Hello everybody.
Back on the road, today we came to visit two beautiful locations, Caldas da Rainha and Óbidos.
As always, before telling the brief review of our day, here's the vídeo time line.

Caldas da rainha
Is a city full of history located in the district of Leiria, municipality of Caldas da Rainha.
Around here we can find a very calm, clean city, with a very clean and pleasant garden/forest, a spa with thermal waters, a fresh fruit market that is over 500 years old, among other things.
As soon as we arrived we talked about the main figure of this city, Queen Dona Leonor (1458-1525), that reigned from 1481 to 1495.
Next we went to visit the Fruit Square, which, according to history, is around 500 years old.
This market still operates today in the original location where it began its activity during the 15th century.
According to legend, the square where the market takes place was offered by Queen Dona Leonor herself to farmers in the region to sell their products.
This is the only open-air market in Portugal that runs daily. Have you ever thought about how convenient it is to find fresh fruit every day in an open-air market, and with the certainty that most of these products come from local producers?
Right next door we went to visit the Dona Leonor forest, which, as the name suggests, was planted by the Queen herself to protect the thermal water springs that supply the Rainha D. Leonor Thermal Hospital.
It is a forest of around 17 hectares full of biodiversity and beauty.
Within this garden, there is the José Malhoa Museum, where a collection of paintings and sculptures from the 19th and 20th centuries by the painter José Malhoa is on display.
It's worth the visit.
Then we left for Rainha D. Leonor Thermal Hospital. Founded in 1485 by Queen D. Leonor, this Thermal Hospital, which is around 500 years old, is the oldest in the world.
You should take a look at this hospital because it has numerous benefits for your health especially in the scope of the respiratory system, rheumatic and skeletal muscles..
After a brief walk through some streets of the city, about 6.5 km (4 miles) away we went to visit Óbidos.

Óbidos
Is a village located in the district of Leiria, municipality of Óbidos.
It is a very well preserved village, part of which is surrounded by a medieval wall that gives it a touch of special beauty.
It's very easy to be dazzled by the flower-filled streets of this small village. In addition to the beauty that we can visit every day, this location also offers many cultural events, namely, the best known are the International Chocolate Festival, the Medieval Market and Óbidos Vila Natal.
A must do in Óbidos: climb the walls; drink a Ginjinha in a chocolate glass.
Why choose Caldas da Rainha for holidays or to live?
Relatively close to Lisbon, Excellent access roads nearby (motorway), Historic city, calm and full of cultural events, Clean city, Beach within walking distance, Good quality of life in general.

As someone who lives next to the Obidos Castle and shops in Caldas da Rainha....you did an excellent job capturing the experience of both amazing places. The festivals at the castle are fantastic and Caldas has several events at the park too. Thank you for sharing.

I am Jametta from U.S.A. I was there inside the walls of the village in Obidos in July. It was beautiful and the shops were great. I also enjoyed the Ginjinha💜.

The "ginginha" in a chocolate cup is simply divine. :) I didn't go into the stores much, but I could see from the outside that they also had a lot of very beautiful traditional products. Hello Vance. Thank you very much for the comment. My grandparents were all very special to me. I recently lost my grandmother, who was the only one still alive. But life is like that, made up of gains and losses. We are left with the good memories and tributes now. I felt very good in that church. I felt peace and "longing" (saudade). Hello from Portugal. You should visit without a doubt, one day will be enough for both places. I suggest visiting Caldas da Rainha in the morning and having lunch in a good traditional restaurant. The food is delicious. After lunch, go to Óbidos, drink your "gininha" and enjoy a beautiful walk around the town, and if you're lucky, a beautiful sunset at the top of the wall. I'm full heart for having managed to get the message across about the elderly in Portugal. I could write dozens of pages about this, but I can't do it here. I'm very sad to see a generation that worked hard, literally from sunrise to sunset, not being able to enjoy their old age with quality. Many people, fighting for their lives, sell what they produce in their garden to buy medicine or food. The small gesture of looking at these people with a different perspective can bring them a lot of happiness and well-being. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for listening to me and understanding the message I wanted to convey. May your visit to Portugal be an unforgettable experience. Nazaré is a magical land, from sea to land. In my village, the story goes that it was founded by people from Nazaré, I don't know if that's true as they are more than 100 km away from each other. By the way, and revealing my ideas a little, Nazaré is on my list of places to film. I think it was a good choice, it's a land of good food, and very good people. Obrigado José

Jose, I love the way you talk to the camera as a direct address, as if your audience is there with you with comments such as "I want to show this to you" and "I hope you liked that"! I really feel that I am there with you through all your adventures. I especially loved it when you took out a wine glass, uncorked a bottle of wine, and made a toast to us, your audience, after having scaled down a rocky, dangerous path to the beach at Praia do Ribeiro do Cavalo. Hello from Portugal. :) You can't imagine how full my heart is when I read your words. It's wonderful to see that someone managed to read the message I'm trying to convey, and that's a very good feeling. I try my best to convey the message of what I feel and what I like to see. I want to take people who have never been to Portugal to feel what they can feel when they come here in person. Besides, I know that, especially the people who follow me, they like what I do and the feeling I convey, so my toast is always for them. It was quite an adventure going down to the beach, and the climb up was also above all fun. With a few stops in between, enjoy the landscape and continue climbing with my glass of wine. You make me dream of Portugal. In fact, your videos take me through that dream! I was enchanted by the forest with the holly berries or that beautiful park with the dense, overhanging trees. Thank you so much, Jose, for taking us with you to Obidos and Caldas da Rainha, both beautiful places in their own way. Obidos is an absolutely enchanting place, so full of characterful, historic buildings. I especially loved the beautiful centuries-old tiles at the entrance and in the church. It was great seeing so many fascinating nooks and crannies everywhere. My heart was in my mouth, though, when you were on the castle wall/battlements! I could feel the vertigo - I hate heights! 😱Your video was like a fascinating journey back in time. The churches were indeed lovely to see. My condolences on the loss of your beloved grandmother, God rest her soul. It was very special that you remembered her and your deceased loved ones by lighting a candle in their memory. In my native country of Ireland, we would say: “That their faithful hearts may be at God’s right hand.” If you filmed this on Sunday October 7th, the black banners in Caldas may be expressing sadness for the dreadful events that took place in Israel the day before. 😔 It is tragic that, so many hundreds of years after Obidos Castle was built, some parts of the world still need strong fortifications to keep its vulnerable occupants safe.

Hello Caroline. Thank you very much for the comment and feedback on the video. It's always good to hear other opinions. Óbidos is a unique village that transports us back in time. If you visit during the medieval fair then the atmosphere is really fantastic. We really felt the emotion of living at that time. I also really liked the tiles at the entrance. In fact, I like old tiles in general. The wall part also scared me, but I avoided looking too far down. The church moment was very beautiful. I felt very good inside and I missed those who have already left. Thank you for your words. My grandparents were all very special to me. It was filmed on October 1st, but I really don't know what those black bands mean. It can be solidarity with a cause, even if it is international. The Portuguese in general are very compassionate towards any suffering. Thanks again for watching and for the comment. Obrigado José

@riseagainportugal the people there were so nice and I love the laid back simplicity they live. When I was in gradeschool, 10 years old, I had done a study on Portugal with a book report. This is when I fell head over heals for your country. The history and all the explorers...etc. I can remember saying that someday I will visit. And so I did...both mainland and the island of Madiera. I've tried to get my husband to move there but he didn't want to. But recently he went to be with Jesus so now iam pondering what to do. The world is in quite alot of unrest so iam waiting....

Hello. I was really excited about your story of the work you did during elementary school. Yes, Portugal has an unquestionable rich history, dating back to the time when we were brave and traveled for months across the sea, without a clear destination. We just followed the stars. I am so sorry for the loss of your husband. My deepest feelings are with you. Your beloved husband has become your little star and I am convinced that he will be happy where you are happy too. Just follow your little star and do what makes you happy. The world has always been very busy, but in the past we didn't have access to all the information so quickly. @@riseagainportugal l have been going to Portugal since 2009 but never been to those areas, just Lisbon but mainly holidays were in the Algarve. I intend to retire in North parts in about 2 years time 🙂

I personally love Lisbon (where I work) and Algarve (where I spend part of my summer holidays). But if you have that possibility, you should choose two or three areas outside that circuit and do some real gastronomy, culture and tradition tourism. This would help a lot when choosing where to live. I am pleased to see that you chose the north of the country to live, as they are very welcoming people. Two years is just around the corner, and time is flying by.

Olá José, boa noite, Obrigada! Adorei este vídeo. É bom ver alguém a descobrir sítios pela primeira vez. Eu vivi em Atouguia da Baleia (Peniche) durante 3 meses e tive aulas de português, duas vezes por semana, em Óbidos... por isso passei muito tempo a passear pela vila dentro e fora das muralhas do castelo. Estive lá no Natal e gostei muito da aldeia de Natal. Tenho uma amiga que está a viver aqui perto e que este ano foi à Feira Medieval e ao Festival do Chocolate. Já estive nas Caldas algumas vezes e adorei as cerâmicas da Loja da Fábrica - Bordallo Pinheiro e comprei algumas peças que me são queridas. Da próxima vez que estiver na zona, talvez goste de visitar a Lagoa de Óbidos, o Nadadouro, a Foz do Arelho... e depois subir até São Martinho para o Porto e Nazaré. Podem ser todas visitadas num dia, praticamente. Eu adorava viver em Atouguia. Peniche é uma boa cidade pequena tipicamente portuguesa. O Baleal é absolutamente lindo (apelidado de Baleal Bonito). Adorei estar tão perto do mar. E fica perto da Lourinhã, que é outra grande cidade pequena e a sua própria Praia Areia Branca é uma cidade/vila de praia maravilhosa. Foi a minha preferida para o pôr do sol de inverno, para além do Cabo Carvoeiro, em Peniche. A verdade é que Portugal está cheio de sítios maravilhosos, lugares para visitar e lugares para viver e tem algo para todos!!! Fico a aguardar os vossos próximos vídeos!!! Tenham uma óptima semana. Eu conheço muito bem a zona de Atouguia da Baleia, Peniche, Foz do Arelho, São Martinho do Porto, basicamente toda essa zona do Oeste, e sem dúvida que se tivesse que escolher uma zona para viver seria essa. Tem uma excelente localização, e locais absolutamente fantásticos. Dá para ter uma ideia da boa qualidade de vida que podemos ter aí. Óbidos é mágico, e pelo menos na Feira de Natal e na Medieval, fica tudo muito mais deslumbrante. Agora fiquei curioso por experimentar um chocolate quente com ginginha... deve ser muito bom. Um dia destes gostaria de filmar também na Foz do Arelho e subir um pouco também até à Nazaré. Tenho também muito boas recordações de Peniche, e lembro bem da beleza dos areais das suas praias. Nunca vi um pôr do sol nessas praias, apenas vi do topo da Serra de Montejunto, que tem uma vista maravilhosa em dias limpos, sobre as praias do Oeste. Eu estou muito impressionado com o facto de escrever muito bem português. A Jen também consegue falar fluente? E mais uma coisa que gostava de saber, pois é dificil encontrar alguém que não é nativo e aprende português. É muito dificil a aprendizagem do português? I know the area of Atouguia da Baleia, Peniche, Foz do Arelho, São Martinho do Porto very well, basically the whole area of the West, and without a doubt if I had to choose an area to live it would be this one. It has an excellent location, and absolutely fantastic places. You can get an idea of the good quality of life we can have there. Óbidos is magical, and at least at the Christmas and Medieval Fairs, everything is much more stunning. Now I'm curious to try a hot chocolate with ginginha... it must be really good. One of these days I would also like to film in Foz do Arelho and go up a little to Nazaré. I also have very good memories of Peniche, and I remember well the beauty of its sandy beaches. I've never seen a sunset on these beaches, I've only seen it from the top of Serra de Montejunto, which has a wonderful view on clear days, over the beaches of the West. I am very impressed with the fact that you write Portuguese very well. Can Jen also speak fluently? And one more thing I would like to know, because it is difficult to find someone who is not a native speaker and learns Portuguese. Is learning Portuguese very difficult? Boa Tarde José!! I'll answer in English 😃 I'll be very honest with you. I use a very good translation application to help me. I've been lightly studying European Portuguese for a few years now, ever since my stay in Atouguia. It really helps me to learn the words, and to write as well. With this app I speak into it ,in Portuguese, to see if it understands me (sometimes yes, sometimes no, LOL). I have much more trouble with the auditory part of learning languages but I'm pretty good with the visual (reading and writing is much easier for me)... I also studied Latin and Spanish many years ago. 'They' are correct, it's a challenging language to learn... but I'm determined. I'm from Canada's capital and our official second language is French... another language that is littered with a lot of rules in it's grammar. When I was growing up we had basic French classes and they really focused on grammar as opposed to focusing on teaching us how to communicate verbally... and then the country became bilingual and many of my generation were left out because we'd completed school... but it became difficult for us (Anglophones) to get jobs. I am determined to be conversational in Portuguese... one day! Estou a gostar muito dos seus vídeos. Adoro as opiniões pessoais que partilha de uma perspetiva nativa. Parece preocupar-se profundamente com as pessoas... algo que também significa muito para mim. Conheci as pessoas mais maravilhosas quando vivi em Portugal... A minha vizinha idosa, por exemplo. Ela não falava uma palavra de inglês e eu tinha acabado de chegar e não sabia nada de português... e ela conversava e abraçava-me... sorriamos. No Natal, ela trouxe-me um prato de donuts caseiros (acho que se chamavam Sonhos ou Filozes). Trouxe a sua neta mais nova para ajudar a traduzir. Sempre que precisei, estava lá alguém simpático e feliz por ajudar. Uma vez tive problemas com o bocal de uma garrafa de gás... (afinal o bocal da garrafa de gás estava defeituoso e não fui eu). Quando lá cheguei pela primeira vez, tive de comprar óleo para o carro, e o colega da oficina limpou uma garrafa grande de Pepsi e encheu-a de óleo, para o caso de eu precisar de mais. Tive de fazer uma reparação no carro que conduzia e o Hugo teve a amabilidade de me levar à zona da oficina para me mostrar as redondezas... Agora tenho amigos de longa data em Portugal e em breve, espero que muito em breve, tenciono emigrar e estabelecer-me na Costa de Prata. Quando fui a Portugal, encontrei o sítio que não sabia que estava à procura. A minha casa! @@riseagainportugal

Hi Jen. Sorry for the late response, but YT doesn't always notify me, so I have to constantly check them one by one. Even using an app, I praise your determination. It's great that we put technology at our service. I'm sure it will be a great help, at least in the oral reproduction of words, since you don't spend time with native speakers to train. Yes, it's true, teachers focus a lot on grammar and end up leaving aside the practical concept of getting children to practice verbal communication. I know a little English but I confess that I left aside studying some grammar, I try to speak spontaneously. I know that sometimes I make mistakes but I assume it's a minor thing. I'm sure that one day we will communicate both in Portuguese. :) Yes, I am very humanistic, and I am concerned about the suffering and poor conditions of other people. The story you told me about your neighbor is so, so Portuguese that you can't even imagine it. I see my mother perfectly doing what your neighbor did to you. This is what being Portuguese is, without a doubt. OMG did you say "filhoses" or "sonhos"? I love eating these typical Christmas sweets. We're approaching the Christmas season and you've already made my mouth water hahaha The situation that happened to you with the gas or the car, I didn't expect any other kind of help from the Portuguese. We can very easily put ourselves in someone else's shoes, and do everything we can to minimize something that isn't going well. We give a lot when it comes to helping. The Silver Coast is a very good area to live. I'm sure that in this dream house you found, you will have a great time, with excellent sunsets. Here I wait for you. I hope it is soon. Abraço José
