Hey everyone!
So I'm in the process of finding even better colors for my MK85 Iron Man suit and i decided to record some of the process and methods! It's a little glimpse of the work that goes into testing and finding the right combination of colors.
Many of you ask me what colors i use, how to use them, what layers and methods to use and so on. I get that you want the answers; trust me we all do! But i really just want to show you the steps you'll need to go through when on the hunt for the best color that works for YOU!

I don't know much about kustom canz(I'm gonna try out myself once I have the time) but based on other videos I saw I believe the candy deep red one gets darker as you put on more coat and you can control the darkness of the red based on the number of coats you put on. Maybe I'm wrong who knows. Great video Mr. Frank :) I love your work and thank you for introducing me to this crazy hobby that seems so fun and exciting. Keep up the good work and excited to see how your starboost turns out!

Frank, take your toy to the auto paint store and have them color match it. They will give an exact match . Have them put it in spray cans for you

For those of us not in America, who are frustrated that Rustoleum have discontinued the 'Automotive Metallic Red' (why Rustoleum, why?), a suitable alternative I've found is Hycote Citroen Wicked Red Metallic (double acrylic). I even sprayed this over the Rustoleum, partly coated because I ran out in the middle of the job. I behaves well with the Montana Chrome base and takes a good acrylic lacquer.

the best way to use primer is aply a thin coat of blak that way wen you sand the blak show all the imperfection .i paint for almost 20 years for exibits motorcycles

Okay, I am running a Kobra Max and SV 03 to do a Mark 45. I mean... who cares that building Ironman suits is a whole hobby within the hobby and now I have fuck tons to learn about LED's and motorizing shit. This video is a guide for ordering paint... lol. I will be GAWT DAMMED before I finish a 5 day print and have the color suck.

I am so glad you are from the UK, it's almost impossible to find people in the UK recommending paints. I always assumed you were US due to your accent. I'm making a Rescue Armour in red, so I'm definitely going to use that Candy Ruby. I've just binge watched a load of your videos.

Good vid Frank, this helps a lot to understand the work behind the process. I got my gold faceplate spray paint from Aldi in the UK, still trying to get a red I am happy with for the mk 3

I think the gold on your damaged helmet is the best gold for mk85 The red from the movie looks like a dark cherry red to me but thats all just about perception

Perfect colors . It was very helpful especially for the red candy method. Now I wonder ..you have many throwaways helmets for tests. What if you give one as a gift :) For me that I'm still trying with Eva foam :/ My goal is the mk85 bust from queens studio. With foam but metalics on foam.. I know already will fail . I'm seriously for the gift or even to pay if you have one even broken ready for the garbage.

Graphite powders can work over black to add some sick metallics to. Most people use it for a mando type chrome, but as an undercoat it can add some pop. I’m sure there’s other equivalents for golds.

Hi Frank. Love your stuff. You've inspired me. Printed my first MK50 helmet. Smoothed, grey primed, gloss black first coat. Problem: i'm using that Montana Black Chrome Gold, it looks amazing, but it goes on thick, it takes an age to dry and it's really soft. My challenge now is how to coat it without losing the shine. Have you any ideas for finishing this gold?

Try a darker metallic base then your red it will darken it and keep the metallic look

Isn’t the actual suit color an anodized finish? You did try candy apple red over a silver base? You need to go further towards pearl finishes than metallic finishes. There are fake anodized rattle cans too tgat spray over a silver or chrome base. There are actual mirror chrome rattle cans online now aswell which is what you need to be using as a base for all three main colorways! I know i could nail that Hot Toys finish perfectly!

Hey Frank quick question. So that specific clear coat brand (Kustom Canz 2k) worked on that gold spray paint even though it says they don’t recommend it? Thats the gold spray I used but I was afraid of clear coating it.

You should have an airbrush and compressor! You can mix and mess with the paints! You should be looking in the Lacquer paints that can be cleared with high gloss finishes. With an airbrush the spray is 10x finer than a rattle can tip. Get a gravity fed with throttle control. You can add flex coat into them so they can flex and won’t chip or flake easy. As a custom painter who does graphics and custom cars lacquers will lay a thin mirror finish unlike enamels and Acrylics. Just a tip!

Try a black base with the custom canz candy red that you have. The lighter (silver base) is why it turned purple, using a white base will turn it pink. I would try it with a flat, semi gloss, and a high gloss black. All of which will give you different shades

I think the montana metallic Red with a coat of that candy deep Red over the montana one would get you closer to the color, because that kind of purple mixed with that kind of red orange would get you to the color... Maybe Haha

Are you going to find a different gun metal for your suit? In the videos, it looks like a matte dark gray with a clear coat over it. I'm not sure how it looks in person

@@FranklyBuilt I'm going to buy the paints that you used and do some experiments to see if I can spray the red and gold over graphite rub. In the red of the Mark 85, there is a pattern that I'm guessing is the nanobots that I'm going to try to get. Watch Tony's death scene and you can see it in the light when it shows his hand on his arc reactor. I'm thinking if I kind of checker a gloss white and either a gloss black or a silver under the graphite rub if I can get that. I'll let you know how that goes

I wouldn’t do any of that over graphite. Find a gunmetal or grey; I highly highly doubt graphite will take to this paint at all

@@FranklyBuilt Probably not but it's worth a shot. I'll try it on some plastic spoons. I could try clear-coating the graphite finish and then paint over it.

Great video, I'm a new subscriber and I'm so impressed with what I see and alot of your ideas I will be going back over my MK4 suit to implement them. One thing I want to ask about paint is have you considered vinyl wrap? I work for a wrapping company and alot of these colours are in a our range 🤔 if these could be applied to the suits and helmets then matching the colours would be even easier 👍🏼

Hey so yeah vinyl would work in some areas but it just doesn’t have the same depth and clarity as a good paint job IMO. Also wrapping helmets would be a nightmareeeee

Hi!! I want to use the Montana Gold Goldchrome but the company says they do not recommend using that spray paint on things will get handled a lot because the paint is very prone to finger marks and rubbing off. Have you experienced this with the montana gold goldchrome or Montana Black Goldchrome??

My problem with my own colour of gold on a suit I built is that it’s very VERY yellow instead of a more bronze gold that the mk42 has And I live in the UK so I’m gonna be checking these paints out
