Finishing Our Old Abandoned Cabin With 21st Century Solution

Finally we’re uniting the old with the new on our abandoned stone cabin & finishing the brickwork render! In a DIY renovation, some weeks are daunting & some are so so satisfying - well this week, work on our old farm house was both those things!
The prospect of rendering the exterior brickwork on the little stone house has intimidated us for a while, but we found a 21st solution that we hoped was going to stack the odds in our favour & make this job a success! But we still had big doubts. Will it even stick upside down? Can two building amateurs pull this off with any finesse!? What do we do if we mess it up? Unfortunately the only way to find out the answers is to dive in at the deep end!
As well as rendering the stone house, Victoria continued with the never-ending task of land maintenance on the farm ahead of the imminent summer deadline. We also enjoyed our first harvest from our new little vegetable garden - the hard work is starting to pay off & we’re finally tasting the fruits of our labour! 🥕 🥔 🥬 🍅 In between building work, Teddy & Poppy showed us their support & that they’re ‘in it with us’ 🐾 (Victoria’s face got a bit too excited 😂)
LIKE THIS VIDEO if you enjoyed it and SUBSCRIBE to follow our journey as we document our life here in Portugal and the many DIY projects that we'll be tackling including renovating a tiny stone home, setting up systems to grow some of our own food and finally restoring the 100+ year old farm house.
Also say hi in the comments! We'd love to hear from you 😊
Ricky and Victoria x
-------------
We're Ricky & Victoria 👋 We're slowly bringing an abandoned off grid Portuguese farm back to life & transforming it into a beautiful homestead for us & our two rescue dogs Teddy & Poppy.
We both agree that we’re not experts in anything that we do here, however we don’t let that stop us from giving it a try. We live our life by trying. We live our life by doing. We live our LIFE BY LIVING.

@@LifebyLiving Yes, it looks fantastic, up close and from afar. Impressive. I'm so lookin forward to the finished product, but thoroughly enjoying the journey to get there. Victoria, my grandfather was a farmer in Newfoundland, and he swore by putting capelin around the potato plants. Made for a smelly garden, but it increased yield, and kept almost all damaging insects and diseases at bay. Maybe fish meal would work? Less smelly. 😉

Just a few tips to help you...Elevate your computer screen so it is up higher so you don't curl over and hunch , elbow- put a heated bean bag under it when you work at a table, then a pillow . Swap the stuff under your elbow. Set a timer and every 30 minutes get up and stretch and twist and put your arms above your head

Concerning your potato blight problem - the potatoes that you showed look okay. I doubt that your soil was the source of the blight since that was your first planting of the potatoes in that spot, so the blight spores were probably on the seed potatoes you used. We had a blight problem with our potatoes last year after buying our seed potatoes from a different garden center. They do make a powder to treat potato blight, which you should find in any (large) garden shop, perhaps Amazon there. However, make sure you have potatoes that show signs of blight before treating the soil as it will kill the soil if overused. Keep an eye on the leaves and if the blight comes back, cut the plant back to the soil and harvest your potatoes. Do not reuse that plot until it has been treated in case the spores are in the soil. If in doubt, you can have the soil tested. Good luck!

We’re in our second year using the Ruth Stoudt method(after having blight in tomatoes 3 years ago)planting our potatoes in straw. Last year we planted them directly on the soil/compost but had some moisture & bug issues. This year we put a layer of straw down topped with a thick layer of our finished compost, bone meal & 10-10-10 around each potato seed. Good thing too bc we’ve had so much rain, we were afraid they’d still rot. Nope, not yet. And still-no blight. Knock on wood. The straw doesn’t go to waste, it goes into the compost pit. I made my husband pull the blight infected tomatoes & burn it in our fire pit. We surely didn’t want it infecting our compost. We live in town(after many years in woods) no place to dump it far from the garden. We planted beans & cucumbers in that bed last year. Avoid planting tomatoes or potatoes in that affected bed for a few years. Looks like you caught it early!

It's obvious what makes you happy. However, it is difficult to express in words how surprised and happy the dogs are. The field wind in your nostrils and the earth under your paws............

I don’t think any human can truly understand the happiness dogs feel over such simple pleasures

Hello Barry and Victoria 🤗 great video again! The result looks absolutely amazing, especially that nice crisp edge where the render meets the stonework. Beautiful job 🙌🏻 You two are an absolute pleasure to watch. Loved the little experiment with the doggos 🐶 All the best to you both (or 4) and especially get well soon, Ricky 💪🏻
