If he calls dmc4 a bad sequel i will find him go up to him and point my finger very angerly at him, lets just hope it dose not come to this extreme situation.
The reason DMC 2 sucked was because, only 4 months prior to its release Hideaki Itsuno was put in charge. Prior to that the game only had a rough narrative , and some design elements. Hideaki Itsuno salvaged the trash fire in 4 months, making the game remotely playable. He pushed out the game to meet the release date, so he could make DMC 3. The game fundamentally sucks but for 4 months of work, its functional
The original unknown director literally only had one move done by the time Itsuno took over, we're lucky the game is playable at all because of Itsuno.
Personally, I found the boss rush to be fun. Going from getting destroyed by Cerberus and unlocking easy mode, to destroying HIM without getting hit once was one of the best feelings ever, same with all the other bosses. And while the story isn't perfect, I still thnk its good. It's simple, but its effective and the final fight with Vergil is still my favourite final boss of any game ever. The build-up, the stage, the music, the fight itself, the final cutscene... Man, I just love DMC 3 so much
@Mr. Ultimate All modes in the vanilla NA release are one level higher than the JP release and all versions of SE with the exception of DMD which is the same in all versions. NA Easy=JP/SE Normal, NA Normal=JP/SE Hard. NA Hard had no equivalent in the JP version and was labelled Very Hard in SE. Throw in that Vanilla only had Yellow orb mode and the NA version was fucking brutal.
DMC1 probably has the best atmosphere out of the first three, with the third being a very close second. That's the reason why I play it. The Gothic architecture, the dreariness, the foreboding nature of just about every single area. Not to mention the flavour text given throughout the game really give the castle and even the island a sense of malice and antiquity. It's brilliant.
It’s like one of the few things about DMC2 I actually like, it’s a very Dante thing to do. It’s part of the showmanship, he doesn’t leave helping someone to chance. It’s a bunch of dramatics that hide an actual soft heart, and if there’s one thing further DMC games should take note of from this game it’s the small moments like that.
My first DMC was 3 which came out when I was 12 lol I remember when the special edition came out and my mind was blown when I saw you could play as Vergil.
DMC 3 holds a special place in my heart since my brother and I played it on our PS2 all the time. Definitely my favorite part was finding out you could play co op via the Doppleganger (I think that’s what it’s called) ability! I think you could also co-op on the bossfight where you ally with Vergil
Yes, Vergil can be controlled by a partner in mission 19. (I kinda wish that play style was an unlockable style at least in bloody palace, also why no DT?)
i disagree about boss in dmc1 all of them is my favorite boss in the series except mundus and nero angelo is how dmc all about, they show how you need to learn from them atk/block/dodge from boss is really fun to learn how to fight, that the reason dmc1 is really fun
According to this guy, I'm some kind of god because I beat og DMC1 on DMD when I was 11 1 year after it released and beat OG DMC3 with fucking GUNSLINGER on Normal my first time through. Basically all of the difficulty in DMC comes from learning the enemies attacks. Once you know them all, the only question is how much do you want to risk safety for stylishness.
This is one of my biggest frustrations with RU-vidrs and people who play games in general. There IS a difference between remasters and remakes that should be adressed. Remasters are simply porting the game to a newer system with some higher res textures and some bug fixes (or more bugs if it's a bad one.) Remakes are from the ground up rebuilt versions of older games that require much more money and time. Remasters are imo essential to game preservation as well as bringing series to newer players who don't own those consoles. Remakes, while holding their own place, are ultimately unnecessary most of the time.
I like your video, however I do think devil may cry 3 story was my favorite story of all time from the dmc games and from videogames to even movies, about Dante become more human progressivly through the game and being more like his father, Sparda, while also having to face and defeat his brother Vergil and Arkham being the main villain the father of lady and her defeating him. It felt like a story not just about family, but facing your family, while also being enjoyable and fun and not overly complicated. It felt like my favorite story of all time, but that's just my opinion.
Devil May Cry was never really an integral part of my life but I had DMC3, and I never finished it, but I enjoyed the action a lot, even though I wasn't very good with it (I mainly play RPGs). I really, really am tempted to get the new DMC though.
Get the HD Collection and start on easy for your first game except DMC1. Let's you get to terms with the combat and how the game works in general. I started with DMC3 but was no good at it, years later I got DMC4SE and played through it on Human (Easy) then Devil Hunter (Normal) and worked my way up. It's a good series and they're all worth playing.
Its a really weird thing to end on in 2019 with DMC V just around the corner, never mind counting DMC 4. Like yea, it could just be referring to be big mess of DmC and 4 being unfinished etc but still
I've only completed a few games in my life and DMC3 was one of them. However, your analysis was spot on. It was right after I graduated Highschool so I had the time and the will to learn and enjoy. I've never had the same experience since. Mainly I don't care for being forced into other chars mid story as I feel it doesn't let me naturally ride that learning curve with a char to experiment.
19:23 Checking the red pillar with writing on it (on the left side of the screen) gives you a pretty good hint about that puzzle- 'One with a soul of steel need not fear the abyss' or some such. Of course, it isn't immediately obvious that you can read that note.
"And he can only carry one weapon at a time" you can actually switch weapons by pressing the right stick. I assume you haven't even touched the right stick since you don't even talk about taunting in DMC1. Or in DMC at all. Which is what makes it a completely different experience from the likes of other action games. There's so much more to DMC1 than "oh yeah there's like this combo and this combo and this combo", it's about being stylish against opponents that tower you and your puny health bar. Playing on DMD is what any real fan of the franchise should at least try, because it really makes you think about what you're doing and how you're doing it. Taunting isn't only useful for style but it also restores DT gauge in DMC1. It seems to me that you only scratched the surface of what DMC really is. It doesn't remove any of your personal enjoyment of the game, but it definitely misrepresents the game itself. Except DMC2, that shit's poopoo.
@@KBash I'm pretty sure that it has been a thing since the original PS2 release lol Still it doesn't really matter, because it's not a quick switch like in DMC3/DMC4, but it plays a small animation of Dante switching to Ifrit/Alastor(or the sword he's using). It's faster than going in the menu and swapping your weapon out, but it puts you at risk of getting hit
@@KBash I don't think you mentioned Round Trip at all either but it's pretty useless unless you know how to weapon switch. You can only switch between Alastor and Ifrit and Round Trip allows for the only weapon switch combo. Also like other games DMC 2 can be fun if you don't cheese it. I know guns are powerful but there's enough there to have fun with. Things like Aerial Rave, Gunslinger, and Trickster started there. Gunslinger is equal to SwordMaster, it's just not as easy to combo with guns. The addition of a third weapon slot would have made it a lot easier to. Not saying you should be locked at six weapons but you should be able to select three guns if you want.
@@M7S4I5L8V2A I honestly don't get the rampant hate against DMC 2. No, it's not like the first game. And I like it for not being like the first. I love the first, it's my favorite in the series directly followed by 3, but DMC 2 is by no means a terrible game. It's a bit clunky, and can be cheesed all too easily, but if you actually put the smallest amount of effort into making it into a fun time it can definitely deliver.
"[2] is the perfect number of weapons for dante, change my mind." DMC5 lets you unlock the ability to carry all the weapons at once. You can set it up so it goes sword, not-sword, sword, not-sword, sword, not-sword. All the convenience of a 2 weapon loadout with all the options of a full loadout. You can even do like I did and form associations between a sword and a notsword to keep the order straight in your mind, i.e. Sparda and Balrog are kinda like DMC1 weapons, rebellion and cerberus are kinda like dmc3 weapons, DSD and cavaliere are the new hotness. Also gunslinger is dope except in 4 where it's a terrible joke.
9:20 can you at least explain why this Nero Angelo fight is so obnoxious and annoying? Using big words with out explaining what you mean by them, nice. To me it's a perfectly fair fight well telegraphed and cool, except the camera that switches so much that it killed me once, and the glitch you mentioned, but casual players aren't going to know about that
he not like kinda of this boss for sure, he say again at vergil boss fight, for me both nero angelo and vergil boss fight is really fun to play with and that iconic boss type in dmc series
Fire Rath In the original DMC American release, normal mode was the hard mode in the Japanese release. Where Dante did less damage and the enemies dealt 250% more.
@@firerath So I looked it up, and apparently the enemies in the North American version of the original DMC1 did 20% more damage on every difficulty compared to the Japanese version. Since the HD rereleases were graphical updates of the Japanese versions, translated to English for North America, the HD version is easier than the original in North America. So that, combined with the DMC3 difficulty changes, is probably what led to the confusion in the video.
what surprises me is that people not using wall hike in trickster more at all and was made redundant in DMC 4.. are you kidding me? using wall hike to dodge enemies and black flipping off a wall and using helm breaker on the same enemies who are now below you was stylish af! specially on the first level in Dante's office in DMC 3..
I don't remember DMC1 being that hard on the ps2. 12y/o me didn't bother with DMD because i couldn't carry over my blue and purple orbs, weapons and skills, but hard was fine since you could carry on from normal (oh mission select, why couldn't you exist back then).
You can carry all your stuff to DMD, atleast in the HDC. It's not worth it though, playing through on normal about five more times and getting all the items again is a better idea.
You could continue in DMD with your health and DT in the ps2 version, I wouldn't have been able to beat it otherwise. Hits from puppets are a whole life bar. AccountingNightmare's DMD run is legendary BECAUSE she starts from scratch. Hardly anyone did that.
Yo the part whenDante and Virgil fight together put the biggest grin on my face and in my head is one of the best moments I've experienced in gaming, especially when it's topped off with the incredible cutscene after where they trade swords and say jackpot together. It was fan service for sure, but hell it was so good.
Hey KBash This Is The First Video I Have Ever Watch From You. I Agreed With You On Most Things You Said But Not All. The Things I Disagree With Is Dante and The Story. DMC 1 Story Was Bail Bonds But The Game Didn't Focus On It. It Give Us Characters Back stories and Motive It Wasn't Great But So Wasn't A Lot Of Games Back Then. DMC 2 Story Is Not Good For A Main Game But For A Side Game It Could Have Been A Great Backstory For His Dad or The War. DMC 3 Story I Love It How Dante and Vergil Interest Together and How Lady and Her Dad Falls In Line With The Story Is Amazing and To Me The Game Doesn't Makes Me Hate Vergil It Make Me Love Him For The Challenge and The Personality and Dante. I Don't Really Think No Fans Thinks He Was A Crazy Badass Character In The First 2 Games He Was A Little In The First One But Not Really In The Second One and Plus DMC 1 Was A New IP Then They Didn't Know How He Was Going To Tune Out and It's Not Like It Came Out Of Nowhere. Like He Was Some Kind Of Angry Half God In The First Game Then The Couple Of Games After That He Was A Calm Dad and The Game Being Hard Is Not A Bad Thing It Give You The Tools You Need So Use Them.
Although it did suck that the boss fight in Devil May Cry 3 with Arkham took away the skill button (which took out the majority of the moves I needed to fight competently at the time), it turned into my favorite boss fight when me and my brothers found out that a second controller can control vergil when you press the start button. Sure the camera focused only on Dante, but our little minds where blown away when we found out we could actually fight this boss together.
I feel royal guard is way easier to get used to when you realize you can combine the jump invincibility frames with the air block thus giving you a bigger marging of error than the regular royal guard block gives.
I had so much fun with Devil May Cry three one and a little bit of four that I was so happy that they announce Devil May Cry 5 actually being a thing. The demo was a lot of fun.
I know you said you prefer Alastor, but if you use Ifrit Griffon and Nightmare become easier/more entertaining to fight. In particular you can parry the stab attack from Nightmare if you have Ifrits rolling blaze
Honestly there's an argument to be made that DMC2 is a great achievement of Hideaki Itsuno, because the fact that the game is as playable and functional as it is is a fucking miracle, given the development history
I dont know about the original dmc release but in the ps3 hdc, you do technically carry 2 weapons. If you have either ifrit or alistor, you can press r3 and it does a wepon switch by doing an animation between the two. It doesnt work with the other weapons
"I can't figure out why you'd ever bother" Well, I can tell you. It's one word: Style. DMC1 may not have been designed with it in mind, but DMC is flashy at it's core. It's about doing absolutely *everything* you can and being the craziest motherfucker on screen while you do it. If you can, you can juggle those mother fuckers all in the air and SSS them up before anyone touches the ground. The pistols help with that. With well-timed presses and switches, you can have them all in the air in a beautiful buttjuggle. Like I said, DMC 1 wasn't designed with this in mind. But that could be a reason as to why someone would do it. It definitely is in latter installments, i.e; 4, the one I played most.
Yeah exactly. Although honestly I always thought of ebony and ivory in DMC as the equivalent as the 'manual' in the Tony Hawk games, something to keep your combo going when closing distance on an enemy with the penalty of doing it too long affects the score multiplier. Devil May Cry is an arcade game about player expression, so when someone says "I can't figure out why you'd ever bother" or "This is boring", chances are the game is only boring since you are playing in boring way. You get out what you put in.
Dang man. Dmc1 remaster was a struggle for me. I can’t believe how much harder the ps2 version is. Dmc 2-4 were a cake walk compared to even dmc1 remastered. At least that how it was for me.
@@sebastiancintron29 I love dmc 4. It has my favorite combat out of the whole series but I would still argue that dmc 3 was the best one. Dmc2 is honestly garbage I agree.
You should try out Ghost Rider for PS2, I've never played DMC but it's pretty much a DMC game made as a movie tie-in and it's pretty damn good, all things considered.
Devil May Cry 1 doesn't have nearly the amount of depth that the later games do in their respective combo systems, but I still found a lot of potential fun if you take the time to dig in. Like with Alastor, one of my most used "player concocted" combos I ended up using was transitioning from the usual 3 hit combo to the Million Stab, and then while the demon was staggered from "making them swiss cheese", I'd use that to pull off a Round Trip throw. If I was feeling zesty at that point I'd pepper them with shots from Ebony and Ivory just for fun. Or if I was equipped with one of the guns that inflicted heavy knockback (i.e. any of the firearms that weren't Ebony and Ivory), finish it off with by blasting the demon in question with the shotgun or something. Another one I had fun using was starting the basic 4 hit combo with Ifrit, transitioning into a Magma Drive uppercut, and then while the demon was in mid-air, once again pelting them with rounds from Ebony and Ivory, and then once they came back down to the ground, finishing it off with a Kick 13 (still not entirely sure why it's called that. I initially thought maybe that the form Dante took when spinning around sort of resembled a 13 but that just didn't make any sense). It was a lot of fun to utilize the freedom the first game gave you for Dante's moveset and craft your own combos once you gained a more intermediate understanding of the moves you had at your disposal. It was somewhat held back by lack of an ability to swap weapons on the fly like the later games gave you (mainly guns since the ability to swap Devil Arms at will by clicking the analog stick was there), but they had to start somewhere.
My first experience of this series was DMC2 and I'm honestly surprised I love this game this much after that, tbf I was like 4 when I saw my dad playing it but still
The original PS2 DMC wasn't harder on normal in the west, iirc, that was 3. And even in the HD collection, you still "go back to the beginning of a mission" when you die, which is why the gold orbs are a thing: They're your lives, basically.
@singular on1 To my memory, yeah, It's been a while since I played the original on its hardware, but I'm confident that it worked the same way there that it did in the HD Collection. No gameplay changes were made to it, beyond the wider POV.
@@OneDoomedGameCritic DMC1 was harder in North America than in Japan. Enemies did 20% more damage on every difficulty, and since the HD rereleases use the Japanese versions as a base, the HD version in North America is easier than the original. However, it was only DMC3 where the North American normal was the Japanese hard, and the North American hard was a difficulty all its own.
i had the special edition of DCM3 on the ps2 and i loved it my dad watched me play it and was surprised how far i could get without wanting to read anything and just hit buttons and honestly its one of my favorite dcm games to this day and i love replaying it idk how i beat it but hey POGGERS
10:45 Also the team switched over completely, and the people behind the first game weren't even initially aware of the sequel being worked on in the first place.
Can someone tell this man that gunslinger in DMC3 is the most damaging style besides royal guard along with amazing crowd control making DMD mode actually pretty manageable? Not to mention the gunslinger only crazy combos
@@yakuzashibe I'm aware of the translation error, but I had also assumed that the others had just gotten used to it by now and, if the name is ever brought up again, will stick with the mistranslated name. In any case, I still highly prefer using Nero Angelo.
Yeah, I'm that one guy who started out on DMC2 >.< I will admit that that it has a lot of problems though, but I do think it gets overly hated at times, personally, I consider it better than the first game, but that's likely only because of nostalgia for the game that got me into the franchise
It's not that devs forgot what made DMC great when they made DMC2. It's that DMC2 had different devs altogether. If I remember correctly, the director the first DMC didn't even know DMC2 was being made until it was in the localization stage.
Please, I wish. But I need to grow my channel and those games just won't do it. On my life when I can actually spread those games with raw numbers I'll do it
Throwback to 10 year old me beating the game without knowing devil trigger was even a thing and missing half of the weapons without realizing it. Ah, the good times.
I played dmc3 on ps2 waay back and while I do agree that the punishing aspect of restarting the mission if you die was a bit harsh but it also raised the stakes. I recently tried the remake on a emulator and was a bit shocked on how much that game trivialities items, on the original version there was no shame using items the first time around while learning the mechanics and behavior of bosses because of the punishing aspect of dying. In the remake they might as well remove items all together because the game practically rewards you from dying with how it maxes out your hp without any consequences. If you enter a boss fight without max hp just let yourself get killed and there you go, in the same way easy mode was a good way to help with the learning curve of a game with punishing and meaningful deaths instead is reduced to kink shaming the player for not being good enough.
What about DMC3: Special Edition (ps2)? Is that one harder than the vanilla version of 3 on the ps2? I'm crashing through the Ninja Gaiden games (xbox and ps3) and need another challenge. Oh and by crashing I mean those games are using my head as a battering ram. Or a better analogy is a punching bag. That scene in your review of MGS Rizing with Raiden pounding the abs of the boss is like what these games are doing to my brain. (I gotta stop playing them on Master Ninja difficulty...)
Hey KBash! big fan of yours, love your videos..I was wondering what the process is for you when making a video? both creative and technical..also great video!
beat dmc 1-3 when I was 8-10, it was a lot of fun, though mostly on easy and normal, hard and very hard on DMC3, my fav dmc, if only there is a on the fly style change system it would have been perfect
I didn't know you were actually supposed to fight Phantom (the spider boss) in the first DMC the second time. I just got clobbered when I tried so on my next life I just ran into one of the side rooms and came back out. He despawns.
The opening scene of dmc 3 just makes me wish Dante had a armblade devil arm with a modified counter attack based moveset while using royal guard style.
That moment with dante and Virgil was one of the most memorable for me. Tbh to me it sounds like you are into a game more for the action than the plot. You also spam which is why trickster and gunslinger are to much for you. I get that it's your opinion but a lot of them were riddled with a personal bias of the game. The story lacks continuity that's evident. But at the end of dmc3 when I beat virgil It definitely hit the feels especially when they fought side by side
I recently did another playthrough of dmc 3 on switch and I decided to really dedicate some time to learning royal guard. Needless to say I got it to level 3 before any other style. Its the shit
devil may cry 3 was my first DMC game... I didn't play 1 and 2, but this video showed me that Devil May Cry 2 had the concept of where you are forced to play 2 characters..
Caught dmc 5 on sale and got the hd collection all for pretty much the price of one game I’m excited to be playing this series I’ve been playing through all of Yakuza and am almost done so having a new series to go through leaves me very excited (they’re still downloading as I type this)
10:38 Loved your review of DMC1. A couple of things were incorrect: 1) if you died mid-mission in the original and had a yellow orb, you would respawn right before the room/battle you died at, and wouldn't be forced to replay the entire mission as you state and 2) the 250% damage screenshot you showed at 2:12 refers to Hard mode, not to the HD edition. I feel the HD edition is inferior. It looks ugly. Higher resolution does not equal nicer graphics, nor more beautiful imagery. What's next? Someone's gonna stretch the original Sonic sprite to 4K? Thanks for the review!
I can only wonder what will be heard about 4. And I know you'll be right about everything, although the gameplay is excellent. O ye, DmC was a thing. Time to beat the dead horse again! Edit: Gunslinger is WAAAY better then you might think. Though most of my enjoyment with it came from style switching mod in the PC version.
@@SufferDYT Swordmaster is the easiest to learn the game with. Once you start using style switching from Sword to RG and to everything else, the game opens up like crazy. But yea swordmaster is scrub mode.
DMC 1 : Clear it more than 10 times. DMC 2 : Clear it once... Just once.. DMC 3 : Clear it more than 30 times. DMC 4 : 10 times plus. DMC : Just 2 times.
