Great videos, learned great deal, thanks for uploading it. What I would like to see the way you point brickwork, or lay bed (brickwork) with lime. What consistency ought the mortar be for laying bed and for pointing? This would be of immense help for me. What ratio would you use (1:2,5)? Which lime (2, 3.5, 5) would you recommend to use for certain works? For instance, would you go with NHL 2 or 3.5 on Edwardian house. What kind of lime to use for rendering and plastering of interior walls? I posted a lot of questions but sincerely hope to get some answers in your new video. Thank you.

It all depends what company supplies your lime I use Hanson's (castle ). I use a 1:3 ratio of NHL 3.5 I don't do rendering or plastering I only do traditional lime pointing

Glenn, I engaged in a discussion with another you tuber about the use on the churn brush. He says it has only been done since the'80 s. He also says that exposing the aggregate hurts the life of mortar. You thoughts?

Hi yes if you speak to 10 lime pointers you will probably get 7 different ways of doing the work Materials are not the same as what they were 100 years ago It also depends what lime you are using and what you're pointing it into If it hurts the life of the mortar id like to read the data or the proof of this I use a churn brush to remove the patina of lime on the surface of the mortar to enhance the appearance by exposing the coloured aggregate in the mortar I'm compacting the 5 different grains of sand together which gives it its strength If people want to do things different from the way I show them that's fine my way has been passed down to me and he had 45 years as a lime pointer The aim of my channel is to get people using lime

How do you go about removing the black (carbon i think) buildup on red sandstone? Great video
@GMTpointingspecialistsltd
@GMTpointingspecialistsltd 10 месяцев назад
You can use chemicals but are expensive Or lightly sand it but I do very little to change the character of the wall

@MrCobbsalad yeah sand stone has been compressed together so I don't like to cause any damage to it And you still want an old wall to look old

Hi mate. Can you use the churn brush to whack it back the same day the pointing is done or is it always next day?
@GMTpointingspecialistsltd
@GMTpointingspecialistsltd 2 года назад
No you can do the same day just depends on the air temperature and how wet your mix is Sometimes you do it twice as some lime will shrink so always check the next day what you churn brushed off

How long do you need to keep doing this process for (hessian material/mist/blue sheet end of day) days, weeks - many thanks
@GMTpointingspecialistsltd
@GMTpointingspecialistsltd 3 года назад
Depending on the temperature about 5 days if it's hot you want a slow set about 7 days if it's cold in cold weather you don't need to mist it just dampen the Hessian

It depends on the temperature and how much moisture the wall holds When it's ginger tip hard You will be able to tell if it's to soon it will drag it out

It depends on the temperature for how long it takes to dry You don't want it to dry too quick Stick and churn brush I use them as I want a rough textured finish
