Have any of you ever found your "go-to" pipe tobacco? It is something I have sought for years, but it has always evaded me. After developing and refining my tastes for over a decade of smoking a pipe, I am beginning to have a clearer idea of what such a tobacco would consist of, for me. So I am embarking on what I refer to as an Odyssey, in an attempt to finally identify my go-to smoke. Please, feel free to join me on my journey, by suggesting blends that meet the description I give in this video.
May your pipes ensure that you have smoky days and briary nights!
Regards, Burn-A-Briar

I will join you in the endeavor. I’ve desired a simplistic approach to pipe smoking after acquiring quite a cellar in my exploration for preference. I’ve heard simplicity defined similarity to perfection where it’s not achieved when nothing more can be added, but when nothing more can be taken away. I too am seeking that go to blend, and it will be at that point I’ll have reached my perfect / most simplistic point of this hobby. Cheers, Alex

welcome back Brother. Love to hear the updates from you. Related to pipe tobacco, I love to enjoy early morning pipe and erinmore flake most of the time.

Those are two tobaccos that I have tried and enjoyed! It’s always interesting to hear if others have found a go to blend. All the best, Burn-A-Brair

I tended to have one favourite and stick with it. I first smoked a pipe at 16 and chose, somewhat randomly a blend called Four Square Yellow but quickly graduated to St. Bruno because a friend, a little older than me was smoking that; I stuck with it for years because I enjoyed it. The, because of a promotional event when I was at University I moved onto Punchbowle - a blend with Latakia, sadly no longer produced I remained faithful for a while, then Gold Block became my choice. Finally, Black Cherry Aromatic, stronger than one might imagine from its name and with the advantage that non smokers enjoy the aroma.

Thanks - I wish we could meet and share a bowl or two. The promotional event was a free dinner in a city centre hotel for the first 150 students to sign up (men only allowed!) After dinner when rather risqué jokes were aired - actually, plain filthy ones, we all lit our pipes with the free tobacco and were invited to fill our pouches with as much as we could, Can you imagine the scene... it could not happen today!

Go to a specific style or two. Get some blending components so you can turn any blend into something you like. Thats what I do.

That's a very interesting idea. Do you find that the individual components on the market for the public are of a good enough quality? The go-to style for me is an oriental forward 'English' with Cavendish added - what I referred to as a "Scott-balk" in the video. Thanks for the comment. Regards, Burn-A-Briar

@@BurnABriar-PipeSmoking I have not seen any on the market that I would suspect being of poor quality. The challenge will be in the blending. If you choose to go down this rabbit hole I would suggest getting some unflavored cavendish to add to “English/Balkan” blends, pinching in one bowl at a time to start. Then get some Turkish/Orientals to add in. I suspect there is one of these that has tickled your fancy and that may take some effort to find. My favorite is Katerini so far. If you want to start from scratch there are plenty of strait Virginias to choose from for the base of the blend. For the Latakia it should be easy, but for me it is not. I don’t like the Cyprian stuff, it has too much pine for me. I am hoping that the company in Turkey making “Latakia” that C&D uses will have some available soon. I hear Van Erkoms has some that is very good from Uganda. Anyhow this is far from finding a “go to” blend.

do you wear a flat cap outdoors? that outfit would look great with a flat cap.

Yes, I do sometimes. The outfit I was wearing was what I wore to work, minus the jacket and tie. In the colder months, I will wear a Harris Tweed cap when I am outdoors. All the best, Burn-A-Briar
