Finally! Texas Rep. Officially Ordered FAA To Approve 25 Starship Launches A Year...
The call to launch more Starships is growing louder across the U.S. aerospace industry, and SpaceX has consistently demonstrated its readiness to meet that demand. However, the FAA and other regulatory agencies have introduced hurdles, leading to frustration among government officials. Recently, a Congressman sent a formal letter to the FAA, expressing concerns and urging the agency to make necessary adjustments.
What were the key points raised by the Congressman, and why are these changes crucial for SpaceX and the Starship program?
Let’s explore this further in today’s episode of Great SpaceX.
Finally! Texas Rep. Officially Ordered FAA To Approve 25 Starship Launches A Year...
SpaceX's readiness to launch Starship is evident in nearly every phase of its operations. Recently, the next prototype, Ship 31 (intended for Flight 6), successfully completed a static fire test at the flame trench test system at the Massey test site. After facing electrical system issues during the cryogenic test in May, it has made a remarkable recovery, passing subsequent tests with flying colors. In the near future, it’s expected to return to the Production Site to prepare for its Wet Dress Rehearsal alongside Booster 13.
Speaking of Booster 13, it completed its cryogenic test back in April and is set for two more crucial steps: a static fire test and the Wet Dress Rehearsal. These preparations are expected to be completed swiftly, as SpaceX remains efficient in pushing its hardware through the necessary testing phases.
Finally! Texas Rep. Officially Ordered FAA To Approve 25 Starship Launches A Year...
Alongside Ship 31 and Booster 13, the duo of Ship 30 and Booster 12, prepared for Flight 5, are nearly ready for their Wet Dress Rehearsal, marking another significant step toward future launches. This continuous preparation underscores SpaceX's ability to maintain a high launch cadence, ready to move forward pending regulatory approval.

Agree. Congress should pass a law that reduces FAA's discretionary review of environmental impacts and make it objective based only and imposes tight time limits for reviewing launch licenses. Further, if Congress believes that the FAA is understaffed to process launch licenses, a launch application fee should be imposed, or if already exists, increased to provide the necessary revenue for reviews. Come on, if we really have the will there is a way that addresses concerns without grinding to glacial pace.

158+ days for licensing IS NOT a timely turnaround,... The culture at FAA is not set up to assess, and process at pace, the rapid iteration of technological change happening on the ground with SpaceX and other Private Space Ventures,.... FAA is not the proper venue to oversee the innovative culture that is inherent with Private Space Ventures and needs to be removed from the process if they are unable or unwilling to adapt,.... you can't tell me that these delays are a result of a funding shortfalls when FAA employees are gaming the system by continuing to work from home POST PANDEMIC,... these are political statements from the FAA, with the agency weaponizing licencing to political effect,... for a larger budget,... to slow the pace of SpaceX,.... God knows to what end

There’s a lot of hate directed towards the FAA about this. Now I agree that getting FAA approval is too slow, they’re bureaucratic, but are likely using outdated tech and have historically been so underfunded that they can’t hire enough people to move faster or update their systems and processes to move more quickly. Their mandate is to try to protect the public and they got burned bad in the past when they tried to let companies self certify that their systems were safe to speed up the process, looking at you Boing 737 Max. If a potential violation is reported to them they’re required by law to investigate. I just watched a video of a glider pilot who was called by the FAA because in one video it looked like he might have violated Class A airspace. I want to see SpaceX be able to move more quickly and there are a couple of options. You can take space regulation away from them, but then who is responsible for trying to protect the public? You might trust that SpaceX will act in the publics interest, but Boing’s historic behavior shows that you can’t just trust companies to do the right thing. Another option rather than demonizing them is to fund them at the levels needed to update their systems, streamline their processes, and hire enough of the right people so they can keep up with the rate of change at SpaceX. SpaceX however isn’t blameless here. They know things require FAA approval and chose to launch with processes and procedures that weren’t yet approved. With all of the brilliant minds at SpaceX, you’d think they’d have started the approval process as soon as possible to minimize delays and known to not use the changed process until they had approval. This almost seems like SpaceX intentionally chose to violate regulations just so they can pick a public fight with the FAA.

Do you honestly think we should ALLOW billionaires to ignore the laws and regulations that govern EVERYONE ELSE? This entire problem is because ELON MUSK refuses to do his due diligence and FILE THE PAPERWORK required. Because he refuses to address the issues the FAA has already told him he must remediate. Just because you’re a fanboy is no reason to let the rich get away with not following the law, because I of they allow MUSK to do it, how do you argue that ANYONE has to obey the law?

@@gregtroublemaker1862 Oh, I am. The fact that Musk picked Texas thinking the GOP governor would let him do whatever he wanted, only to find the coastal wetlands are all under FEDERAL aegis, because, as usual, Musk failed to do any due diligence. ( same failure that had him legally FORCED to buy Twitter for the ridiculous sum he offered without knowing he could be legally held to the offer. ) The fact that Elon Musk inadvertently designed a single use launch mount for his reusable rocket, For no other purpose than to evade having to deal with the ACoE. The fact that he is 4 YEARS behind schedule on the 4 billion in taxpayer funds he has been given to develop this rocket, and has yet to prove a single one of its benchmark capabilities. The fact that they built no blast diversion trench, and yet put a 100 foot tall fuel tank farm within the blast radius. The fact that failed to file an environmental impact report until after he started launching. The fact that when he was told what measured had to be taken to remediate his launches environment effects, he simply claimed he did them, but hadn’t. ( he still won’t turn off the klieg lamps all over the facility when the turtles are hatching. ) Congress has allowed far too many of our national security eggs to be in Musk’s basket, given that his entire business was built with Taxpayer funds and is STILL primarily dependent on government contracts, especially in light of his multiple fraud investigations. But hey, he’s just another fraudster stealing billions in government subsidies, and that’s the kind of person republicans WANT to give free rein.

Yes. I agree...BUT! He failed to mention when he will be doing a follow-up on this issue. Coming g from a corporate environment when addressing an issue or a concern, you always follow up on it to assure that it is addressed. When you do set up a follow-up it's within days, not months. 🤨

absolutely! with Boeing dropping doors and sometimes whole planes (and maybe Starliners?), its an excellent time to stop regulating safety in the air and space. This is the kind of brilliant thinking thats going to get Trump back into the White House I just know it!

Agree. However, the Congressman did not order the FAA to approve anything. The letter 'encourages' FAA to get off the dime and move the approval along.
