This video covers how to finish your Tambour beaded pieces, and how to apply them to items, or stitch them into garments! There are loads of different ways to do this, so we're starting with outlining some of my favourite techniques, and I've got a few photos and clips of past work. The next time I actually have an appliqué or a garment to stitch together, I'll record it for you as well!

the way you're able to hand sew with such a delicate and infuriating fabric as silk organza is incredible! you are so talented!

You're an amazing teacher, your videos are amazing & your work is amazing! I have a couple adult coloring books & I found some great pattern ideas in them. I can't wait to use them when I try tambour embroidery!!

It would be really helpful to see how you draw the designs onto fabric? With pen? When it’s elaborate do you print it on, or do you just use the paper as part of the process? I have only just heard of this and I find it endlessly fascinating. I am wondering if it can be combined on or with crochet.. as I make tiny earrings and things. Adding sequins in this way I think would look far neater than glueing or sewing.

This has been an amazing series, thank you so much for sharing your experience! My question is if you can you mend the embroidery if a thread breaks on a finished piece?

In all my research silk organza is best because there’s no stretch

What about using Payette sequins? Do you still need to do the long stitch down so that they are all the same direction?

I only recently have finished my first post-classes tambour work - a curly sort of heraldic meets are nouveau floral shape to put on the front of a corset belt. My frame still had the plain cream organza from class on it, with on one half my practice squares (filled up with various patterns etc) and on the other half I did my thing. The belt I wanted it on was blue tho, and I didn't want it to have a white overlay (for that I had too little left anyway) so, on organza, I made an applique. I don't have fraycheck or gum arabic so anything like that but organza unravels like grazy, so I cut it out very grossly and then cutting out a few cm close to the edge - attaching it to the belt fabric with teeny tiny stitches. Cutting out 2 cm close to the edge - stitching. It actually unraveled from underneath my chain stitches in some spots (I had some tiny curls of like 4 mm wide) so then I also wove my thread (the same thread as what I worked with) through the applique. It ended up getting attached fully and looking decent, and won't have a lot of wear & tear being the front of a belt anyway, but next time I want to do an applique I will for sure weaponize myself with tule instead of easily unravenable organza, that the same color as the fabric I want it on so I don't have to cut it out right next to the chainstitches, and fraycheck or gum arabic.

I've just seen the photos you shared - it is so beautiful, but I can definitely see what you mean - it sounds like you have a really good plan for next time though, with the tulle and the fray check/gum arabic to stabilise things!

I'm wanting to make a dress replica of Sabrina Carpenter's iconic heart cut out dress. I want to use tambour embroidery for the heart beads, but I'm unsure of how to attach it to a silk, as tambouring directly onto silk seems like it'll snag really easily. Would maybe making an applique and hand sewing it on work best? Then hand sewing on some of the more scarce beads after?

I had to look this dress up, I'm clearly behind on the times 😅 - I don't see much tambour in her versions - they seem to be either sewn with a needle or (honestly in most cases) glued on crystals. There's no reason you couldn't use tambour instead though. In general yes- making an applique (on something like organza) would be easier than trying to do Tambour on the fashion fabric - and then yes, hand sewing some of the more scarce beads will work! You could also use some of those more scarce beads to hide the edge of your applique :)

I want to make a bridal head piece what would recommend I apply it on?
@katmakes

I'm not sure whether you mean what to do the embroidery on or what to attach the embroidery to once it's finished- Organza is the best base for Tambour since it's strong and sheer but if your headpiece has some complex edges, tulle might be better. If you're talking about what to apply the applique to, that depends on how much structure you want. My flapper headpieces are both done on a thin leather, but felt or even just satin fabric with the edges turned under could be good options depending on your design.

Hi, if I want to embroider a jean jacket, do I embroider on the jacket or do I embroider on organza en sew that on the jean jacket ?
@katmakes
@katmakes Месяц назад
It depends! Embroidering on organza separately and treating it as an applique is easier in a lot of ways - you don't have to worry about getting your jean jacket mounted/hooped during beading, and you'll be able to see the underneath hand, plus denim is a twill so it has some more directionality that may increase snagging. It's certainly possible to embroider directly on the jacket, which may be better if your design doesn't have as many solid edges to hide the edges of the organza with.
