Notice several people saying you need to call 811, 811 will not locate powerlines from your barn to your house from your breaker box out to your front fence. They were only trace phone lines, Internet, line and main power underground line.
@@projectdiy873 It's because 811 is there to protect public utilities, not your private utilities. You have to hire a private utility locator for anything on private property.
Bunch of city people where everything is underground and on town water and gas and sewer most likely. 811 won't find the line from your propane tank to the house, and they won't find the pipe from your well to the house, and they won't find the pipe from the house to your septic tank, and they won't even look for the overhead lines because you can see them.
You are correct about the city not looking for wires in the back of your house. They already know where the utility lines are when they were first installed. That is all they are going to mark. Any work done post-original build, whether permitted or not, will not be flagged. They will go to the back if that's where the utility lines are 1st laid. Or if you're hiring a private co. to specifically check your property before a new project.
811 is cheaper than any unit you can buy. It also guarantees you that you are not liable for damages as long as you dig within the guidelines, which are pretty straight forward. Don't be the guy that caused the neighbors to be without gas, coms,or power because you located yourself... Oh and I didn't mention the fines.. they are steep enough to make you call 811 for a free locate next time
Good knowledge to have but people ALWAYS call 811, the service is free and in the event of damage to a service or communication line marked in the wrong place the repairs will be free. Not all underground will be marked since not everything underground is documented but will reduce the risk considerably ….
How can I find the 7200V line going to the distribution transformer? They don't believe it is where it is - I want to make sure. Can I detect the magnetic field?
How on earth do you find a " break" in the line? Anyine know? I found my wire no problems, but this tool is supposed to help fund a break/bleed in the line?!?!
I am not sure to be honest you could look up the item from the description on Amazon and see what it says. I have never tried to find just copper. Obviously electric wire is but has the current running through it to make it detect it.
Take note...The amazon link says that this will not work on stranded wire. have you been able to test this to be true? or was the wire you worked with not stranded?
It is important to note that in many states, calling 811 is a legal requirement before initiating any digging activities. By neglecting to make this call, you are not only violating the law yourself but also discouraging fellow homeowners from complying with this mandatory regulation.
Not calling for locates can get you a major fine in many places regardless if the utility is damaged or not. Try digging up a fiber optic line and see what happens. Not criticism, just warning you and viewer.
Exactly! I'm in the natural gas industry and showed up to an emergency a few months ago from a do it yourselfer.. He's lucky he didn't ignite it because it would of put him and his neighbors out for good before he could say oh shit. Call 811 it's free
@@chris21904 and if your in a rural area you can call all you want. Only thing they will look at like he said is up to the pole in your yard. And also like he stated the power is overhead. So they won't help at all.
Obviously you need to know something about your yard before just digging. He already knew what was in the ground just wanted to verify the location. This is great if you forgot the exact location of a wire you buried years ago!
You don’t call 811 you can go to jail. You need to have it documented and on record before you dig it’s the law . U tube should take this video down you hit a gas line it can be your life.
The line he's showing in this video would not get marked on an 811 dispatch. It's the line from his house to his detached garage. In most cases, the electric company's responsibility for locating lines stops at the meter. Anything you put in to an outbuilding, lamppost, etc. is up to you to find using whichever method you can. The video is good info and should stay.
You need to RU-vid “adding a sub panel to a detached building” because yours was installed incorrectly. 1st off you needed to pull 4 conductor. 2nd, the neutrals and equipment conductors need to be terminated on separate terminal bars and isolated from one another. Also, I don’t see a grounding electrode conductor headed to the two required ground rods……all this could be better explained in-depth from watching videos on here
811 does not locate all utilities on a property, ie power, gas will be marked up to meter. Anything after the meter, as is this power line, is not going to be located. It’s the responsibility of whoever dose the excavation. The guy in the video is 100% spot on
