Finding gemstones in Namibia 💎[S5 - Eps. 51]

In this episode I am riding from Walvis Bay to Spitzkoppe. On the way, I ride through a town called Swakopmund, but the famous Namibian morning fog prevents me from seeing much! My goal was to see the Spitzkoppe mountains anyway, and admire the beautiful gemstones that are found in these rocks!

The Mohs hardness scale put to use. I'll be when Noraly was studying in her first geology class on "rocks and minerals" she never thought she'd onw day be in Namibia scratching topaz on a broken beer bottle... Geology can lead its students to fascinating experiences. Some enlightened faculty should award her an honorary PhD for being such a great representative of the science.

Shaking the car is a popular South African strategy to get more fuel in. Tanks have an air-lock to allow for expansion when fuel heats up. Not a good idea when you park it in the sun afterwards, but ideal when traveling in areas where fuel stops are far apart.

Of course, with an EV, all these issues disappear. Same with electric bikes. Noraly's driven a Zero. Find a place to stay, charge overnight while you sleep, and you don't even need to look for a petrol station. Of course, getting certain things fixed in the middle of a place like Namibia might present some issues.

I really enjoyed the exploration at the mineral table. The prices of these gemstones sure change by the time they make it all the way to my local gem shop in upstate NY. 😄 I especially liked the aquamarine piece you chose. And again, the drone footage with the perfect music - wowowow! Fascinating geology lesson at the two mountains. I wonder where all of that soil went over the eons? I guess it went whichever way the wind blew or water flowed.

Noraly, you just escaped in time out of South Africa, hell has broken loose there, read the news sites, looting in Joburg and several other cities & towns. Namibia is quiet....continue the geological lessons; love it....

Wow! You stayed in a 5 star tent in the middle of nowhere. I love how excited you get when you go off the tarmac onto dirt trails. These videos are really amazing and you’re bringing parts of the world to people who may never have the opportunity to travel out of their neighborhood let alone travel to Africa and beyond. Thank you and safe travels.👍👍🇨🇦

If you are ever back in the Swakopmund area, take a trip to the Goanakontes Oasis in the Moon Valley. The first Englishman to live in the area camped there around 1847, he & his friends moved on after lions visited their camp one evening. It is also the site where the mineral boltwoodite has been found. Not a mineral you would want to take across borders due to its uranium content!

"This can't be done" says them. Noraly doesn't know about that and does it in that charming way of hers. best attitude ever. Ignore naysayers telling you what you can't do. They know zip about your abilities, zilch about your experience and nada about you.

I learned years ago about bouncing the back bumper when feuling up when the tank was in the back. Now all I have driven since then are trucks and vans and rockng them sideways will always get you 1-2 more gallons ( yes, gallons) ( 'cause thats how we measure it here in the U.S.). A fellow engineer at Fords told me the tanks always have room for an air pocket when full to allow for heat expansion. But, If you are starting off on a long drive , you will use up fuel right away and replace it with air , since the tanks are vented thru the gas cap. That guy at the gas station with the white truck knows the trick!!!
