Finger Independence Exercise for Pianists

I don’t know the actual name for this exercise but when my teacher showed me this exercise , she mentioned that Chopin used this very exercise for his students. That’s why I call it the “Chopin block” a block of notes by chopin hehe.
This exercise really helped me understand how to balance arm weight and Voicing at a much deeper and nuanced level. I hope it helps you too!
Repeat each finger 4 times and do so slowly with control. I demonstrated quickly in order to fit everything into the time limit.
As a Disclaimer, please be very careful when using this exercise. Be mindful about keeping your wrist loose and your arms, elbow, and shoulders not tense. Exercises that require you to isolate and move one finger independently, can be dangerous. If you have a teacher, definitely work on this with them!
When using this exercise, the aim is a slow and controlled release of the keys. Really build your mind-to-body connection as well as the body-to-instrument connection. The notes do not have to be played loudly at all. In fact it’s better to play them softly to challenge your ability to control the key, your ability to listen, and also so that you don’t injure your hand. Moving your wrist in circles after each repetition will keep you mindful and release any tension.
I suggest staying on each level for 1 week before advancing to the next. You’ll only really need to practice it once each hand and you’ll immediately see improvement in just the first 2-3 days.

Can we do this exercise with both hands?

Not advised, because you lose focus with two hands. The goal of this exercise is not to train hands independence but fingers independence.
