ayo i just finished reading the doc, and all i can say is holy crap dude, this is the potential that voltron was missing! the payoffs are satisfying, none of the characters were left in the shadows like in the show (cough cough hunk), and the relationships were really well thought out and have reason. thank you so much for writing this it was so satisfying to read!!

I am so glad that you had them switch their suits to match their lions, it always confused and bothered me that they never did it in the show

I havent found the time to read the entire thing, but this is so interesting! I know this video is SO old, but im only getting into voltron this year and i love your rewrite sm, i havent read/heard the entire thing but i honestly prefer this version already. It's way more character focused it's kinda unrealistic for them to form voltron in one episode. Also allura's reaction to her ENTIRE planet being destroyed was like.. yk what i mean? It was "oh no! Our entire planet has been destroyed and we're the only alteans left! Oh well! Guess we'll just casually ignore all of that and just continue will our lives!" And i love how It's more character driven! Cuz like every character got like one episode to show their emotions with barely any comfort n they were fine fhe next second. Or they got no comfort at all and it was all just ignored?? I also really like the character bonds and stuff like in the series they all felt like forced co-workers to me i wasnt rlly feeling the "found family" thing yk? Like they barely talked about anything emotionally and honestly they made fun jokes once in a while but like NOT YK?? YK WHAT I MEAN ARGJJ anyways im planning on finishing it all later today or in the evening but It's AMAZING from what ive reax 😍😍

Plot twist: people responsible for VLD 2016 did all this... stuff (let's call it like this) with their show - creating an amazing concept that worked for 2 seasons (and got lots of people invested in it) and ruining it for 6 other seasons - so it's easier to find someone to rewrite it and create another reboot so this franchise stays alive and we all were played! . . . . . . . . . . Or they should have thought things out before making 8 damn seasons in a spawn of 3 years but that's just an opinion 🧐🤪

Voltron is and has always been essentially a Super Sentai Five-Man Band wearing the uniforms they would be wearing in a regular Sentai. The lions just happen to not match their pilot's colors. THAT’S WHY THE CONSTANT BITCHING ABOUT THE PIOLET’S COLORS MATCHING THEIR LIONS IS SO STUPID!

69th like (nice) I came here cuz I'm doing a rewrite myself and wanted to make sure my ideas weren't too similar to what other people had already done, but I ended up really loving this. I don't agree with all of the changes, but overall it was really engaging to watch and hear your thoughts. Off to read the Google doc now 😂😂

Hey! I'm watching the video after I read the doc, so keep that in mind. (I also haven't finished reading the doc so... sorry if I'm literally describing something that happens.) So, I'm at the part where Haggar is messing the paladins darker memories, and I was thinking that maybe Hunk decides to try and hide a secret from the group, but they have to get past that in order to break through to escape. Like in the Owl House or Gravity falls, y'know? So then, the group finds out the secret and Hunk runs away and this prompts a monster to come in from Haggar, who's just being annoying and cackling as she does so. (There could be a little comedic scene where Haggar turns to her guards to tell them to release the beast. The guards are sitting in folding deck chairs (with Galra patterns on them, obvi) while they eat popcorn. Haggar yells at them to get up and release the monster "RIGHT NOW OR YOU'LL UNDERSTAND WHY I'M THE ONE IN CHARGE." Her runes glow and things start to fly before they jump up and run to release the mosnter. Once again, this part is completely optional.) The others come to find Hunk and run into the monster. Keith runs ahead of the others to fight the monster, and he begins to see it like he's seen the training dummies; a way to take out his aggression. Pidge runs in just in time to deflect a shot that was heading towards Keith's blind spot. She's about to yell at him before Lance shoots her a look and walks over to help Keith think things out logically. "You're the leader now. If you get killed, we're never going to forgive you. I mean, you're the second Black paladin we've had in months." This is Lance trying to defuse the situation with humor, which flops and dies before Lance clears his throat and looks away from Keith, blushing. "And um... I- we'd miss you, mullet head." They all find out a way to stall the monster, thanks to Keith's leadership and the teams teamwork, and then get to Hunk, who's crying. This could be a vulnerable moment with Lance and Pidge. They manage to get him to help them, and Keith praises Hunk afterward, who came out with guns blazing (haha get it?) during the battle. Hunk and the others decide to talk about the secret later, after they escape. Once again, this is optional, but I thought this would be really cool since Hunk deserves so much UwU (Also, sorry for the literal paragraph, I got into the mode lol) Edit: I literally read the next sentence about there being a battle lol. This is what happens when you stop in the middle of reading.

i read the doc of your rewrite and i personally didn't like any of it but i can respect your passion. i feel like yours ends up cheapening the characters' bonds just like the last 1.5 seasons of the show did. cutting out the lovingly placed clone arc with all of its homages to golion and nixing the reveal is probably the part that i disliked the most. minimizing shiro and keith's bond was... certainly a choice. a terrible one, but a choice nonetheless. giving all of hunk and keith + shiro and keith's moments to lance and keith doesn't make sense and in your rewrite there isn't even enough basis to their dynamic changing other than you stating multiple times that their dynamic is different and everyone notices. there's no actual sense of reward for lance reaching out to keith so consistently. in canon lance is deeply insecure and can't easily break out of the persona he's cultivated around others. he's able to speak so candidly with coran because he doesn't have this construct of lance in his mind. he doesn't /have to/ front for the man like he does with the other paladins. including the monsters and mana episode without shiro does not work. it's a set up for the clone reveal and allurance + team building sans keith. you can have keith there for a monsters and mana campaign but you can't replace shiro. the entire structure for the episode falls apart without him. "For Keith character that he plays as, you can come up with anything you’d like, it’s not that big of a deal" shows a fundamental lack of understanding for the material. kuron (clone shiro) plays as a paladin who later has his twin replace him with the exact same stats because it's a commentary on the old sven (golion) dub/sub characterization and to show the audience that kuron thinks he's shiro but he's playing the part of a paladin in and out of m&m. in the show we later get the reveal that keith knew about shiro's condition and was so terrified at the thought of losing him that he went to insane lengths to protect him but in your rewrite he's confused. shiro didn't raise keith, they were best friends. it's their friendship that allows keith to draw his sword in season 1 and its their relationship that lets black grow wings. skipping the clone arc and then the best mini arc (the black paladins) that the staff put their heart and soul into is actually a joke. allura using altean alchemy to reawaken shiro in your rewrite is anticlimactic and a waste of page space. in your rewrite there isn't really any interpersonal development outside of keith and lance. your hunk and pidge points are always so vague but you constantly have lance and keith engaging in these really charged conversations that don't feel earned. there's a notable lack of garrison trio (hunk, pidge, and lance) interaction in this, allura and lotor already have a complicated, and i'll say it: convoluted past, and shiro and keith who are stated multiple times to be super important to each other and love each other feel like strangers in your rewrite. you don't get any sense that they care about each other outside of some vague sense of obligation and the keith in your draft never would've been there for the inciting incident of the series (he definitely would've left his best friend in the popup hospital in the desert off base). another thing: the shiro, lotor, allura and keith plotline is a mess. if keith knew that it was lotor that had tortured his friend it would've fractured voltron forever. he wouldn't put up with lotor and he would've been the one who didn't trust allura (contrasting to allura's mistrust in canon when she learns he's half-galra). shiro also would've been uncomfortable with allura and lotor's past given his ptsd spiral with sendak where he was experiencing auditory hallucinations of the man taunting him. but i guess since your rewrite focuses mostly on klance it makes sense that you wouldn't actually consider these friendship dynamics and how they'd complicate things. i actually won't even touch on the weapons upgrade comment or you likening keith to zuko because i saw red for several seconds reading that part. changing lance's weapon to a sword doesn't vibe with his character and neither does pidge's. it's actually essential to his character that keith receives his scar from his battle with kuron because it shows us the violence of the galra imperial regime; it's a mirror to shiro's scar from his gladiator days and it's meant to be a visual callback to krolia's facial marking. the kuron vs. keith fight isn't something you can skip without considering these things outside of an aesthetic perspective. even knowing that kuron was a clone controlled by haggar, keith chose to neutralize the threat by slicing off kuron's galra tech arm /after/ telling kuron that he's a brother to him and that keith loves him. there's an exchange in, i believe, season 1, where keith and shiro talk about how the galra took shiro's arm. keith slicing off the weapon arm is the end point of that set up. he's undeniably galra (you briefly see his pupils chage mid-fight). despite how much he loves his friend, he's still the one who ends up enacting the same violence against shiro. looking at the kuron vs. keith fight, it's set up as a gladiator style fight as a callback to shiro's time imprisoned by the galra. even the scenery setup and the countless shiro clones put the viewer in mind of a roman coliseum. "At this party, I want to see a Klance kiss, and I want it to be Keith that kisses Lance because I think that would be great and we were robbed of this" / "It wraps everyone’s stories up well and it makes sure that everyone has a satisfying ending" this rewrite actually didn't wrap up everyone's stories well, it was just klance: the space opera ft. everyone else. adam and shiro were over because he told shiro that he wouldn't be there waiting for him if shiro chose to go on the kerberos mission. shiro wanted to see the world because he has / had a degenerative disease (you never address it in your rewrite so who knows!). having his happy ending being with adam and this big hotshot military leader falls into the same pitfall the show did with him and the atlas. he wanted to explore space, not be a military leader or else he never would've went on the kerberos mission. but hey, nothing other than klance kissing and going on space adventures matters. even when it contradicts lance's desire to be home with his family. LM: But also, there’s just a really big difference in the relationship between Shiro and Adam, and then the relationship between Keith and Shiro. Shiro and Adam have a very adult relationship, that needed to be based on mutual respect. Whereas the relationship between Shiro and Keith, is a relationship that took place during Keith’s most formative years, and Shiro has a huge impact on him. And that’s something that, where Adam might be able to walk away from a relationship, because he doesn’t feel that respect, that relationship is something that Keith would hold on to his whole life, and probably never be able to walk away from.
