stay in a caravan is the only choice. Went to the EV experience centre in Milton Keynes the other week, did the 20 mins test drive of a BMW i3, thinking of doing a longer test drive or the 5 day hire of the BMW i3. Great video. More informative than any professional road test I've ever seen. I particularly liked the information on the steering as this is important to me. It is surprising how informative a couple of second clip can be, such as when you easily skipped from the passenger side to the drivers seat. A picture is worth a thousand words, eh? I have wondered about the Ioniqs efficiency too, could it be the regenerative braking? I know that it makes much better use of this than some cars (my Zoe misses a trick here I think). From what I can gather it does what you would want an electric car to do and you can control the car with one pedal. Others, even my beloved Zoe, try to pander to people who are scared of this new world instead of excited by it and so fall short of what is possible. I also wonder if they secretly have capacitors in there to harvest more of the available power that the batteries can't take all at once? This argument falls down with the new Leaf though as it has one pedal driving but is no more efficient????

Thanks! Being able to coast really improves efficiency, I think (level 0 regen). Plus the adjustability on the fly was great and good for optimising the efficiency. Good aero is another factor. Plus I think Hyundai has managed to design some of the most efficiency current gen motors available :)

I'm in the middle with Tesla's! I love the cars - think the S is too big for many UK roads but love the 3, if only they could've made it as a hatchback! I just don't like the central control screen but love the fact the OTA updates are so well supported. Looking forward to the rumoured small car from Tesla - although with all the letters in the 'SEXY' moniker now used, I don't know what they'll call it?

I went with the Model 3 SR+ last month. The e-Niro was probably the closest competitor (size, range, quality, and price), and it's a good choice, but the Model 3 offers so much more. Safest car ever tested, hardware for full autonomy, autopilot, improving through over-the-air updates, massive display, more efficient, charging network, faster, better handling. I love the minimal design, but that might be personal preference. The e-Niro is easier to get in and out of though, has a little more range than the SR+, and might have a little less road noise.

I don't know about other countries but in Denmark IT seems you choose between Tesla or all the other brands. If you choose Tesla you get the supercharger network for free - whereas if you buy any of the other brands you have to sign up for a Clever membership scheme - this membership has to be paid on-top of the price for the car and honestly makes the evaluation of price a great bit harder as the membership is not cheap at all. Welcome to Danevang & good luck with finding an EV, that will hopefully tick all the boxes for you and your family.

What a great send off for your Ioniq. I've just found your channel not long ago and subscribed as I'm a newly enshrined Ioniq owner here in Australia as they only became available late last year well more like early this year. I am hoping you go for another Ioniq but obviously you have lots of choice being in Europe. As there are so many Tesla channels already hope you avoid it but can fully understand why. However remember Ionity are expanding throughout Europe as well with their 'Super Chargers' at 350kW. I've managed to finally try out Fast Charging myself at a newly installed 50kW charger(Tritium made) about 70km away from where I live so well within the range of the Ioniq. I'll keep watching your older videos for now as I'm subscribed to your channel. All the best in Denmark. Before I go, you haven't been on Nat Geo channel in a docu-drama called 'Mars' have you, now on Netflix? :)

Hey! I'm from Denmark, nice to have here (: Hope you enjoy your stay (: So I'm currently waiting for the Ioniq to come out. I've tested both the Kona and Ioniq, but just finishing my study this summer, so no car before decent job (; I think both of them are great cars. I will go for the Ioniq, because it is the cheapest and most of the daily trips, will be within the range. Once a year, I drive to Italy and don't have any worries about doing it, in the Ioniq. Now my wife and I have a need for two cars, so the Ioniq will nr. 1 car untill we can afford to get our i20 replaced. So it will only be a small compromise for a few years, and then the electric car market would have gained a lot more (; So! I look forward to get my own EV! Maybe do a trip with you (; Ha' det godt (; Take care (;

Good evening Duncan and greetz from you southern neighbour Country - now - I hope that you sold the Ioniq for a good price. I'm still driving it and your conclusion is absolutely covered with mine. I never owned a car which was so affordable, easy to handle and fast in acceleration like the Ioniq. Every day people are obviously astonished about the surprising 'launch' of the Ioniq when the crossing lights switch to green. Thank you for your videos on the Ioniq BEV. If I had known what I do now about the Ioniq EV and if there had been an available BEV model when I took the plunge on buying the Ioniq PHEV, I might just have bought the BEV. I came from a Prius C (Aqua). I was looking for a more efficient and roomier hybrid, Ihad my mindset on the Accord hybrid, learned about the Honda Clarity, tried for about 3 months to get a test drive. In the meantime my brother bought the Plug in Ioniq. There were wait times of 3 months to get the larger Honda PHEV. That may be normal for Europeans waiting for an electric car. Living in North America waiting for a car is almost non existent. I did however wait a month for the Prius as it had just come to market. That was the case for both the Honda and the Hyundai but there were Ioniq’s available when I finally went to buy an Ioniq I was planning on buying the HEV, saw that they had the PHEV and they had 3 buyers of the BEV waiting for them. With a range of 29mi or 47km EV range it meets most of my daily driving free from gasoline but it still produces carbon when it doesn’t. Your video’s and Brjorn’s and Richard of FC have given me the confidence to buy an Ioniq EV and when the time comes I will have no problem with the range and style of the Ioniq. Thanks for all your effort to put up these videos and I am eager to learn what vehicle if any you decide on. Cheers from Canada!

Re New Ioniq electric - I read it's hamstrung with the 39kWh, 319V pack from Kona. This means the nice fast DC charging has been lost...

Simon Canfer, yes, if they put a 320v pack in the car, charging on the 125A charger it can only send 38 kw at the start of charging, and by time it reaches 40 kw @ 55% SOC it’s going to taper down to 35 kW. If you are paying by the minute, your cost per kWh will be 10-20% higher than on the original Ioniq. This is not going to work. Ioniq needs to at least keep a 50 kW initial charge rate. They can use 108s instead of 88s and get a lot more from the 125A limit on 50 kW chargers, at least until the taper. Let’s put it this way, if the 28 kWh Ioniq can add 100 miles range in 20 minutes, the 39 kWh needs to be able to do the same. After that, it’s all extra that you didn’t have on the 28 kWh model, but now have an option to charge if you need the added range. But if the 39 kWh takes 30 min to add 100 miles, that’s a step in the wrong direction. Too slow and too expensive on per minute chargers.

You´re videos are just great! No other reviewers provide so good information as you do. I´m considering the Ioniq - but I have some concerns, like charging times on longer trips, luggage space. Have you used the Ioniq over longer distances and have it loaded up for a full week holiday? I think i can be done, and I´m less worried about the charging issue, than the space problem, really. Again - keep up the good work - and lykke til i Danmark! Jeg ælsker Danmark!

Thanks, tak! The IONIQ can handle long trips in the U.K. and I’ve had 5 people in it plus luggage. Just check the boot is shallow but long. That won’t suit all luggage types. I can’t personally comment on the Danish rapid charging set up - but others here seem to manage with the high speed IONITY network in particular :)

As an Ioniq driver, partly thanks to you, I'd give a model3 a go if you can live with the boot lid , servicing, insurance, and phantom drain. As you say having access to the supercharger network is huge and also you enjoyed the feel of it

I love this ionic electric! Still have yet to see a single one in the United States yet. I finally was able to drive my first EV last weekend, a 2019 Nissan Leaf SV and I fell in love! Driving a normal car seems so prehistoric (fossil fuel pun intended). And I spotted a lightly used Kia Soul EV for $15k USD at a used dealership!?

Thanks. If you mainly drive ‘locally’ within the range of the car, and you can charge at home, I’d say go for it. If you do lots of long trips, I’d suggest an extended test drive to see how you find the rapid charging...

Thanks. It’s only when you lift the tailgate when it’s raining and/or covered in water. It’s not a leak as such - more a design drawback. I just kept the retractable boot/trunk lid wiped from time to time. Then it was not as noticeable...

CCS is the way forward and the only choice that should be available. How Did you fix the smart cruise system and Lane assist system?

No ccs isnt the only choice that should be avaliable. There are 500,000 leafs out there that use chademo and it came before ccs. Just like people dont need to buy only a model 3. Not everyone in the usa only drives fords since henry ford started it all. Lots of choice there are combo chargers with both .

Of course it will still have the type 2 with it as they both are in one plug After all the cars switch to CCS, all other will be gone.

The error message came on I think twice in the whole time I had the car. I just pulled over safely somewhere - once it was in a motorway services. Then just switched the car off and back on again. The problem cleared. Possibly a software error? It was a very rare thing...

Any new public fast charger is required to have it and since Nissan is the only one still using CHAdeMO, I would advise against buying a LEAF today since more and more new fast chargers will come without it. Nissan would be stupid not to switch to CCS as soon as possible.

Enjoy your foray into Denmark...only holiday'd there but loved it. Your videos inspired us to get the Ioniq and we love it. Was supposed to be our second car, but firmly our 'go to' vehicle for any journey length (120 miles to south coast tonight for instance). Have same feelings about what next..another Ioniq to save us fighting over this one...a bigger Ioniq next year...or do I just wait for the VW ID Buz and go all in with my pension and savings :)

Be forewarned that residual values on these lower range electrics cratered in California once the Tesla Model 3 became available in quantity.

It’s mainly suspension and brake checks, cabin air filter replacement and so on… Not a lot - but cheaper away from the brand dealer, I expect

Fascinating to watch, mainly to me that my 68 reg Ioniq only every displays a range of 138 miles after a full charge on my 7Kw charger, Hyundai tell me this is set to a 80 percent charge , I notice you said that charging to 100 percent gives 150+ range, do you know how I can change the charging from 80 percent to 100 percent please?

Thanks. Sorry I’ve never heard of an 80% charge limit on an IONIQ... My high indicated range numbers are mainly a result of low average speeds. Even on long runs, I’ve struggled to get my average speeds much above 35-40 mph. I suspect I also have a light foot and I coast (Level 0 regen) a lot. I hope this helps?

Zero Tailpipe I guess what I mean is seeing your display show 148 when mine only ever shows 135 max, at 4000 miles yet you have had 170 miles, do you mean you actually achieve 170 miles on a charge doing those kind of speeds? I know from setting the trip I do more miles per charge than the GOM states. Good luck with the Denmark move...

Thanks. Yes, I did and there’s a video about it. Overall it was fine. I don’t think they do very much though... it’s more a check up as there’s little EV-specific stuff to maintain...

is it better to coast or regen lvl 1 to get better distance or miles to a kw (mkw) since if i take it on a level rd the regen will slow the car down with friction over coasting and going farther i had my car door freeze and not open so that is nothing about it being electric.

Coasting is better but you need to be more alert. Level 1 is probably a good efficiency/fatigue compromise :)

I have a leaf 2012 and in the USA we have combo chademo ccs they can’t eliminate chademo because the 2011-2019 leaf use it. They are not good to retro fit all of the old ones to ccs. You guys are jumping the gun. Electric america is supplying chademo for leaf owners. So don’t jump on the ccs bandwagon yet.

Thanks. I’m not suggesting deleting Chademo, I agree it’s crucial to support it going forward. It’s healthy to still have different technical approaches whilst the tech is still maturing, to avoid early lock-in to sub-optimal kit (like the story of QWERTY keyboards). It was just nice that the U.K. went from almost a CCS no-go zone to something approximating parity during the time I had my IONIQ...

Thanks. I bought mine on finance originally. They’ve resisted depreciation. At least here it’s through a dealer, so someone has options for finance etc. With a private sale, not sure how that would’ve worked out... (I agree, and talk about in a previous video, these EVs are NOT broadly affordable yet at all...)

Unless you have solar panels to charge this it still creates emissions at the site of the energy creation, it's alway cheaper and more environmentally efficient to create the energy where the energy is used, like a gas engine

This isn't really true, as an electric engine is way more efficient at using the (stored) energy than a gas engine is. See fueleconomy.gov/feg/atv.shtml, for example. The biggest energy expenditure for EV's is during production, not while driving it. But today, this is absolutely made up for by the improved efficiency while driving and as more and more global energy is being generated by renewables, this difference will only grow larger (in favor of EV's).

I don't think you can talk about long term on a new car that only did 20,000 miles. I would say that 5 years and 100, 000 miles and we could take a more open view of ownership. The range of this car is insufficient for many people. I don't drive much but it will be short drives or long drives. If I have to find a charger and wait every 200km I would go crazy on a longer drive. I've just taken my daughters for a 350km trip after school collect 17h to arrive at a hotel in Germany in Friday evening 21h. If I had to stop and charge which is necessary for this vehicle then we would be checking in at the hotel at midnight. I think hyundai offer reasonable cars but the quality isn't there. I do like your honest reviews compared to many Tesla types that hate anything non Tesla, non EV. So how are you enjoying the cost of buying a car in Denmark 😂

20,000 mile review come on get real, do a 50,000 mile review a 100,000 review, the car is hardly used. and your changing it after 20,000 miles not very environmentally friendly. drive it for decades and change out a part when it wears out instead of buying a car full of new parts to replace a car that had a couple of bad parts.
