Finding MORE GOLD in the illegal ground sluice!

Part 2 of cleaning and removing the illegal ground sluice. I had to hire some muscle for this one to remove those large rocks. But under the large rocks was more large gold. Including one really nice nugget.

Dan, you said you “hope I earned your subscription”. You earned it when you said you HIRED your son to help you clear out that old sluice. My dad got heavily into gold panning and sluicing in the early 80s and co-opted me as his teenaged muscle. I vividly remember spending hours shoveling literal tons of gravel and sand, hauling endless buckets of water and dumping them into the sluice, and, always, freezing my ass off in the frigid North Saskatchewan River. Thanks for not taking your son’s labour for granted. ;-). Lance in Canada

I bet he even made you buy your own food, pay rent, and buy your own birthday presents. Kidding aside, I don't understand the mindset, today, where fathers (and mothers) should work endlessly for the whole family, but the fruit of the kids' labor isn't also shared. This seems to me to be part of the reason parents now have to have some collateral investment for retirement. If you have children, your retirement should be as secure as you taught your children to make it.

I was spending a “fun” day with a goofy uncle & my dad panning in the 70s when I accidentally discovered an antique piece of barbed wire sticking out of the ground. My uncle made hundreds on the barbed wire, which we spent 3 days pulling up once we knew what it was. I got a $20 finders fee, but none of the promised pay for the original panning or for the hard labor. Can you tell I’m still salty? 😉

Anybody who has a history of watching Dan's videos knows two things: 1) he can run a sluice faster than recommended and STILL capture all of the gold. and 2) he's panned the upper gravels for nothing before, so he knows the gold is on the bottom. So yeah, they shouldn't complain and instead learn, otherwise they're just trying to waste his time!

Dan, something that I do might help you in the future: I always carry a small, tough but lightweight ratchet strap when 'sploring the streambeds. Loop the strap around the small to medium bolder to be moved (NO Monsters!), continue with one or two more wraps and then fasten the other end to a solid tree or rock. (Sometimes I use one or two 3 or 4 meter lengths of 1/2" nylon rope too). Tighten the ratchet until the rig is pretty snug, go to the middle of the strap and moderately lift it. The mechanical advantage is high and if the strap is wrapped around the 'mover' then it will scoot it a little or even roll it. Loosen the ratchet, take out the slack, click it 2 or 3 times and repeat. Not stressful, light and very easy on the back, legs and the 'ole recirculating blood pumper. It might take a few minutes but lying in the streambed gasping for air, exhausted and unable to move will burn up a LOT more time. Remember - the pyramids weren't built in a day. :~) Good to see you out and about! - Joe S - (from the old GPEX)

Dan, those particles are examples of technogenic gold where the gold particles over time bond with iron oxides often formed by oxidising pyrites ,breaking down and liberating the sulphur to leave the fe and au . As the old timers use to say gold rides an iron horse.

People like to examine their buds to see what the quality is like with them but it's great for carrying it around with you because it's only 30x26x16mm. “An illegal ground sluice built by the old timers”. Isn’t pretty much everything they built now illegal in BC? Lol
@royjohnson465
@royjohnson465 2 года назад
Dart Mart ~A tiny in-river sluice, 2" inch dredge, 'or' small ground sluice is illegal (not legal) in BC "but" then as a huge hypocritical double-standard the BC government legally allows the logging of massive areas clear cutting trees on mountain & hill sides, allows jade miners & large mining companies to blast &/or dig large massive holes hauling mineral materials with rock trucks, 'and also' the BC government legally allows storm sewer drains from the streets of Victoria, BC to drain directly into the ocean untreated (not treated) that I do know for 100% sure from first hand but I was also told that this cities sewer is also drained into the ocean. Along with other towns and cities in BC dumping their sewer directly or indirectly into the ocean, rivers, and into (under) ground water with so called 'treated sewer'. Also allows 'agricultural' pesticide & herbicide chemicals into the ground water. BC government legally allows big environmental alterations and damage done by big companies and cities (& towns) 'BUT THEN' steps-on a small time artisanal hand gold miner-prospector as the evil big polluter enemy as a scapegoat is a pathetic joke. A hypocritical double-standard like I said before!

The strange gold could be rock or electrum, could be a more silver rich deposit, it has sort of this kind of color, but i bet it could be other alloys as well, probably mostly gold but electrum and other natural alloys does kind of look like that in terms of color.

Who ever put those grates in went through a lot of trouble, I'm figuring that must have been a real hot spot at one time and they pulled some good nuggets. The question is did it wash down from the hill side or come down the river?
@royjohnson465
@royjohnson465 2 года назад
53philp ~A lot of trouble is right, yes, pouring concrete and all. But using iron riffles is not wise because of rust, should have used aluminum or zinc dredge riffles. But maybe in old times before this came out. Riffles can be made out of round wood dowels with waterproof stain 'or' with round stainless steel threaded rod. I bought some corrosion proof strong 'composite material' for making house decks. Looks like plastic but much stronger, it could be made into riffles.

@aardque
@aardque 2 года назад
@@royjohnson465 The decking is not corrosion proof, only resistant. The post consumer content is subject to the same degradation as wood. It is not stronger, at all, the lack of fibers and lignin make for a clay like consistency, that has surface rigidity, but little resistance to bending. The material is suitable for decking, if the spans are moderate and cladding for abrasion, like bumpers, because the surface rigidity and lack of fibers mean that loads will be distributed evenly through the medium, with minimal surface damage.

Hey Dan I feel like you've been doing this for a while and I've seen you pull some pretty decent sized gold nuggets, but what do u do with them? Do you save them until you have enough to smelt into bars? Or just save it as is? And what do u think is a round about estimate of how much gold you've panned or found over ur gold panning "career" or hobby if u will
@jakejohnson4607
@jakejohnson4607 2 года назад
@Lassi Kinnunen 81 it depends on the grade or karts
@joesinakandid528
@joesinakandid528 2 года назад
@@jakejohnson4607 Actually, Jake, you are not exactly correct there. Size, Shape, Inclusion of Matrix (host rock) and other individual characteristics affect the selling price of individual Gold nuggets beyond just the Gold's weight and fineness (purity). For example a nugget's shape that can suggest a stylized heart usually sells quickly while a characterless blob sells slower and for a little less money. Some collectors pay a premium for "Craggie" Gold and others like some or a lot of matrix and others like just a single lump of Gold. Very small pieces of Gold are often just sold for the pure Gold's value - realizing that all natural Gold is a variable alloy of Silver and Copper as well. A nugget's selling price is all in the eye of the beholder, realizing that there is, of course, a basic value just for the Gold itself. - Joe -
@joesinakandid528
@joesinakandid528 2 года назад
@Lassi Kinnunen 81 Lassi, collectors often pay a substantial premium (extra $) for a larger sized nugget - in excess of just the Gold's value. The vast majority of Gold found is in very small pieces and so when a larger specimen is found then the uniqueness of that size makes the nugget more value to the collector.

It's silent, you can't see it from more than ferw yards away....doesnt impede travel of fish , kick up sediment or anything.....sounds green to me.
