Funny how similar a lot of our experiences are. I bought a 100 watt JCM 900 as my first upgrade from my beginner/solid state Peavey and Fender amps. It was also a 4x12 and WAY too much for what I needed. Next was a Vox AC 10 and then a Fender Deluxe Reverb 68 reissue. I've been very happy with the Vox/Fender either in combination or as solo amps since then. I absolutely agree that you should buy used when you can, but ask a lot of questions and if things sound too good to be true they probably are. Thanks for these great videos Rhett.

Also, play multiple copies of the amp you decide you want to buy! I played 4 or 5 Princeton 65 reissues and one sounded way better that the others and had a much lower noise floor.

My FIRST amps were little crappy fender front man 15s. a bass one and then a guitar one. But since then I got a Vox VT20 modeler, a Fender Princeton Reverb with a 12inch Cannabis Rex speaker and covered in tweed, and a Marshal DSL 40cr. I guess i got the three main catagories covered. though a proper Vox would be a nice upgrade. the VT20 does a decent job modeling the AC sounds. That one has actually been passed down to my 7 year old son lol.

It just dawned on me why your channel stands out my friend. You mix in your own riffs and runs that you like to play with bursts of some familiar tunes that have gotten air play over the years. It makes the tones so much more relatable. From a guitar player’s perspective I feel more like I am trying out the gear. There are other popular RU-vid channels that feature so much incessant noodling that actually hearing the tone becomes impossible. Great job. Keep playing and I will keep on listening. Hope to catch you in Nashville next time you are there.

Some great sounding amps in this video - My first proper amp was a Laney GH100L with matching 4x12, and it was great - lovely clean tone that handles pedals (or multi FX since it was the 90s) really well, I still have it and it's great, but the 4x12 is at the back of a cupboard and almost never gets out these days. I've been really lucky to have owned a few other amps over the years which gives me a crazy number of options, but that old Laney is still going, just through a smaller cabinet these days.

My number one use of an effects loop these days is with a looper (like the Boss RC-3 for ex.). Without an effects loop, you're mostly limited to recording the guitar's dry sound. Any adjustments to tone, drive etc. will apply to both your recorded loop and whatever you're playing live over it. With the effects loop, you can alter your tones for rhythms and leads and so forth. Even if I didn't plan in using any pedals that might benefit from an effects loop I tend to want them for loopers, at least on any amp that I might find myself practicing through. For a live situation it's probably not too big a deal unless you've somehow come up with a tone that depends on it. My 2 pence. Great video!

I think the biggest problem is finding a store where you can actually try a couple of amps. One that has more than 4 or 5 student amps, because they cant afford to put anything in stock anymore, because a few online mega-stores with hardly any service or support, are destroying every actually accessable local store, where you can find professional attitude and proper service :(
@JohnPaulHare
@JohnPaulHare 4 года назад
The big thing about Vox-style amps is that they seem way freaking louder than the wattage at which they're rated. The AC15 in my backline will break up absolutely wonderfully, but the volume will easily surpass 100dB before the preamp breaks up if I crank up the master on it. Damn, do I love it, though. Best tone I could ask for in a band setting.

I really liked that you revisited this more in depth. I hate that most videos don't get into specs for beginners, lots of us guys are spec nerds and we wanna talk about the design etc. Oh but why no Orange love? He kept avoiding Orange lol. I think Orange amps sound great on their own but are harder to place well in a mix. And Marshalls, Vox and even Fender (just not as easily for the Fender due to less mids) are voiced perfectly for a band setting but the settings will have to change to sound as good on their own. But they all work just fine in either situation with a little practice. Anyways just my opinion.

Sticking with my Lab Series L5's. They have the best clean sounds and take pedals really well. Best amps ever. Just ask Allan Holdsworth, BB King, Ty from Kings X etc. Their jazz tone is as bell-like as possible but you have to have the original CTK speakers. I found an L5 with Peavey black widows in it and replaced them with old 16ohm CTK's. Amazing difference. That being said, some of these amps will sound completely different with different speakers. It gets really complicated. For me it's simplified. I know a famous jazz player who also teaches at the U of Miami and he has FIVE L5's in his possession.
@martinaddison4880
@martinaddison4880 2 года назад
I saw Ty’s L5 BEFORE they announced it! It had black electrical tape over the L5 label. LOL! I asked the amp tech, isn’t that an L5 and you would have thought I was giving away national security secrets!
@martinaddison4880
@martinaddison4880 2 года назад
Do you mean CTS speakers? I have never heard of CTK - Ty Tabor used marshall cabs with his LAB when I saw him. Even the interviews mention he made the L5 into a head - he did not use the combo speakers.

I'm always searching for hidden gems. Stuff that's off the radar but may suprise me. Number of years ago I scored a vintage "Earth" G-1000 head and verticle factory Eminence loaded 2x15 cabinet with the funky spongy tolex (like Kustom) for $300. The schematic is a direct blackface twin reverb knock-off except for the tremolo circuit. Lesser quality components/transformers of course but man that thing sounds heavenly. And if I ever get stupid I could upgrade the transformers and start tweaking the components to higher tolerance; but really no need the thing sounds great as is - best $300 I dropped in a long time. Earth amps borrowed circuits and even cosmetics from successful companies like Fender and Peavey. They may be the same manufacturer as the later 70's "Plush" amps - not sure; but some models look identical.
