Hey Ryan, I've watched your channel since 2012. I was a young 14-year-old with a passion when I discovered you on my dad's iPad. You've guided me throughout my journey as a filmmaker- from making videos on my parents' home video camera, to high school DSLR short films with my best friends, and tomorrow I go into preproduction for my Thesis film at Florida State Film School. You've been with me through it all. I just wanted to say thank you for everything. You've taught me so much. I think it is because he/they care much more about fine tuning their skills rather than creating good stories. They definetely have the ability to make some epic movies if they chose. Instead they do action based short films.

@@audunystgaard I don't pretend to know his motivation for every short film, my point is that they have been doing this for ten years and have during that time focused solely on honing skills rather than making good films. Quality over story. Lots of shorts that look really great but otherwise uninteresting. If they wanted to make some good stories they could. They'd rather focus on techniques and tricks.

You had mentioned using location scouts......are they people you know (personally or by proxy) and/or have worked with? Or is there a website that offers scouting services based on the area one is looking to film?

I'd love to know what you mean by "very low budget" obviously it's usually relative especially compared to the vision/goal. But it would be killer to get an idea of the budgets for projects like this and Guest of Honor, including what the rental costs would be if the films weren't sponsored by gear brands.

From what I understand from my time watching filmriot. Low budget covers calling in favors from family and friends with budget mostly going towards catering amd necessary equipment. From the short snippet I saw of the shot script, I saw steady cam used every shot, so that means a gimbal stabilizer, lens and camera rental (probably just the lenses) and towards any practical effect. Chances are a since this is a 2 day shoot, looking at a couple thousand. If paying the actors, DP, gaffer, etc, probably closer to 10 thousand. But ryan and crew are family and tight knit friends, so chances are lots of people are doing this in their spare time and taking payment in the form of a good demo reel.

For me low budget is between 3000 and 5000 € for a feature

Question for whoever at Film Riot may or may not see this. You always cater to filmmakers with little to no budget. As you mentioned in the video, There Comes a Knocking is a lower budget film. What exactly is your budget for this film? I’m definitely a near no budget filmmaker and I’d love some perspective on what a project like this costs.

Ryan and I are following very similar paths at the moment. Hopefully mine can work out as well as his does. Ireland’s a strange place to shoot: some great parts like tax incentives and lots of high-end production like GoT, but very few rental houses and prop shops. A lot of time I find that what I want just can’t be got in Ireland. Hope the shoot went well, my next one’s shooting in November and it’s quite ambitious for the budget

So our Godfather of filmmaking is still not making features for Hollywood, Netflix, etc...I don't know if Hollywood/Netflix even know who good filmmakers really are! And yes, I wish from the bottom most part of my heart that, Ryan gets his feature to the big screen. Thanks Ryan for saving thousands of lives!

So excited for you Ryan! I have a question for the next time you have a Monday question day or maybe even bts questions for the making of TCAK. Over the years in making shorts films from Losses to Guest of Honor/Ballistic how much would you say you've listened to the fanbase community in seeing what worked and what didn't work and using that to prepare you for the big leagues? I think the thing I love most about Ryan is his ability to roll with the punches and his positive attitude when things don't go according to plan. 1) because I don't think things ever go according to plan and 2) that attitude is contagious and I'm sure it spreads to the rest of his crew. I've learned a lot from Ryan and Film Riot over the years, not just about film making, but about being a leader as well. Thanks!
