Running Sonoma 14.3.1 and found that these files are now stored in /Users/xxxx/Library/Group Containers/group.com.apple.VoiceMemos.shared

In general, you can get a sense of where the voice memo files are located by dragging a voice memo into a terminal shell (or copy voice memo, then paste into terminal). For me, I had to enable full disk access in privacy and security in order to be able to browse files in the voice memos directory.

Wow, I hadn't seen this approach before. Thanks a lot for letting me know. Dragging doesn't work for me, but copy-pasting does. What I think happened starting in Sonoma is that stored Voice Memos are encrypted, thus it doesn't matter whether you get to the real location of the files because you won't see the M4A files. What you get by copy-pasting is a temporary location of the decrypted file. I may be wrong. Thanks again for the pointer, Chester! Nono

Hi! Do you have any advice for renaming the files from my computer? I opened the macbook app and started renaming all my voice memos that had been recorded on my phone, but later when I opened my phone and the macbook app again, they had all gone back to their old names

Hi, Angie! Do you mean renaming them in Voice Memos? I recommend to rename them directly in the device you've recorded them, as that name will show up in your other devices. If you want to keep that naming when taking files out of Voice Memos, you'll have to drag and drop from Voice Memos on Mac to your Desktop or a Finder folder. Once you do that, renaming the audio files copied to your computer won't affect the names of the files in Voice Memos. I hope this helps! Kindly, Nono

What about voice memos on apple watch? My kid figured out that the only way to get music to come out of the speaker on an Apple Watch (no they don't want to use bluetooth) is to record audio with their Apple Watch memos app! Now I could rip some tunes to M4a files and then copy them back to the watch we'd be golden! The only way to get them back to the watch seems to be to text them to the watch but then they play but are not added to memos app.

Is there a way to select all voice memos on the mac app and drag them all to a separate folder on mac? Im trying to preserve the names of the notes and doing it one by one will take forever (for some reason cmnd+A is not available)

Me neither. Files are not on this Folder Anymore, should be interesting know "Where" they are now. (macOS Ventura) One by ONE through the app is a pain

Hey, Rudoming! It seems macOS Sonoma discontinued the practice to put the files in the com.apple.voicememos folder and opted for encrypting them. The only way to retrieve the files that I know of now is through drag-and-dropping from the Voice Memos app, as show in 1:52. I hope this helps! Nono

hi i like the idea of the voice memo but when I record thru my mic and interface the voice memo comes out mono, do you know the fix to this?

Hey, Javii! That will depend on the audio source you're using to record in Voice Memos, which has support for Stereo and Mono sources. My guess is that your interface is bringing you audio input as Mono and Voice Memos captures it that way. Try recording audio with QuickTime to see if that changes and look online how to capture Stereo audio with your audio interface. I hope this helps! Cheers, =) Nono

This doesn’t work for MacOS Sonoma. At least for me, Voice Notes isn’t visible anymore. I see a new feature called sync Desktop & Documents. Any solutions yet?

That's right, Miguel-Angel. The location of the voice notes has changed in Sonoma. ~/Library/Group\ Containers/group.com.apple.VoiceMemos.shared/ For more info, please read nono.ma/voice-memos and let me know if you find out something else! Thanks! Nono

Why go through the initial process of finding the timestamped files if you can simply open the Voice Memo app and copy from there? That is by far the simplest method.

@ Because some people like me have thousands of voice notes and you can't drag and drop all those in bulk from the app. You have to do each one individually and it sucks.

Yes, this is not the best user interface. You can browse to the folder but then you lose the names you set in Voice Memos.

Hey, Jeevan! This method could help if you open Voice Memos on a Mac that has the same iCloud account and iCloud Voice Memos synchronization enabled. Otherwise, you can always click the three-dot icon on iOS and Share the voice note file via email or other methods. I hope this helps! Cheers,

Agreed, Napaked. It seems Apple added encryption in macOS Sonoma, which means we can't find the m4a files anymore through Finder, only through drag-and-dropping the files. Cheers, Nono

That's right, you lose that data. That's why I put a timestamp in the filename because the file gets "recreated" when you drag and drop.

Hey, @VarHyid! What operating system are you running? Note that if you try to open the folder via Terminal, you'll have to properly escape spaces as "\ " and/or replace the username in the example - e.g., john or nono - with the active username. Let me know if I can help! Kindly, Nono

@ I'm on Ventura and it's just not there. I tried searching via Spotlight, manually navigating to the folder, cross-referenced the location with several written articles about it and it's just not there. I ended up dragging & dropping each voice note from the voice notes app to Finder manually. The only reason I can think of why it would not work is because all those notes were taken on my phone, synced with iCloud and then the Voice Notes app on my Mac would sync them from the cloud. Maybe that's when it actually doesn't make a copy locally? BTW, I also searched for individual names of the recordings to check if they're in some other location, but they were nowhere to be found.

Why Mac need users to have PhD to accesst to their own Voice Memo files? Doesn't work Users/yourname/Library/Application Support/com.apple.voicememos/

It's hard, I know. I think they're hiding these away for security from the file system. But it may also be because they want you to use Voice Memos as a storage system for Voice Memos and not deal with the files, which for some of us is not a great pattern. There are other comments that show a solution for newer macOS systems.
