As you mentioned it in the video, will you also be making a specific video on 'dressing for the face'? I think it'd be really interesting to have a dedicated video with more examples of certain designers' styles working with different faces like the example you gave in the one video where you showed the clip of Hoyeon Jung walking for LV FW22. It'd also be a great gateway for the styling services that you'll be offering as there is not much easily digestible content out there on styling for the face, you'd have to go through a lot of different designers' shows and seasons to find out what aesthetic works for you

I've never heard of the concept of Aesthetic Labour before but I really like it. As a woman I put a lot of time into how I dress and I think for a while society treated it as a "frivolous"/girly thing; but when you think about it what's so different about curating an outfit to, say, weightlifting for aesthetic purposes. Its still something that requires investment and study, and I think the impact it has is just as powerful, if not more for my female gaze. (I would prefer a guys outfit to show personality over muscles every time and I'm sure im not alone )
@tminus21

@alexforce9
@alexforce9 2 года назад
There is a bit of logical fallacy in that part of the video and your though process. The problem is - showing muscles IS showing personality , just majority of women dont like this type of personality. Its no different than wearing suit on the beach or a lot of golden chains. Its not that men are not showing who they are, its that women dont like men who are like that.
@fcukyaas
@fcukyaas 2 года назад
@@alexforce9 @Alex Force i think that is false, because most people are not invested in showing off their personality when trying to attract a mate, theyre trying to conform to an ideal of masculinity that they understand as "having bulging muscles" because they have a literal and visual understanding of masculinity. Women tend to be less literal and subjective in their interpretation of masculinity. It doesnt reflect who they are, just an ideal they are trying to pursue. That said, theres many men who are naturally more "macho" or have the kind of personality you speak of. Its just that... its only a personality type among many. While the video adresses a general tendency in men who don't know how to style themselves.
@alexforce9
@alexforce9 2 года назад
@@fcukyaas Trying to show of your masculinity in this way IS showing off your personality. Its even in the video itself. How women see those type of men is not macho - its "try hard". Try hard IS a personality type.
@missmillienettleton
@missmillienettleton 2 года назад
@@alexforce9 i get what you're saying- and i think what i said agrees, no "logical fallacy" because I was talking about dressing for the female gaze; for example if someone is tossing up wearing a loose fitting, jazzy patterned shirt but isn't sure if they should go for it because it doesn't show off their physique (what patriarchal standards tell men should be their defining feature); they might opt for a safe tight fitting black tee. Im just saying they shouldn't feel discouraged if they're looking to excite the female gaze because showing that side of your personality holds more currency with most women then the part of your personality that cares about muscles.

Dressing for the face is such an important yet overlooked thing. For example I'm a Cinderella type with tiny head, slim face and honey colour hair. Whenever I dress too chavy, ethnic or too heavy metal I look like a clown. I just go for minimalist "expensive" millennial or something really feminine. People often can't get why I feel more comfortable in a dress than in a tracksuit but it just feels good to look like yourself.

The average quality of menswear is actually much higher than womenswear, if you just stop buying from fast fashion brands and go into mid to high quality clothes. Womenswear changes in fashion cycles that are much faster and therefore it is often not really meant to last (so it uses cheaper, often synthetic materials), and rather most of what you pay goes into the constant design work. Menswear is much more static and spends on quality material and construction instead, sometimes even forgetting that design is also important in fact. Don't believe me? Try to buy a 100% wool overcoat for women, then try for men. The latter is easy, the former near impossible unless going into astronomical prices.

I have a theory that not dressing for your face is one of the biggest causes of clothing purchases that people go on to regret or never wear: Whenever i have too many clothing items on my wishlist, i make a point of going back, looking at the on-body shots of each item, and actually imagining *my* face in the photo instead of the model's. A lot of the time I will quickly realise that that jacket or pair of trousers that i *thought* i absolutely loved, actually wouldn't look right on me AT ALL, because it doesnt work with my face - doing this helps me eliminate a ton of items from my wishlist, and since i started doing this two or three years ago ive only really bought one item that i ended up regretting. This is obviously important for shopping online, but it's also important for shopping in person; that one item i regretted I actually bought in person, but while I was trying it on, I wasn't paying attention to how it fit my face - in fact, i honestly might even have been imagining the face of some model i'd seen wearing something similar, that gave me the idea for that item in the first place. The other thing is, when you imagine your face in something you don't just start thinking about whether it fits your face, but also whether it fits your personality, whether it feels "like you"; that helps a ton with the other aim of making your style an artistic expression of yourself.

A funny observation of mine is that in my experience women that dress the skimpiest often tend to wear the lowest quality clothes, which makes it so much worse. Like, if you actually want to wear a skimpy outfit, imo it is even *more* important that it's good quality and well designed if you want it to look sexy rather than tacky and bland, regardless of how much "genetically gifted" you are.

I love that this channel, in general, is absolutely open about the truths, benefits and problems of attractiveness in general. The fact that this person states that "fashion is multiplicative" alone feels like someone is actually just saying it and not beating around the bush. It bothers people because they think attraction and beauty are necessities to be loved or wanted. They confused "attraction" with "bonding". You can become intimately bonded to, and attracted to, somebody who is not very conventionally attractive and there's nothing wrong with that. Beauty is one of many aspects and though it does come with a lot of benefits, it also has many risks to it. Although truthfully, attraction is a very powerful part of social interactions so it's fair for some people to be bothered by the thoughts that they are not considered beautiful. It's just the truth, though, that existing beauty is the foundation and everything beyond that is expressed BY your looks, not the other way around.
@amazin7006
@amazin7006 2 года назад
Bonding IS attraction. Love IS attraction. People don't have it confused, they are just in tune with their biological wiring. We've created a false a categorical difference between "love" and "attraction", when neurologically they do not exist. The feeling from our biological signalling that a man gets when he loves a woman is identical to the feeling one gets from seeing an attractive woman. It's not an illusion, its just how our brains work. Parents genuinely do love their more attractive offspring more, they're not imagining it, they are feeling it.

I have been flipflopping between styles and it's such a drag. I've only ever felt comfortable wearing button downs and vests (with a suit jacket if it isn't too hot) since I was 15 -- had an interesting first career starting young that required this more classic yet individualized look. Now I realize that I only ever feel like myself when wearing it. Why not just wear it all the time -- it can be varied up so easily while keeping the same style -- if it makes me stretch out my body language and feel cozy in my own skin (vests give a strangely armored feeling that relaxes me). I have never seen a video so well done explaining why things just don't work with fashion advice. Thanks QOVES. PS: People treat me better when I'm dressed like myself. Like if you look similar to Dwayne Johnson it's best not to dress like a slim guy from an indie rock band. And the other way around. I saw some people who looked nice totally butchered their looks, trying to do this, cause they thought that they felt different then their face looks. Like someone with Jude Law's potential was trying to be a Dwalin dwarf or something. It kinda hurts my feelings.

I honestly want to wear the style that has the combination of e-boy, punk and femboy at the same time. However due to social backlash, I've received a lot of criticism. This video encouraged to try and be myself again. I have a feminine body and I just can't wear like some muscular guys who keep wearing tight clothes that feel like they can be torn apart with slightest movements
@thats_odd
@thats_odd 2 года назад
if you got social backlash from "e-boy punk femboy" it probably doesnt suit you. plus, the video does not approve of the tight clothes about to tear off style, so you dont have to wear that.
@subliminalfalllenangel2108
@subliminalfalllenangel2108 2 года назад
@@thats_odd I don't think that was the case, because backlashes mainly came from my family who are more conservative. They said it was inappropriate and that I looked like a slut(yes, the style can be sexual, especially with my feminine body). However, they still had to admit that it suited me. I live in a country where the level of social conformity is high(communist country) and revealing too much skin or standing out too much is stigmatized and slandered. Still, random strangers on the streets sometimes say I look handsome and some even wanted to take pictures with me. A professional photographer asked me if I was a foreign model. And so on...

If you think that average men already look average what do you lose when trying to at least differentiate from the other average men by showing that you have a style and are proud of it? Fashion sense is one of the few characteristics that you notice at first look that you can change. I sadly think men have this 8-80 vision where they think that since they dont look like henry cavill or something they should not even try, when women are total opposites.

IMO good style has 3 parts 1. Dress to your traits/lifestyle, or at very least the traits you want to become. There needs to be a congruency between your clothing and who you are/want to be. 2. FIt. Your clothing is in a way, makeup for your body. You need to dress in a way that compliments your body and makes your frame look better and your body more proportional. There are also ways to "tease" through clothing ex: through jewelry and showing neck/wrists etc. 3. Minimalism. Do not be the guy who looks like he spent an hour on his outfit. You want it to be simple. You dont want to stand out too much, but also look excellent in your clothing. Theres a balance. Nailing looking good w/o trying hard is an art. But its a big turn off if you look like fashion is a huge part of you life, because it shows you arent doing more important things.

Honestly, I couldn't even fathom going "I wear this bc someone says it is good to wear this". I mean I do actually do that but for work and work only. You know, where I have to follow the rules. Outside of that, the things I wear have to have some kind of story or meaning or at least express who I am in the smallest way. Otherwise I'd just be wearing a costume, imo.

I showed my friend Edward Zo's Insta account and joked with her that if men put half the effort he puts into his style into theirs, maybe I wouldn't find them repulsive. That may sound mean, but I can't tell you how many men have approached me trying to hit on me on days when I put lots of efforts into looking cute in the morning, only for me to turn them down (gently). Like, my dude looks like he hasn't changed sweaters in the past ten days and thinks he has a chance when I spent almost three hours getting ready and spent a small fortune finding all the elements of my outfit. Lmao. Sit your ass down. So yeah. Efforts matter, guys.

@LadyPrincessDiana

@@rius3044 Not all of you, I can assure you that. Plus, even if you do, unless you take care of your hair, face, nails (keeping them clean and trimmed) AND style, then you can't realistically expect to land a date with a girl who does ALL these things and who's fit too cus she also goes to the gym. It's a tad frustrating when a guy expects to woo you just because he works out. Like, good for you bro, glad you're in good health, but that's the bare minimum. So my point is, the reward is proportional to the amount of effort you put in yourself. Pamper yourself, and the results will speak for themselves. Of course, that will only help you GET a pretty girl,but if you wanna KEEP her, you might also want to invest in cultivating your mind. Nothing is more attractive than a fit and stylish man who's also cultured and knowledgeable ;)

@LadyPrincessDiana
@LadyPrincessDiana 2 года назад
@@rius3044 *sigh* See, this type of comment is exactly what will be problematic when you'll interact with ladies: you've missed the point. YES, working out is hard. Developing a toned physique is hard for men. But what about the women who work out the same as men? You think girls get the perfect Insta booty by magic? Many of them lift weights too. The only difference is in how heavy they might be for a man vs. a woman, but the effort invested is the same. But add to that all the shaving, waxing, threading (which is PAINFUL), blow drying, styling, colour study to understand what works for our face and training to apply make up correctly (which is HARD), budgeting that goes into any beauty or fashion purchase, dieting, waist training, exercising, etc. and you'll understand that not only what women do is just as hard as what men normally do for themselves, it is also a LOT more things. I'm sorry, and please believe me when I say that I'm telling you this with your best interests in mind, but if you keep thinking "nah, men have it worse than girls' random things" (because NOTHING women do is random), then your perspective going to stay very narrow and all the efforts you are putting into make yourself more handsome will go to waste on account of simply not understanding women at all. Like Gaston in the Beauty and the Beast, basically. I really wish you all the best on your physical and spiritual self-improvement journey. You will need all the good vibes you can get, I feel 😅

@@LadyPrincessDiana I get the idea of hygiene and fitness , Im personally a big advocate of this, but it feels like a lot of women want men to do makeup (or other aesthetic stuff) JUST because women are doing it, I mean not everything that women do will suit men, imagine men wearing pushup bras lol.

I think there is a bit of logical fallacy about the "male gaze" and "female gaze". Men dress like sexy tight condoms coz they think that expressing that part of their personality - being a bit aggressive and "strong" and "tough" but "fashionable" is attractive. So they are emotionally expressing themselves. The problem is - women dont find those type of personalities attractive. Its the olde "Just be yourself! Oh, no! Not like that!" lmao. Just like dressing with hoodies and sweatpants is expression of their desire to be chill and laidback. The main problem men have is just size. - Wear what you like, just let it fit you well, and boom - you are 60 % more stylish without changing anything.

i dunno it feels like the video is suggesting a lot of methods, but i think it matters to ask why dressing up as well... with some sort of goal (for fun, for acceptance by some group, or to get a girlfriend) one will find their motivation and their specific way (say dressing up for girls then u hv certain way to know what girls like) criticising y one doesnt dress up, saying one is lazy or not doing the aesthetic labour, without illustrating a picture of y doing so is making it so boring and tiring...becos dressing up is about fun and accomplishment not just responsibility... but i guess some people prefer practical rules and instruction that makes them feel safe and things are manageable... but the youtube fashion content recommendation is definitely tasteful !!!!! frugal and daniel are both so great!!!! if people need to feel comfortable with dressing up and presenting themselves and just to enjoy to look good, they can also check out icykof's the unknown vlog channel, he is doing sick street interviews with stylish passengers from all over the world

It's about levers. Fashion for men, as a lever for personal value is a weak lever. Finances alone, beat fashion, fitness and general aesthetics because you can buy fashion and fitness with your finances. With enough money, you can buy 4 hours in a day to dedicate solely to your skin care and fitness routine with the best of the best products and professional instruction that money can buy. Women can leverage their aesthetics to get money and although men can sorta do the same, it's just such a weak lever, men have to rely on other methods. I hope this helps explain why, as a man, I kinda don't care much about fashion. I care about my general health(skin care, nutrition and fitness) because those are means of production which will allow me to buy fashion.

I prefer the Italian idea of "easy natural fashion." Essentially its a style where you choose things that look good but it seems easy to do. That's why I have short hair with a fade, shave with a safety razor and wear conservative clothes like jeans and a black shirt but I might have a nice belt. All together its not a lot of work but it does make you stand out and is easy to maintain. I also lift weights but don't roid and do cardio so I still look better than others in that aspect but it's easy to do and looks natural as well.
