Longer VIDEO, breaking down how to decipher your guns particular wind number, so you can figure out how you should be analyzing wind, in a faster and more efficient manner.
Having a wind number allows you to start thinking in increments of a specific number to double or divide from, to decrease time between shots or before the wind changes because you are spending too long deciphering the perfect wind call.
Let me know if you want to see more white board break downs like this, or anything else in the future trying to make more relevant content for you guys.

Thank You for the excellent explanation! I've struggled trying to understand "gun number" but you explained it so well.

Awesome! I try to keep things as simple as possible, because it can very easily get complicated when trying to break down some of these topics.

Great lesson now I get it. Can you do some more examples of how to apply it to different wind speeds and distance distance. Thanks

Absolutely! Sorry for the delay, I will try to get around to it this weekend, work and life has been taking all my time first half of the year, things finally slowed down, so I am trying to play catch up with the content.

I would be interested to hear what technique you use, always looking for new ways to teach my students or even find a potentially better way to do something myself.. Would be awesome if you broke down your technique here in the comments if you wouldn’t mind.

Is this the same for MOA shooters? I’m new to precision shooting and my first scope is in MOA. I think I’ll be switching to MRAD once I get the money to get a new scope😅😅
@matthewsolo5162
@matthewsolo5162 Год назад
Yes it is, but you have to do it slightly different. Depending on the increments your scope adjusts per click for windage is the goal. For example if you have 1/2 minute clicks, then you wanna do this same process and find where you numbers line up so you can make the clicks match. Wind in mph - 100yd- 1 click - 1/2 minute 200yd - 2 clicks - 1 minute 300yd - 3 clicks - 1.5 minute Etc.. Let me know if that doesn’t help, I can break down again differently if needed.

Use MOA wind constant formula. Example M118LR at 2610 uses an MOA wind constant of 10 at 1000 yards so if you have a 5 mph cross wind the formula works out like this: 1000 yards divided by 100 equals 10 times 5 mph equals 50 divided by constant of 10 equals 5 MOA and that’s the adjustment you take on windage control or the hold you take on MOA scaled reticle. This is what USAMU teaches SDM students.

How do you get your rifle to shoots 175 grain 308 round to be 2700s fps? Mine is 24 inch 5 r barre and it only managed 168 smk federal god match 2635
@matthewsolo5162
@matthewsolo5162 9 месяцев назад
When i shoot 168 grain my FPS is around the same as yours. The bullet having 7 more grains is what is pushing that velocity up to the higher bracket.
@wi4203
@wi4203 8 месяцев назад
Not all loads are created equal. It may be that your using a slower burning powder or a suboptimal charge weight in your load. Try different ammo. AB39 out of my 22” barrel can be anywhere from 2630 to 2700 depending on the lot. Ultimately that extra 65fps isn’t going to make or break you for most applications anyway. Compare your data at mid range and I think you’ll be pleased to find that your probably no more than .2-.3 mil of difference between those two velocities at 500 meters.
@matthewsolo5162
@matthewsolo5162 8 месяцев назад
That is true, which is why we typically try to keep lots and sub lots together when running factory ammo. Since we do not have the luxury of controlling all the variables like a hand loader. Typically that helps with consistency from what I’ve seen.

it only works if you turn off real world effects (physics--spin drift).. you cant turn off physics when actually shooting. do the math with a 90 degree wind and its off with a 270 degree wind
@matthewsolo5162
@matthewsolo5162 6 месяцев назад
That is only half correct, find the gun number without your skin drift is how you find your wind number pure. If you know you have a right hand twist and a 270°/left to right wind, depending on your caliber/muzzle velocity you can determine when it changes for example. My 6.5 cm doesn’t become a .1 deviation until 500 yds which is 5cm which is 1.9 inches. Which isn’t significant enough for most people to outshoot. And again this is a guess so it won’t be perfect. Now if you had a left hand twist rifle this entire situation would be in reverse, so it’s important to know the details of your rifle & bullets performance to know when to make the accurate adjustment.
@mark-rk3pr
@mark-rk3pr 6 месяцев назад
it is 100% correct ..do the math at 90 degree wind and it does not work for 270 degree wind. your reply does not address what i am saying
@matthewsolo5162
@matthewsolo5162 6 месяцев назад
@mark-rk3pr nope you’re right I apologize, but in the video and written on the board I address in the video @2:38 turning off spin drift… If you keep spin drift on my previous reply references what spin drift adds. I should have read that more carefully the first time I apologize. Either way it’s a technique you don’t have to use it, if you have something better that works for you I’d love to hear it, always looking for new ways to do things. This technique works for me quite effectively so I have implemented and continued to use it for years.
@charlesludwig9173
@charlesludwig9173 11 месяцев назад
Gee, you’re making it too hard. Just use MOA wind constant for your loading. Example: for cartridge with MOA constant of 10 at distance, distance in yards divided by 100 times wind value in mph divided by constant.
@matthewsolo5162
@matthewsolo5162 11 месяцев назад
You are correct if you are using MOA, I use mils, so this is easier in my opinion. Also I think it just depends on what resonates with each person, honestly this makes more sense in my brain, and I have also trained to this for close to 10 years, not discounting your method, I've just never used that before so I don't have a good baseline for comparison.
