Transcendental meditation. David Lynch talks a lot about it. I'm musician and it helped me. Hearing you talking about being self-indulgent reminded me him. With this I've learned to be 50% and observer and 50% a good listener to myself. I know your approach might be different but go and listen to his technique. It's going to take time but my intuition is you have to appreciate and love to listen to him because there is something magical in the fascination you have for a creative phenomenon I can't tell more. The magic has to happen by itself. Cheers Martin.
I love that you were transparent with your struggle on the first portrait, but came back and crushed the second portrait. Also I think part of finding your style is just being patient, as long as youre creating, it will inevitably come. And even when I feel like I have a style, I’m wondering what my art will look like next! Anywho, awesome video!
So true Aiah! I definitely think my style will evolve throughout my life as my interests and inspirations change. And that is so exciting to think about!
Could you maybe do a video (or a ig story) about what supplies you use, which brushes and how you clean them and your palette, I think it would be very helpful!(: Btw I looooove your videos they are so calming and inspiring
Exactly! You can draw or paint something 10 times, the last time isn't gonna be your best work every time. I agree, keep practicing and collecting photos of art, you'll automatically be drawn to certain styles, colors and textures. And of course all of this will change over time, because so are we. I like the calming cinematic music! Keep creating and inspiring people 🎨✌
YESSS after a day without a valentine's and no gifts, I felt like this video just wished me a happy valentine's, gave me chocolate, sang me a song and pat my back, ash's videos just feel like therapy at this point, so happy to have u in my life rn
I just signed up for your newsletter. I was very impressed by the difference between the first and second painting! Your honesty about the difficulty you had with the first painting is very refreshing. All the best from The Netherlands 🇳🇱
not going to lie I clicked on your video because i thought you were cut but i actually found some meaning and i genuinely enjoy your videos. I been watching couple past few videos you uploaded. Thank you lmao
I have watched many of your videos in the past 3 days. I have learned so much! Thank you for sharing the artist that you are and the skills that you have!💕
I am 69 going into 70. And am traveling very similar path to you. I am grateful to you for posting your process, your challenges and successes. You have progressed so much. Your work gets better and better. Stay fluid. So sweet.
hi ashleigh , i know i am too late but it is okay . i really enjoyed watching your calming video . you always motivate me to sketch and paint you are a aesthetic , lucky to have you 🤍🤍🌸🌸
That was GREAT job on stretch and then to redo a canvas due to your base coat of geso and second canvas definitely made a big difference. Your layering of colors also was good to observe as you blended colors. And brush applications also. I saw how you worked in areas to get your shadow areas. And angles faces for me are also challenges for me and I too continue to find my style for faces portraits. Seeing your perspective s encouraged me to not give up on portrait s . As I had put painting faces on back burner for later time. But seeing how you worked on yours gave me inspiration to scetch also. I need to make scetching practice again. Thank you for your video your painting came out beautiful and awesome! I am sure he will love it for his display.
As an artist myself girl I get what you mean and all of the self criticism that we give ourselves! It is easy to compare ourselves to others or even doubt our creativity! I’m here to tell you that you are doing amazing and your art is and will always be ever evolving. You are doing amazing. Be kind to yourself 🧡💛💛 love your content and your growth 👍🏽
I'm a Brazilian fan. I love to draw and I usually just do it with pencils, black and gray portraits. I recently started experimenting with colored pencils and your painting videos helped me a lot. Your videos are inspiring, keep up the good work.
I loved watching you find your art style! I really enjoyed how open and honest you were about the first portrait. You continue to inspire me every day❤️
You can't imagine how much I've been waiting for your videos! I feel like I've lost my creativity in the field of art for a long time and will never be able to paint again and when I get so depressed, I come and watch your videos over and over. I hope I can watch five hundred and fifty more of your videos eheheh... Thank you so much for sharing your art journey, it may sound weird but I love you like you're my best friend
that’s what my sis did at her lowest point in life and two years later, it’s changed her for the better for her, better therapy then therapists she’s hooked
This video is so fantastic. I love the music, your hair looks great, and as a self taught artist I really appreciate the honesty and struggle that you showed. All your insights from the first painting are spot on and the second one is honestly fantastic. I'm jealous of how quick you were able to apply what you learned and turn out an awesome piece of art.
Thank you Ashleigh King, your sharing is wonderful. You are answering the right question that I am having trouble with. It's hard to find my own art style, I often look at other people's artwork. But that did not satisfy me, because I wanted to find a very personal art style for me.
So happy to hear it was helpful! I think finding those style qualities in many different artworks and incorporating them into your own will help. Wishing you the best
@@AshleighKing lol just laughing st the face 👀 but don’t you think hey can do better with these 🤡🤑🤧😈🙂🙃🔥? like maybe they can move around or something at the least.. anyway nice work! and Yadira, just start and have fun it’s interesting how over time look back (cause you might not notice though other might) and see more. This how I learn, never school in anything but this need to explore and learn since I’ve always been sort of an outcast/loner yet I’m never bored the way I see it, we have everything we need [besides the obvious color, tools and what not] some aim beginners mind when arting but if your a beginner should you have advanced kind? i have no clue what I said above 👁 👀 who cares you know..people get to philosophical at times if you have passion for something you’ll do it for free and if your not sure which way to go do something you’d do for nothing an advice given to me by a good friend which i found to be tru for me specially now with everything going on art neutralizes all that and hope to rise above it best
Hi Ashleigh I’m an artist too and I noticed in your video your choice of music on Spotify, I added it to my playlist. It is great to listen to while painting.Love your videos.:)
Great insight and very inspiring. Sometimes following artists can be overwhelming but your video was very insightful, inspirational and honest. Thank You for sharing.
Another great video! So many insights, and hope that even though progress is not linear, we can become even better even if we "fail" at certain point. I love the pacing of the video, and the music, as always. I believe that your editing skills are awesome, and give the proper dreamy calm vibe to your content.
Been really inspired by all your videos Ashleigh! Keep up the amazing content. It’s really cool how your painting and art translates to your video and editing style. I really dig it! God bless!

I was excited by the title of this video because I'm currently experimenting to find my own painting style! I loved your tip about creating a Pinterest board and noticing what all of the art that inspires you has in common. On my way to do it on Insta now! :) By the way, love your style and I am also attempting to learn some of the techniques you've shown here!
Ohhh noooo 😭 it's 2 am rn in my country and it seems like I won't be able to watch your video!!!!!! I'll wake up early tomorrow and will be back for sure ✨ btw the thumbnail is super pretty

I actually liked your "failed" painting. I get how it wasn't too fun to be painting on an un-gesso-ed board, but the likeness looked good, despite the awkwardness of the pose. I liked the second painting too, and it looked like you captured the mood from the moment in it too. I wonder how a second try from the first pose might have felt for you using the gesso-ed board. Also, the Pinterest style inspo idea's a great suggestion.
Oh wow thanks so much! It did have qualities that I liked, I will admit. Hmm it would hopefully go better, I think the additional gesso made a huge difference. Maybe I’ll give it another go!
Hey Ashleigh, you make great videos. One thing to consider………’trying’ to develop a style is probably not the way to approach it. The easiest way to develop an authentic style (and thus avoid derivative work), is to keep putting the hours in. After 5-10 years of deep work, your style will emerge. Most successful artists will tell you they tried many different styles and ultimately gave up on others styles and turned inward to find their own way. This is very tough to do but hard work pays off! Good luck and god bless!
Thanks for your suggestion, Axle! We can agree to disagree about this haha, but I think we're saying pretty similar things. I just choose to develop my style in a more intentional way (setting goals for my artwork, implementing qualities that I find intriguing, noticing color palettes that I'm drawn to). This is especially helpful early on when I have not yet had the chance to create 5-10 years of deep work. I think all artists create derivative work to some extent. We all find inspiration from our surroundings, other artworks, or established styles. Nothing is truly original anymore. When artists turn inward to find their own style it is basically a combination of all their style inspirations and experiences. Which is totally natural and a great thing! But I understand where you are coming from. I know my style will evolve on its own over the years and that is an exciting thing to think about! Thanks again for your insight!
Hey Ashleigh, thank you for taking the time to respond. Yes that is all I was suggesting, to not worry too much about whether or not a style is emerging, but just focus on working. Using different styles intentionally and experimenting with new palettes is fantastic (do that myself all the time). You seem so dedicated so I think you will definitely create original work. Don’t listen to those who tell you nothing is original or it’s all been done. Anyone who says that has not put in a decade of work. The years will go by and you will see that you can’t help but be original. This is just one idea but the way I have found best to find your “Artistic eye” is to do a painting and then right afterwards put it away and paint it again with no references. By doing this you have to dig deep into your visual memory. This is where the originality comes in as you are no longer copying but extracting from your own imagination. Most people resist this process as the result is often messy and chaotic. But if you can handle it, over time I have found that you can generate more and more design detail with no reference. Eventually I started being able to create whole environments for my figure to live in (all from imagination). The weirdest thing was that this seemed to help when I went back to painting from life or reference. I did not have to look at the reference as much as I could fill in the gaps in my imagination. I think you will find the more you can work from imagination the more an individual style will emerge. This is why I said 5-10 years as it takes that long to build up the anatomical/ spatial memory. You have a great soul, I can tell you love painting and the ethereal aspects of life. Your videos match up well with the aura you give off. This in itself is original!! Keep up the amazing process videos Ashleigh!. 🙏god bless
Also, you are a lefty!!! Lefties usually find originality much easier than right handed people. I teach art to my family and I have them draw Upside down & left handed to maximally engage the right brain (spatial) and silence the left brain (executive). Works amazingly well:) 😉
I'm an old artist. Found my style a long time ago. You'll find yours too. I have a little tip. You want to keep the viewer viewing as long as you can. You don't want them to just glance at your work and say, "That's nice." You want them to Glance, Question, Look, Talk and Share. Put a little different into it. You can do this while you are learning and really catch attention. Do it good enough and that is all you will ever need to know no matter what your skill level.
