In this episode of Solomon's Vegas Adventures, Solomon and Eyubed explored the Morning Star Mine, an abandoned mine located in Mojave National Preserve, an hour south of Las Vegas. Solomon and Eyubed found Gold, Baryte, Chalcopyrite, Amazonite, and other cool minerals at this mine.
The Morning Star Mine was an open-pit mine that was operational until 1993. The extraction of the gold ore was done via heap leaching with cyanide, and a tailing pond filled with the toxic soup can be seen at the bottom of the mine. Toxic waste is still being dispelled from the mine via piping, and the cyanide is present both in a large tarp-covered pool and in the bottom of the pit. The mine was forced to close due to a litany of environmental law violations. Mojave National Preserve was established in 1994, a year after the mine's closure, and the site was cleaned up.
The Geology of the Morning Star Mine is interesting. The gold exists in lode deposit form, along with Silver, Copper, and Bismuth, and is hosted both in granite and in rhyolite (or finer-grained granite) along a detachment fault. There is also Dioritic-Gabbroic veins present in the mine. Hydrothermal mineralization also seemed to have taken place, as Chalcopyrite and Baryte was found and documented during our expedition. Furthermore, much of the gold ore exists as very small, almost invisible specks within the granite/rhyolite. We did find some larger veins and some aggregates with more visible gold.
The mine site is administered by the National Park Service, and getting to the mine is quite simple. There is a dirt road that goes right to the mine, and it's not difficult to drive up. We were able to make it in my car, which is not a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle by any means. The only caution about the road is that there is a portion of sandy conditions, and getting stuck there could be a real possibility. As is customary with all National Park expeditions, please do not take any rocks or anything you find there. Pictures are fine, but specimens must stay. Respect the land and enjoy the site and scenery.

The water in the pit most likely does not have any cyanide in it and there for is not poisonous !

Many happy memories here ,my grandfather John Jordan Jr.,ran this mine and company tons of gold came out of that mine ,sadly the 87 crash really screwed up operations, and the mine never really reached its full potential, he chose the site because it was across the street from the first operations.Thank you so much for this video been along time since I've seen the ol mine, side note theres an old miner buried in front of the main office,no joke they found a skeleton in a old miners hut when they first explored the site.

My parents were shareholders and helped the geologist, Jerry, with claims. Jerry owned the town of Nipton. I was a kid, but I remember running around there too, at a shareholders day. This was before they blew the top off the mountain, and made it a pit mine. I got to take a tour in the tunnel, and see gold and pyrite. Its been a lot of years, but I’m glad to see it again through video. I remember the acid pit on the left, and I remember the offices and equipment just past that left pit.

@@ElonMuckX small world right?! I remember my dad getting driven home a busted mess before they blasted that pit, they had to hand dig and remove each California Cactus before blasting, he took a nasty fall down the side of that mountain lucky he didn't get killed.Rip Jerry

The natural pit in the excavation has no chemicals at all, that is jus the natural water table. The bubbles are from algae growth on the bottom that were disturbed when you tossed the rock in. The black tarped pit also has no cyanide at all. cyanide is destroyed in UV light, and the other heavy minerals oxidize away into inert state. I wouldn't drink a lot of that water, but it would not harm you unless you drank it daily for years.

yes, it should be stocked with catfish, there is nothing toxic about it at all. it's simply the natural water table.

It's not a mess, and if the gov stopped creating problems and shutting down progress, then this mine would still be producing jobs and minerals necessary for the safety and security of this nation. EPA needs to be abolished asap,

NOT poison at all. 24hrs of UV light breaks down cyanide.
