Carrie Lin will be discussing how she has coached individuals find work with disabilities. Carrie first explored this topic through a blog in 2014 with IBPF and will expand on this within her presentation.
Carrie Elizabeth Lin, MA, LPCC is a psychotherapist and career counselor in San Jose, California. She worked for many years in the field of vocational rehabilitation, helping people with disabilities determine a good career match, build confidence, and find employment or other meaningful activities. Diagnosed with bipolar I in 1999, she is now passionate about helping others with mental health disabilities reach their full potential. She is currently writing a memoir about her life with bipolar disorder.

Social service agencies can be a great place to work if you have disabilities, like I do, especially if the people really care. It’s definitely a good field to look for like-minded (or hearted) people. I work in Substance Use Disorder recovery systems, and also have bipolar disorder. I just recently learned, in my psychopharmacology class, that bipolar disorder and schizophrenia are a continuum. I didn’t realize they were so closely related they are, largely, the same disorder but it makes sense! My best friend in elementary school, my ex-husband, and my current all have schizophrenic disorders. Thank you for doing what you do! And for letting people know we CAN do it! ❤

This has helped a lot for me. I have BPD and CPTSD, I work part time in aged care. I was doing okay but then the work got a little more demanding and they weren't providing me with enough breaks for me to catch my breath. I have been in the aged care business for 9 years, but for some reason I've been struggling a lot more now.

I had to quit pest control after 30 yrs. Couldn't do Walmart cause the stress drive me into suicidal depression, then I blew out my back. I worked at a horse barn and loved it but they closed. I now work PT as a pizza driver and started a sewing business on the side. I really have to focus though to get things done.

I just recently graduated at nursing school. At the same time I start to feeling depressed and having hypomanic crisis. That lead me to loose my first job and having a lot of debts. I’m back home getting my treatment but I’m so scared I won’t be able to work as a nurse anymore :(

oh honey RN is way too demanding for bipolar. A less demanding and/or stressful job is mandatory. Maybe phlebotomy if you want to stay in medical. Not sure if I spelled it correctly, where you draw blood all day.

How cool! I’ve done theater and activism and once wrote a one act play about GLBT issues that was performed, did a cable show about that topic, and performed with an African American theater troupe. I love mixing art and social justice work. I have just been doing the latter, since I moved to a different area, and I’m glad to hear someone is still doing both. ❤. I’ve done a lot of teaching and am now in the counseling field, and I always offer students/clients the option to do a performance or art piece to demonstrate their learning or express feelings.

I hope people with BP would be more welcomed into work environments even better, without being harrassed. I'd like to find a job where my way of being would be accepted. I might look more bright and colourful sometimes and more inside myself at other times. That doesn't mean I'm in a bad mood when I'm more quiet and less expressive. When I feel that people accept me, just as I accept their difference, I become more confident and perform better. I used to be an overachiever, multitask and very quick learner. A famous artist once said that the best way to kill someone is to pay them for doing nothing (disability which I'm on). I volunteer and I like it but I feel like the most simple task requires more concentration then ever before. I somehow don't feel right and my cognitive capacities have lowered.

You sound like me! More and colorful sometimes; inside myself at other times. Well said! I also have bipolar disorder. Yes, I wish different ways of being were more accepted, as well. Most people don't understand how hard life can be for some of us. Also, growing up and undiagnosed, I could never understand how people could just go to work , and not flash out on somebody once in awhile. I am currently in the process of getting disability.

I'm bipolar and *want* to work. I haven't worked in while due to my illness and a series of unfortunate circumstances beyond my control(having to move to another state which I hate, having to accept charity from family who would rather I wasn't there, seeking work and, not getting it once it's discovered how long I've gone without work and and what my condition is-someone actually told me that's why they'd never consider me for hire). I'm tired...so damn tired. I need some resources that'll really help me have a chance to be self-sufficient. If anyone knows anything, please please get back to me. I'm an artist, and have training in massge(although I'm out of practice and probably need to retrain). Sitting around doing nothing is killing me....

Im currently in this boat. I have a degree in broadcasting but im only working at one job two days a week and its been hard. I had this discussion with my counselor today and we came up with this routine during the day called R&D (research and development). It's where while youre figuring out your work stuff you still take 2 to 3 hours a day to go out and network with fellow people who are into what youre into, taking free classes in your community or going to the library to read up on your interests that could get you back into work. I'm watching this video to get the jist of what I want my thing to be and how I'll be practicing R&D. I plan on starting the routine next week. It might be a short or long period of time, but itll get you out of the house and youll be working just on yourself and in a more liberating way. I hope this helps and best of luck :)

Same. I can't keep a single job or project, I just can't finish anything. I'm 26 and I feel useless. I'm in debt and stopped taking meds for BD. I just left my job at the local government because of my BD, feels worse bec my uncle is the head of the department. He was kind to tell me to rest and come back when I feel better. I didn't go back. I feel like I left him alone, and for more than a month I don't talk to him even when we live in the same house. 😔

I'm not sure that saying : "I have limitations. I would require some accomodations" would be welcomed in a majority of work environments. Also, if a doctor's report is needed, it would be signed by my psychiatrist because I don't have a family doctor anymore (I'm on a waiting list). I find that this could raise a red flag and that the HR and supervisors would become curious as to why there are limitations. I'm sure that would raise a question mark in their mind and they would try to know more. I am under the impression that they could abolish the position to dismiss such a person and protect themselves. We have a workers rights commission to protect employees. They were not able to take my case when I was harassed for more than a year. They told me that if I have not been working for at least 2 years for that employer, they could not help me. Proving that someone was dismissed on the basis of discrimination for a disability is hard to prove unless the meeting was recorded. Apparently, there are some companies who hire knowing upfront about a person's condition. At least the managers are aware of this and won't need to play detective to uncover the diagnosis. They would already know...

I've been out of work for months now. I suppose nobody wants a 50-something guy when a 20-something is cheaper and is not breaking down. I don't like dealing with people which makes it harder - employers now tend to combine customer service with clerical jobs. I really don't know what to do. My unemployment insurance is about to run out, I have no medical insurance, and the racing/suicidal thoughts are constant. Bipolar II, by the way. Not much mania, BAD depression.

I'm 40-something, nobody... I remember,,, I don't actually remember the time clearly any more,,, I was one time at this job interview for this warehouse job, and I overheard a guy who was there for the same job application process talking to the interviewer that he'd just had a suicide attempt. I never heard back from the company and I wondered what happened to the younger guy, was he hired? My limited understanding of depression would tell me that when the honest self-report of symptom is severe, a person wouldn't have the motivation for carrying out suicide. When a person is trying to get back up, the risk goes up. www.betterhelp.com/advice/personality-disorders/ideas-of-reference-definition-and-examples/ The catchy name, "bipolar" and associated behaviors themselves can create exaggerated confirmation bias. The guy is still something, for he likes to connects the dots in his own way. Ain't Got No, I Got Life - Nina Simone ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-L5jI9I03q8E.html ) Try not to go psychotic if you can avoid it.

To the speaker - the content was excellent but your tone and delivery seemed stiff and as if each sentence was a question. Also your personal anecdotes left me wondering how they applied to the content. Sorry to be so negative but I search out videos such as yours to help me with my BP. I feel exhausted from 40 minutes of straining to ignore each sentence sounding like a question. This is very valuable information but I will try another source.

You would claim "woman friendly work environment", I on the other hand would ask for reality, thanks. Hey, by the way, I've watched to the end. 😂 More means more, coming from her, I know what that means exactly!! Anyways, jobs like personal counselling could go obsolete in shorter time than you may think. Keep up the useless passion, everyone. Oh, and I would also discourage the disclosure unless one's in the business of political or fake virtue-signaling types. Do some cognitive training everyday! so that you won't be stuck in victim-mindset like regular women. A person who complains or campaigns about mental illness stigma doesn't seem to know her limitation of intellectual capacity. God, she's writing a memoir? All things being equal, Nothing is more, in life. Sorry about my shit-comment, I'd rather WAKE UP with Sam Harris, I'm that kinda person and so unemployable, bye.
