Finding Colorado Crystals and Minerals - Goethite

Colorado Goethite is some of the best in the world. Often it is found in the same location with other Crystals such as Quartz and Fluorite. Flowering Sprays and pillars resembling stacked coins are features common with Goethite. But I have never seen specimens glisten like highly polished metal the likes of which I find here in Colorado.

Would you be willing to give some pointers on where to look for these? Like signs to watch for, areas to consider, ect. I know it's a lot to ask, so I understand if you would rather not share. I live in south central Colorado and am a rock nerd and a half, lol! LOVE our Colorado geology!

Would you be willing to give some pointers on where I might seek to find some of these specimens? Not your location, but what to look for, what types of areas to look/dig in. I live in south central Colorado. I know it's a lot to ask. So I understand if you would rather not share. =)

Well I can't give you the exact location of this dig, but I will try to help you out with your questions. Although I have found Goethite in El Paso, Park, and Teller counties, I have never been able to find it while specifically prospecting for this mineral. I have always found it in association with the other items I was looking for, like crystals. In other words if I find good pockets of crystals occasionally there might be Goethite in the pocket as well. Unlike prospecting for crystals, which often can be found using the surface material to predict crystal locations, I know of no key indicators a person might see on the surface to suggest Goethite is near by. So look for crystals and dig out everything. Who knows, you might stumble onto some Goethite along the way.

Goethite, this is the first I've known of Goethite. Thank you for sharing the beauty and the knowledge.

You might be more familiar with a different form of Goethite.... Hematite is in this family. if you were to break a piece of Botryoidal Hematite and look into it, you would likely see a pattern of striations.

@@ColoradoGhostCreek thank you, now I know what to look for. So far my adventures have been focused on creeks. Until your and other RU-vid channels got my attention, I had not thought about the wonderful things in the earth, (under the soil, clay, rocks). When the weather suits me... I will be going up the creek. Hunting geodes and fossils. Thanks for the information.
