I had no clue who this was until I was sitting in my photography class and a photo book of her work was in front of me by coincidence. I opened it and I almost cried just looking at her work. My teacher told me to watch this and I have never felt so breathless in my life. This is beautiful

I found myself crying off and on during this documentary. I wish I had been able to meet this woman. I feel richer after having watched this and would love to own a photo book of her work. It's amazing yet strange how every one of us has a story and at least one thing we do well and yet like her we are not appreciated until we are dead and gone. We must some how stop, tell a story to a stranger, and hear one of theirs and appreciate the similarities and differences between us. In doing this it's hard to have hatred or indifference in our hearts for other humans.

zoomanda BOOM - Well said. I just seen this on Netflix and have been contemplating watching it. Judging by the trailer, it looks amazing.

Mike S The movie is slow but it tells a good story for those who have patience, intellect and heart. Action/horror movies are great in their context but finding movies that tell the story of humanity and help us find our own is priceless. I did my ancestry tree and found that I was related to so many people I never knew including the British royal family (Princess Diana and now her sons) and now I look around where ever I go and wonder how many other distant cousins I have. Fact is each person knows they are related somehow to everyone and yet we hate and fight with each other like children. Borders, languages, cultures, and colors can separate us but it's ugly that we hate and kill each other as if "they" were an warring alien race looking to destroy earth. Looking at the pictures, she took shows people taken off guard in sometimes their most vulnerable of times, in pain, in sadness, in desperation, in happiness, in haughty aloofness and in seeing this we see the same things in ourselves. Viewing pictures can do this I believe, and maybe it can show that we are all the same under these "clothes" of skin we have. I hope you watch it and look deeper than just what the film shows.

Ugh. So sick of Gen Zzzzzzz'ers "crying" and "feeling richer," et al.

...riveting stuff. Vivian Maier buttresses the long-held theory that artists who subsist 'on the edge' (for whatever reason) are far more likely to produce exemplary works. We can only continue to guess what sort of torment powered her creativity. RIP, Ms. Maier, and thanks for the inspiration.

This was literally the cutest documentary I ever watched. So well made, she was such a wierdo, such a persona... Absolutely loved it, too bad Vivian didn't get the fame when she was alive.

This is a fascinating documentary about Vivian Maier , an odd woman , but a genius with a camera. When she died , her belongings went to auction , which included hundreds of thousands of negatives and boxes of undeveloped rolls of film . John Maloof , the director of this film started to discover , that these pictures where extraordinary and he set out to find what this woman , and her life , was all about. I enjoyed this a lot and you really have to see this film to see what a fantastic photographer of people she was. Finding Vivian Maier is nominated in the best documentary category in this years Oscar's. 7 out of 10

Wonderful shots. She knew how to make a snap of a complete stranger compelling, and that's a rare talent. Just enough intrusiveness to make em take notice with a genuine expression. It isn't so much what you see in her subjects either. You see how she must have approached them. With gentle cajoling.

Exceptional work and talent by a deeply private woman, what a miracle it was discovered and saved, thanks to the young man who purchased her body of work, now seen around the world, thank you Vivian for these photographic treasures.

Vivian Maier; the bar that all other street photographers must clear--and she didn't even know she was setting it.

I can somewhat understand why she would hide herself and her work. The first reason that came to mind is that to be innovative to a high degree you cannot be influenced by others. Another reason is that perhaps she had looked for acknowledgement and was rejected because her work was not appreciated; could have been an opinion from a family member or prospective employer. I expect that many people around the world hide their talent for these and other reasons, or don't have time for it because of commitment to family or need of work to survive. Another reason why Maier might have hidden her work, is perhaps she wasn't looking for acknowledgement or attention or fame, it may have been personal or a personal outlet and not intended for criticism.

*As an artist I'm glad I ran across this find. Whoever this dame was, she sure knew how to snap a great pic. I couldn't care if she was a complete harridan - her art is fantastic*

When I was living in Evanston, a 100 year old neighbor lady passed away and her grandkids came and threw out so much material. Antiques, ladies clothes from the 40s, everything. She also was a photographer. I'm sorry to say I didn't save any negatives but I hope somebody got them. They seemed to be stock photo street scenes from the 40s and 50s. My point is, what do you do when you find something like that?
@yoesiaputri3332

I was handed a box of negative 3 years back when one of my relative was renovating this one particular house. I was studying overseas and keeping my stuffs to limited amount is necessary, at least in my opinion, plus I had no idea what to do with the negatives. So, I left it in my apartment's recycle box. After I found out about this, I feel, numb and dumb. I remember checking few of those negatives, thought I could make something out of it, but never had the chance to do, never made the time for it.
@525Lines
@525Lines 9 лет назад
Yoesia Putri There's no real procedures for these kind of things and you just hope a collector can at least take care of them, assuming they're worth saving. A repository system that can channel things to collectors or recycling might be ideal but not every area has a local museum or a local history room in a public library.

Reminds me of the super nanny, “creative person” in the show she creatively helps families, “worst parts of town.” Umm like the worst parts of seeing the family struggles. “Generate this moment, then she’s gone.” Ok mostly a lil bit of Marry Poppins & or Nanny Mcfee.

Not really, because 99.9 times out of a hundred, that's what you end up with. Shit. This was remarkably good fortune because the guy not only recognised this work for what it was, but knew what to do with it. It could so easily have been thrown in the trash.

tryptychUK So many collectors end up alone and when they die their stuff gets dumped. Sometimes it's junk but often it's at least worth something among collectors.
