I think you have made an error by marking out the cut of the platform NOT using your longest piece of stock. Should have used the MKIII not the LMS stock. As I am sure I saw the MKIII wobble as it is catching the platform edge.
Glenn White Well, you may think I have made an error and in hindsight I should have used the Mk3 as the template but isn’t hindsight wonderful after the event? You are wrong though, the Mk 3’s DO NOT touch the side walls of the platform, you are not with me here in the room seeing first hand what I am seeing, you are just making assumptions from what you can see from the video and your assumption is WRONG. they are close but not close enough to touch. Believe me when I say that I for one would not have been happy seeing these touch and would have made adjustment so they didn’t touch and I certainly would not have uploaded a video showing them touching. As regards a coach wobble because it scraped the side of the platform the I don’t see that. Yes, they are close but not close enough to tough. Cheers for now. ............Graham
@@GrahamFoulston Hi Graham. I an not talking about the straight platform but the curved side where the ramp is. I am sure the bottom of the MK3 is just catching the platform. Keep up the great work you are doing though.
Glenn White Thanks Glenn, I appreciate that you are talking about the curved section of the platform and not the straight section but as I keep saying, the coaches are not touching even though they appear on the video to you that they are, I think we will just have to agree on disagreeing on this but I am here looking at them - you are not. Cheers for now. ........Graham
Many thanks John and even a few years later I still don’t get any issues with coaches rubbing but that still doesn’t stop the nay sayers though does it!! *sigh*. Cheers. …………Graham
What an excellent job Graham. Not the easiest of work to carry out on a model railway and you have explained your thoughts and procedures very well indeed. I look forward to the next video. Cheers, Bob
RML Bobby D Thank you very much Rob and coming from you and your super modelling skills then I really appreciate your comment - thank you my friend. Cheers for now mate. ..........Graham
You have certainly got everything just right Graham with that platform. The gap along the edge of the platform looks perfic, as Pa Larkin would have said. You can't get the clearances much closer than that. Good method for lining up the dowels too. It is all starting to look like a proper railway again, now you have got that part of the layout ballasted and the platform in place. Well done my friend!
Geoffersh Thank you very much Geoff and yes, as you say - perfic! 😄👍. Really happy with this now mate, I can now go for the next platform which will be a big milestone for me, get those under my belt and then I will start on that rear street scene. Cheers for now mate. ...........Graham
MICHAELTANGUY Many thanks Michael and no problem sharing either, that’s really what RU-vid is all about especially with model railways, you can either use the information or not - that’s the beauty of it. Cheers for now mate. ............Graham
Hello Graham the platform looks great you've done a great job and will look fantastic when finished looking forward to seeing both finished cheers for now.
Grandad Choo choo Thanks mate, I hope to get both platforms complete by the end of the week if I can as long as I don’t run out of materials - mainly the Peco side strips, if I know I’m going to run short then I will order some more. I’m really pleased with the first one especially the fit, I couldn’t have asked for anything better to be honest. Cheers for now. ............Graham
Nigel Carter Thank you very much Nigel, to say I’m pleased with this is an understatement, it looks great now. It is a good thing Rob reminding me about the Mk 3’s but it was a bit late as I had already cut them but thankfully all the Mk3’s clear ok. Cheers for now mate. ..........Graham
John Carvil Hi John and thank you, yes the coaches do fit perfectly and I’m really pleased with the outcome, I can now carry on and build the second platform. Cheers for now. ............Graham
letzterinstanz Thank you very much Reinhard, I always like to say that this is how I do things rather than saying this is a how to type video, I leave it to folk to either use this way or another way that they have seen. I am very pleased with the way this has turned out though, it’s just right for my needs. Cheers for now mate. ...........Graham
CHRIS INDGE Blimey Chris, Thank you very much indeed, that compliment would have pleased my dad God bless him, but it has also pleased me too - thank you very much mate. Cheers for now. ............Graham
Hi Graham thankyou for posting this series on platforms, it looks great and perfect clearances. I have just completed my platforms using balsa wood, I am looking Fwd to when the buildings and lighting start to go in. Absolutely superb looking fwd to the next build. Cheers 👍👍
Brian Simpson Thank you very much for your comment Brian and yes, I’m looking forward to populating the platforms too with people, buildings and lighting. I am swaying to go for the modern image look this time round as I do like the look of it now, there is some great stuff available these days. Cheers for now mate. ...........Graham
George Wyatt Hi George and sorry for the late reply, I have only just seen this. The dowels worked great and fitted the two halves together well, the join doesn’t have to be that strong to be honest (although it is now) as the platform is going to spend most of its life just sitting there without any pressure or strain on it and in fact I have now screwed it down to the baseboard, I can lift it up again at a future date for wiring to go in etc and then screw it back down using the same holes so all good so far. Cheers for now mate. ..........Graham
As always, well-done and clearly explained! If time, distance and money were no obstacles, I would gladly sign-up for any inservice you would offer. It's always great listening and watching. 👍
Anthony Dodge The Model Train Outsider Hi Anthony and Many thanks for your kind comment and as always, it’s greatly appreciated sir. I don’t think you would want me to mess with your layout, I would never forgive myself if I screwed it up in some Way! 😄😄. Many thanks once again my friend. Cheers for now. ...........Graham
@@GrahamFoulston Oh, no, not have you or anyone mess with my layout. Videos are great, but I learn watching in 3D better and you'd be one of the chaps I would drop everything to go to a club or shop to see giving a workshop.
Anthony Dodge The Model Train Outsider I don’t blame you Anthony, I would hate others doing work on my layout too. 😄👍. Cheers for now mate. ...........Graham
Dunge Wood Model Railway Hi Paul and thanks mate, hopefully they painting won’t be too far off, I just need to complete the other platform fist. Cheers for now. .............Graham
Clearing is all that matters. Ah, a perfect fit with the dowels. That is a nice long platform. Brilliant work. Looking good my friend. The spacing is better than some of those I had to long jump across while I was over. Rob
Rob McCrain Thank you very much Rob for the comment and also for getting to test the “ankles 3”. 😄😄. I surprised myself to be honest with the dowel fit net, I couldn’t have asked for a better fit ! All in all, a good project but the best bit to see from my point of view was the spacing between the coaching stock and the platform, I don’t think I could ask for anything better than what I have at the moment. Cheers for now buddy and thank you. ...........Graham
Richard Swallow Thank you very much Richard, it has come out well, better than I thought it would to be honest especially with my woodworking skills - or lack of them!😄. Have a go mate, if I can do it then I’m sure you can. 👍. Cheers for now. ..........Graham
Hi I'm just about to start this for my layout and find your videos very helpful. Can I ask re the peco platform sides. I'm struggling to find the dimensions other than the 168mm length ie the width of them at top where it would meet the platform surface and the height which I've seen somewhere written as 20mm and not 18mm like the MDF. Would you be able to provide these dimensions - thanks
Fantastic Graham, just perfect spacing. Brilliant job. It was definitely worth checking with a variety of stock. I did my platforms with a pendolino coach, longer than Mk 3, all fine till my new pacer class 142, shortest coach foals badly, its got wider chassis. All sorted now mind.
Piccadilly Model Railway By John Warner I know what you mean by checking different stock, I have a Class 800 combing sometime this year when Hornby decide to release it but that wouldn’t be arriving on platform one anyway so I’m pretty safe there I think. Cheers for now. ...........Graham
Hi Graham.. I'm just building my platform and I stumbled across yours.. which I've decided to copy...sorry ... I've got the mdf cut out, and so far so good I've got some peco platform edge's...how did you weather yours..is there a video in here somewhere that I need to find ?? Thanks in advance
Great video on making platforms. Very smooth as well. The layout is powering along in full steam hey! Some useful material for all meddlers in this for sure. Clint
Leila Central Thank you very much Clint and yes, if folk want to use this method then that’s excellent but if not then there are many, many videos out there with other methods to choose from. Cheers for now mate. ...........Graham
Well you’ll not need a digital voice saying “mind the gap” . Good one . Like the look the station is taking on . Looks perfect fit to me. Might want to try it with 9F , doesn’t it’s cylinders stick out more than 4MT. I don’t think you’ll have problems, but just in case.
Russell Benton Hi Russel and your right, I think I can disregard that announcement! 👍. I have actually tried it with my Crosti 9F and all was fine, the 4MT had plenty of space too. I am going to make a decision to move on as I can’t keep testing all my locos, I’m sure all will fit that need to fit on that platform and if one or two don’t then they will just need to go to another side of the platform but I don’t think that is going to happen. Cheers for now mate. .............Graham
Anthony Strathmore road junction Thank you very much Anthony and I’m very pleased with the result of this platform so I can now carry on with the second now. Cheers for now mate. .........Graham
Derrick Roe Thanks Derrick, I’m hoping that I can get both platforms complete by the end of the week up to grey primer stage, just the final paint and weathering to do after that plus people, buildings, lighting etc of course. Cheers for now. ............Graham
Worked a treat and looks perfect. Locos clear it and coaches are realistically close to the platform edge, without requiring granny to do a Bob Beamon to get on or off.
TheDiomedef16 Many thanks Bruv, I’m happy with the end result even though a few aren’t ! 😄. I can now carry on and make the remaining platform Cheers for now mate. ...........Graham
Very good job Graham. You are far more accurate than I would be. The platform looks great with the trains in the station. Your track cam on the platform at a person height view would have looked good with the train going past.
Model Railway Noob Funny you should say about the track cam because that was exactly what I was thinking of when I stood back to take a look at the platform, that will be interesting to see. I think you have to be reasonably accurate when doing this sort of thing otherwise it might not fit too well and could end up looking a bit messy too. Anyway, cheers for now mate. ...........Graham
Tony Jones Yep, that’s the way I work, I have taken quite some time testing this track out until I’m happy with it, it’s now the turn of the platforms, I just need to check a few more ‘suspect’ trains first then I will finalise this platform and move onto the last one. Thanks for the comment mate and much appreciated. Cheers for now. .............Graham
Great job Graham, I don`t think you could fit a cats whisker between the coaches and the platform, so well done. The joining of the two sections of platform could not have been done any better. Cheers Greg
Greg Hale Thank you very much Greg, they are close but not close enough to touch the sides of the platform as some are suggesting, I am very happy with what I have so I will now carry on doing the other platforms 3 and 4. Cheers for now mate. .............Graham
Hi Graham , I don't know if you saw my video of my new 08 Hornby shunter . My main station island platform has been no trouble with all my rolling stock with clearances , the shunter got stuck on both sides . I am now redesigning the station area with new track work and platform . All good fun . .........Peter
Peter Shaw Really? I didn’t realise they were that wide, I will have to get my Hornby 08 shunter out and give it a go - you’ve got me worried now! Cheers for now mate. ..........Graham
It looks like the centre of the MK3 coach is a hairs breath away.. i would try the loco at speed as it may rock a little over the point you do not want the platform scrapping the coach side... please check it. Slow speed may not give you the effect of faster running.
Mark Wilson Hi Mark, I take you point (excuse the pun!) but I won’t have any traffic going through that particular platform at speed, it will be used for slow suburban traffic which will most likely stop there - and also the same on Platform 4 too. I will check it out as you suggest as I’m now curious but I don’t think I will have issues as although you say it clears with a hairs breath then don’t forget that these coaches taper inwards where the chassis is. Anyway, as I said, I will give it a try and see what happens but I don’t think anything will - we shall see what happens. Cheers for now. ..........Graham
Ah should be fine then, I have made a mistake in the past similar & ran at speed, by the time I realized I had a a few marked coaching stock, didn't want you to suffer my fate..
davie maclean Thanks Davie, I don’t think the camera was helping too much there, it is close but not as close as you think but it works - that’s the main thing. 👍. Cheers for now mate. ........Graham
oh my that was a very close one :) lucky its not another thew mm out, just to double check have you used your 350 or blue pullman set to see if they make it around with ease :)
GW RailFan No I haven’t checked either of those but I will do today just to be sure but the video does give a false impression of the coaches being much closer than they are in reality, they all clear without scraping, I will also check my 08 shunter too as I heard that they can cause issues too. Cheers for now. ..........Graham
ian attenborough Hi Ian, no I haven’t tried these at speed yet but I have no intention of having trains run through platform 1 at speed, this is where suburban trains will stop. Platforms 2 and 3 plus the two express tracks will be where fast trains at speed will pass. Apart from that then I don’t want speeding trains going through on that part of the track only inches away from the edge. They all clear fine without touching despite what some are saying so that’s good enough for me. Cheers for now. ............Graham
