Finding Common Ground: A Louisiana Documentary

Louisiana’s struggle to restore Louisiana’s Mississippi River Delta has resulted in a new Master Plan that embraces new advances in scientific knowledge- new tools for rebuilding the coast. Local, traditional ecological knowledge can also be a tool for cost saving planning.
Finding Common Ground uses documentary film techniques to show how all those impacted by coastal erosion can cross over out of their silos, overcome long term psychological barriers, and achieve new understanding that may fast track restoration projects to build much needed new ground.

A thoughtful compendium of perspectives that gradually assembles an understanding of the coastal system and its dynamics in a way that rather emulates the facilitated natural processes of assembly and restored functionality of the system itself. Really quite brilliant!

As someone who has never been to Louisiana and only recently decided to look into the state's Coastal Master Plan, this was a great way to learn about different opinions and stakes involved. Thank you for the great documentary that respects science but also shows how scientists are susceptible to "silo"ing themselves from other groups. I love the inclusion of art in this. That was a great way to share the story - just like the actor states, stories (through the art of e.g. filmmaking) are the common ground. The comment he makes about impermanence is SO relevant and may be a big-picture item that scientists forget to keep in mind as they focus on their specific questions.

What about growing vetivert grass? It is known to stop erosion with its complex root system and is suitable for the climate, it has been used for years in the past dried for various reasons and has many uses, one of which is to keep soil from eroding!

Good documentary. But the big Elephant in the room is not mentioned - sea level rise.

Good point but around the 7 minute mark it is discussed

How about actual subsidence of the land and erosion which is more than sea level rising.

The fresh water diversion killed the marsh? Dumbest statement ever said out loud.

If there's no solution at the present then let's take the actual knowledge here and sit with it instead of demanding action and solutions. Louisiana has been in a state of constant flux since the Miocene, the biggest impacts being huge deposit of sediments during the last glacial impact, melting of ice and the warming of the earth, and the redirection of the rivers from east to west - to north to south. Turn of the century is when the engineers began rerouting the missisissippi and red rivers without any thought to the needs of sediment deposit in certain areas - i think it's pretty clear it's had a huge impact - look where the state has GROWN land .... it coincides with redirection.

@@NickleJ Many of these people, especially the older ones, also speak French. That is why it is a little sad not to hear it spoken as it once once. About 40 years ago, many more folks spoke French but unfortunately, it was transmitted to the children and the language was lost. That is probably what Antoine meant.

@@simonledoux8519 Maybe I replied the wrong person? Maybe they actually do speak french in the documentary? Idk what my question was. I'm a south LA native and my mother's family grew up speaking it. They're from Ville Platte where, according to my grandfather, cajun french was the dominant language when he was coming up.

Thanks for the tip about the 15 minute mark. Since it’s about all of Louisiana, and I had managed to miss the 15 min. folks, I thought it strange that there were so many white people.
