This is absolutely my favourite practice video, i haven’t even begun following along and i can already tell the topics i need to improve and you explain thoroughly and more importantly in a way i can understand and how i can improve these grey areas, until now ive never watched a lesson and thought “hmm, you know maybe i can do this” but now i know i can get back onto my pad and after a rewatch of this ill be deep in the practice mindset, i 1000% reccomend this man ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

@BetterDrumming
@BetterDrumming 3 года назад
Great! Try and play a speed that you can play ‘even’ strokes hand to hand using fingers. Start around 100bpm and work up, focusing on evenness!
@hecbiz75
@hecbiz75 2 года назад
@@BetterDrumming You mean playing quarter notes (only one note per beat) at 100 BPM, right? 100 is fast even just playing quarter notes. I started playing drums less than 6 months ago. My top speed playing double strokes using the push/pull technique is 75 BPM playing 16th notes. And that's something I've practiced for a while.
@BetterDrumming
@BetterDrumming 2 года назад
Yes correct! Quarter notes at 100bpm. If that’s fast, reduce the speed to 80bpm or even 60bpm, focusing on control of the technique! :)

Another good tip is work out your forearms. To use your fingers in this motion is using your forearms and it’s also said that if you work out a muscle then the ability to learn something new with that muscle increases. There’s a vid on RU-vid specifically for workouts for drummers and how to hit the muscles that you ACTUALLY use while drumming and I highly recommend looking into it. But basically do a T-pose and do a fast grabbing motion with both hands constantly. Within 30 seconds you should feel it, and I’ve found having a stress ball or something like that in your hands while doing it increases the effectiveness.

I have 3 questions: How long did it take you to get to this level of finger technique efficiently? What about using bigger sticks for this exercise or maybe turn the stick and practice the blunt end? Left hand stick is creeping, will it go away with after awhile? Thank you for your video tutorial
@BetterDrumming
@BetterDrumming День назад
@@calvinpham5547 Thanks for your questions! I learned this technique years go, but if you’re consistent with practise you can definitely learn it in a few months! Bigger sticks can help as they are more forgiving, you can use them to help you get the feel for the technique, then use your normal sticks again. I haven’t tried using the blunt end before, I’ll have a go! Try slightly tightening the grip on your left hand to secure the stick from shifting! Hope this helps :)

@jeremiahmarkusmedia6915
@jeremiahmarkusmedia6915 3 года назад
This question is in regards to the third, fourth and fifth finger. After the stick rebounds are we suppose to keep the finger on the stick? My fulcrum stays intact, but third finger tends to drift away. Like I'm tapping a button. For example when dribbling a basketball, the hand inevitably looses contact with the ball with it hits the ground.
@BetterDrumming
@BetterDrumming 3 года назад
This is a great question! After the rebound the stick should move your finger back into place. If you’re holding the 3,4,5 fingers relaxed, the sticks should move your fingers for you. I usually aim to keep contact with the stick through the whole motion, otherwise I find you can get jerky motions with the stick rebounding into the finger if it has lost contact. Hope this helps!

Nice!! My only question, if you see this, is at the start it looks like you're closer to german grip whereas all the exercises focus on french grip... is there anything different you need to do when transitioning to german grip? I feel like it's harder because the stick hits the palm of my hand when I use the fingers in german, and it's also so hard not to use the wrist in german grip.
@BetterDrumming
@BetterDrumming Год назад
Thanks for watching! When I play the ride cymbal I mostly play in French grip, but you can definitely use finger technique in German grip, it’s a more into the palm technique though as you mentioned, best of luck and I hope this helps!

It looks like your thumb positioning changes from when you first introduce the strokes and from when you are using all of your fingers. I feel like my thumb is farther away from my hand than yours is.

Great point, my thumb is evenly spaced with my pointer finger when isolating that exercise, when I use all fingers my thumb is about halfway between the pointer and middle finger, almost making a small triangle between the 3. Hope this helps!

Do the fingers have to be in touch with the stick all the time?
@BetterDrumming
@BetterDrumming Месяц назад
When I play my fingers are in contact with the stick for roughly 90% of the motion, that last 10% or so is when the tip of the stick hits the drum head and for that small portion the bottom end of the stick loses contact with the fingers, then immediately bounces back to the fingers for the next stroke. Hope that helps!

Hi there! I've had lessons, watched videos, done exercises, and I can kind of do double strokes, but watching that scissor motion in your hands has inspired me to try this method. Don't know yet if I've found the holy grail, but surely something good will come out of it. Thanks a lot! 👍🤓 PS: for trad grip, could this technique work using thumb only?

Hi Hans, great to hear :) glad you’re feeling inspired! Absolutely this technique works in trad grip with the thumb. You can also turn your hand over and use both the middle and index fingers in trad grip too!

@@BetterDrumming Cheers Ryan! Weird thing is, my wrists are perfectly still when playing one hand at a time, but as soon as I alternate the strokes, the wrists start to move a bit. Gotta practise more. And for the trad grip exercise, I assume you mean the palm is upwards 🙂

Nice! The palm will be facing inwards, as if you were going to shake someone’s hand for the thumb strokes, that’s how I find it works best.
