We got a call from a business inviting us to sell our flowers out the front of their store. In this episode we go check out that location and give it a go selling from there. Will it work out for us?

BACK STORY
May 2020 we started a flower farm in North East Victoria, Australia. Moroni, utilising his Agricultural Engineering skills, and Phaedra drawing on her years of artistic pursuits. Neither of us had grown flowers, neither had farmed. We didn't have any large equipment, and we had started up on a very tight budget.
Our climate zone is: In Australia we are right on the edge of Mild Temperate (Zone 6) and Cool Temperate (Zone 7). In the USA this is close to zone 8B. Our lowest temperature in Winter is around -5 degrees Celsius, our top temperature in Summer reaches up to 42 degrees Celsius at least a couple of times each Summer.
This is the story of our farm, our florist business and our lifestyle. Enjoy!

Do you have a walk-in cooler for your flowers in summer? If not, have you thought of converting that area next to your office to a cooler with a CoolBot Temperature Controller or a similar product? Seems like a good spot since it is in your studio. And it should be easier if your studio structure is already insulated. All you would have to add is to add doors. And maybe they would sponsor you in some way. (No, I do not work for CoolBot.😎 It is just a thought.}

Hello!! We do plan to set up a room with a cool bot but we are turning a shed into a “flower shack” so plan to do it out there. For now we just have the studio really cold for the summer. We have been fortunate to be able to turn over flowers quickly so far!

It's so strange seeing you get frost when we are just finally getting some warm weather. The roadside selling does seem like a lot of hard work. You need a spot next to a Liquor Store on Friday evenings.😁

Ive said that to Moroni! We need a liquor store spot!! I'll have to go searching for one. I did ask one of the big chain stores but it ended up a wild goose chase trying to speak to someone about it. Thanks Julie!

How about a couple hundred feet up the road, on each side, you could get permission to put a sign up that says "fresh cut flowers in 300 feet" Or maybe if you continue to set up there though, in the future, knowing that, people will be more prepared to stop? 🤷‍♀️ its worth a shot to try!

Have you explored maybe making a deal with a shop or a cafe where they can sell your flowers for you and they get a small percentage?

Yes, you really do just need to push through. But ultimately diversification is key, if roadside is so seasonal.

Don't give up on a place after one day. I know from my own experience that when I spot something I like as I drive past that I can plan to stop next time. As long as people know when you'll be somewhere they can plan ahead and leave a few minutes earlier in order to stop conveniently. That said, I never find that roadside sales are worth it in time and energy. For me, I find it so much more energy efficient to sell only to florists and not bother with public sales, even if you get less per bunch. It is so much easier to plan ahead, and to take time off.

Hi Rowan! We kind of feel like the smell of all the car fumes is a bigger issue in this spot. We aren't sure. Yes! We would like to do less roadside sales! It is helping get our name out there for now though! Thanks for your comment :)

RU-vid channel Can’t Eat the Grass, as has been mentioned already, seems like a parallel business to yours. They have videos on their business plan…may be helpful. It’s certainly not an easy journey…hard work and long hours but keep your eyes on the benefits. Also Flowerhill Farm channel is another that might be encouraging to look at. I’m enjoying all you share especially as I know your area very well as my grandparents came from where you are. All very interesting. Marg

I am hoping for your success !! Your plate is full with kids and all. You know you have a very good design eye and a good partner so it seems as if you will figure it out. My honesty stand is working fine but it is on a farm road near town and people do actually stroll by. After a lifetime of selling face to face I love weeding nearby while folks leave money in the lockbox or Venmo. My needs and expectations are low as my kids are grown.

I wonder if winter is a slower season for selling? It's very slow for me here during winter and the height of summer as well. Stick with it and don't give up!! You guys are awesome. 😊

Good point, car fumes are not good AT ALL. Hang in there, it takes time to get a business noticed, maybe stick with the farmers market when it's open, the ones over here shut down in either Oct-Nov. Have you seen any videos on the channel you can't eat the grass.?

The great thing about around here is all the farmers markets run all year!! We have been thinking about going back, but not sure yet. Yes I watch You Can't Eat the Grass! Love them!!
