Matsutake! We are on the hunt for the Western White Matsutake in the Cascade Mountains, a similar species to the prized Japanese Matsutake. A gilled, white mushroom that is popular worldwide, fetches a high price at markets but also has toxic look alike species (which we cover in this video!). Follow along with us as we show you how to identify this mushroom and read the signs of the Washington, Oregon and Pacific Northwest forests in order to find it.
Whether you know it as the Pine Mushroom, the Matsutake or some other name-this sensational mushroom is unlike any other.

I really enjoy your carefree attitude when tramping around in the forest. I think why I am subscribing is not only that I love to hunt for mushrooms, but I have an acute sense of smell. Very few channels describe things smell like you do, so I can identify so much easier to what you are seeing. Not this really matters for me to say, but when I was in geology in college, I developed a smell test for over 50 different rocks and gems. I could get half the answers correct on a 100 piece test just by smelling. Thanks for wonderful content. :)

I am a cultivator, not exactly impossible to grow them. What I do for the hard to cultivate mushrooms, clone a fresh picked mushroom to agar plates in a lab/flow hood, clean it up in a few transfers. Make lots and lots of liquid culture. Then go out in the forest where looks like they would do good with the liquid culture in a super soaker squirt gun and start spraying it around the trees etc. Then come back the next time they are in season and walla.

Hellow Yellow, : ) I had a really good day and picked a few wonderful pounds of our local ( southeastern North Carolina) oyster mushrooms...well, as we all are used to, there are a few little mushroom beetles in among the gills...Guess what?!!! smiling...If I hold the mushrooms up to a light, especially in an otherwise dark room, I can see right through the cap! Yep, I found each hiding bug, picked them out, gave them the deluxe trip to my compost pile and now I have unquestionably bug-less oyster mushrooms! whoo-hoo! As much as I enjoy your kindred spirit I had to share this simple evolution of my mushrooming. Smiling, George.

Great info! The forest here on Vancouver Island has a lot of cedar and not a lot of pine trees- can Matsutake still be found? Do they prefer more or less sunshine? Thanks a lot for your enthusiasm!
@YellowElanor
@YellowElanor 4 года назад
Yes, they can be found on Vancouver Island! They don't have a relationship with cedar (as far as I know), but get in an area with a mix of fir and pine (even if they're sparse), I believe the Allatropa virgata plant also grows up that way, so keep an eye out for that too. More or less sunshine is not much of a factor.

It’s a yes for me, this is how I learn. You go and try to read about this stuff, and the terms can be relentless. When I came across Mycorrhizal, I started to think snoopdogg had something to do with it. Fo rizzle. Point is there is so many things to keep straight or to get side tracked by, and she manages to break an abundance of info down into comprehensible bits. It’s on point, she’s on point.

Depending on where you are, you need a commercial harvesting permit first, then find a local 'mushroom buyer'--someone who buys mushrooms in bulk that then distributes them. Mushroom buyers typically set up shop seasonally in small towns near the mountains where the most mushrooms are.

Ive used craigslist, local farmers markets, buy sell trade forums on facebook, etc. Wholesale buyers pay on the lower end not really worth it especially for chanterelles.

@YellowElanor 4 года назад
Hi Suzanne, they are likely a Fomitopsis species. The specific species, I am unsure of. You can do some additional research on Fomitopsis to learn about the group of mushrooms, I'd recommend looking into a local resource for the most accurate information on what grows in your area and what qualities they may have (edible, medicinal, toxic, look-alike species etc...). This brief shot of the mushroom in the video doesn't give enough detail to compare and contrast species you may find, there are many things that look similar. Please be careful when asking for identification when on online platforms like this, especially for edibility and consumption. I've seen a lot of people give poor or inadequate advice, also someone may be from a different part of the world than you and their info won't match what you have local to you. Their are however, great forums dedicated to the education and identification of mushrooms online, search them out, buy a locally focused field guide and join a mushroom club! Those are some great resources that will really help you out in learning what things are called and if they're safe to eat.

I live in Oregon on the coast and I still haven't chanced upon Matsutake, would you make a video on tree identification and possibly talk about the age of the forest being a factor in finding certain mushrooms. I also hear that places that have recently burned or been logged could be good places to look for certain types. My biggest interest though is being able to positively ID the trees I come across. For those who have never tried a matsutake be forewarned. Though most people seem to love them, for me personally these are the most detestable tasting and smelling mushrooms in the world. After trying one (in Oregon) I couldn’t get the remains out of the house fast enough. Even walking near the trash can afterwards was completely disgusting. And that even though the mushrooms were triple bagged and buried under another bag of trash. Ick!! Terrible.

Bees love mushrooms. If u have a mushroom patch bees will go in and suckle. I had a small oyster patch that was exuding this sugary crystal sap, the bees love that stuff.
