Have you tried or seen any one try to run a suck "tab" rather then a suck gate? Mount the suction cups to the lower stern with a plate hanging/pointing down to simulate a tab? Or even the botton of the boat? Maybe even run a suck gate and a suck tab simultaneously? Obviously would be challenging to be swapping sides back and forth.. but for the sake of chasing a fun affordable wave I wonder how it would work?! Even add some manual adjustability to the plate to find that sweet spot!

I have seen guys try running one on the bottom and the side. It didn't work any better and was a pain in the butt Centurion is doing something neat with their cats fin. It allows them to add a rudder in the middle of the boat that makes it yaw to create the better wave For cheap options I haven't seen anything better than surf mode.

My kids have been pushing for me to replace our old 2011 Mastercraft X2. Even with extra ballast and surf tabs, the wave is short and a bit close to back of boat. Adding a side mounted DIY Suckgate added about 10” of height, increased the volume, and the curl. It’s cleaner and less frothy. Thanks for saving me CDN$175,000😂. My total cost was about $30.00. And 1 hour of time to make it. I’m putting up a nice 4ft curler at Lake Kamaniskeg, Ontario now. Thanks again & cheers!!

That’s a very informative video on surf systems. It’s nice to have all the different options for creating a surf wave in one video. I’ve used a surf gate, aftermarket surf system, and factory installed surf system. They can all do the job, but as you discussed, as you move up the various price points, you’ll get a more automated system. My surf plates move down, thanks for the explanation on why that is better.

Glad you found it beneficial. I know a lot of people have questions about surf systems and its a pain in the butt trying to type it all out. So much better having a video now that they can just be refered to.

This video is amazing! I agree 100%, Centurion and Supreme do make the best wave. Tabs that go down are way more customizable and gives a better wave. I actually own the Supreme that you showed in the video! I absolutely love the wave on it.

I have a Heyday surf. The hull is designed to make a pretty good wave w ballast as well. I use a nauticurl shaper (gate) and I think it’s makes better waves than boats with build in systems for half their price. I’m happy with and love our surfing wave. Nice video.

Very informative! I had a 2015 Moomba Mojo that had small manually-deployable side tabs, and a pretty lame wave. I built various suck-gates that helped, and eventually a “ghetto-gate” that was basically a manual copy of the Malibu system that attached to the swim platform on my Moomba. It made a decent wave, especially on the Goofy side. I attached it to a 24’ Malibu that had a wedge, but no surfgate, IIRC. The wave was pretty lame even with my ghetto-gate. Next, I bought a 2016 Natique G21. The wave was better, but I immediately traded it back in on a 2017 G23. I ran 1000# of lead in addition to the 2,850# of factory ballast. The wave, of-course, was MUCH better than the G21. The best wave I ever surfed was a 2017 Malibu LSV25 with extra plug+play ballast. It was long and did not have the trough near the transom that sometimes snagged the front of my board when surfing the G23. I surfed behind a 2020 Malibu LSV21. It was lame, but the water was rough. A buddy has a 2022 Mastercraft 24’ surfboat. The wave seemed about like my G23. I always thought of Supreme’s and Centurions as low-end boats, but now I am looking forward to trying and maybe buying one!
@GearsAndTech
@GearsAndTech 2 месяца назад
Let us know how it goes. I always felt the same way about centurion. They aren't even styled in a way that makes you think it's nice. But once you ride behind one, you won't want to ride behind anything else Unless you have money for a pavati, then get that!

Safety aside, just being purely hypothetical, how do you think a stern drive could perform with ballast, tabs, suck gate in comparison to a DD or V drive? It would be really interesting to a comparison between the two.
@GearsAndTech
@GearsAndTech Месяц назад
I know people that surf behind a stern drive. In 15 years of surfing, I've never seen 1 wipeout where anyone was close to where a prop would be if you were using a stern drive However, having the prop under the boat means the odds of someone having an accident are very very slim Safety aside, a stern drive will surf just fine

What happens if you combine a sideways and a down surf system? What do the center wedges, flaps, and "wings" do, and how do each of those 3 differ when changing the wave?
@GearsAndTech

Add side sick gate in the middle of the boat in line with the tower tow point and it helps a lot
@jflowers090
@jflowers090 2 года назад
Can you talk about moombas and supra surf system? With moomba being somewhat affordable compared to other surf boats.
@GearsAndTech
@GearsAndTech 2 года назад
The supra and moomba systems work similar to the centurion and supreme. Both systems go down, and are very good implementations. The flow 3.0 on moomba is interesting having the secondary actuator. I prefer less moving parts whenever possible, so im not sure how it will work long term. But the wave will still be great with either one
@ridemtns13
@ridemtns13 Год назад
What about MasterCraft wedge system? Since it sinks the stern, it’s similar outcome as a tab going down? I guess it also changes angle of entire boat?
@GearsAndTech
@GearsAndTech Год назад
The Mastercraft system doesn't pull the back end down, it lifts one side up and pushes the other side down. Same as all the other down firing systems They add an extra little flip to it at the inside edge and the back inside edge. That's actually to give the boat a bit of a yaw that you have to steer against. This helps clean the wave face as well
@ridemtns13

At what angle do the down trim tab style go. Would regular trim rams be strong enough to push that large of a tab? What if I use my existing trim rams and fab my own tabs and remount the rams to push further down. Just a theory wondering if I’m shooting too far on this
@GearsAndTech
@GearsAndTech 11 месяцев назад
You're exactly on track Yes you can use trim tabs, make a bigger plate and mount the ram arm further out so it drops the tab lower

The part where you mention patent infringement and say that "there has to be 3 major changes to avoid copyright infringement" is not true. Patented claims cannot be used for the term of the patent, despite if there has been changes. Also, copyright is different from patents. Copyright refers to creative work, not inventions.
@GearsAndTech
@GearsAndTech 2 года назад
I'm pretty sure they have design patents on all the systems. You can't copy the way they achieve the result, but if you can find a different way to get the result it's no issue

Does anyone make a system to increase wake height when on plane at higher speeds like 18-23mph?
@GearsAndTech
@GearsAndTech Год назад
Wake is all about displacing water. At higher speed the boat planes too much for surfing For wakeboarding its still about sinking the boat as much as you can
@thejfactors
@thejfactors Год назад
@@GearsAndTech yes this is primarily in regards to wakeboarding, I have ballast, I was thinking about building something similar to trim tabs that would force water downwards at high speeds so i could trim the outboard up and ideally counteract the effect of the trim tabs while hopefully forcing the boat hull to displace more water at high speed. Alternatively I could build something that forces the rear of the boat deeper with speed, essentially a low angle of attack wing producing downforce by redirecting water at the edge of transom upwards. Guessing there might be some adverse side effects while turning though with the second option.
@GearsAndTech
@GearsAndTech Год назад
You're basically describing what Malibu tried to do with the wedge If you're in an io boat trimming up and ballast is going to be best
