This is a “quilt-saver” for my little hexagon project! I have watched several tutorials, but yours is so helpful! It’s clear, concise, to the point, (😉) and I appreciate it so very much. Thank you. You are a favorite.

Thank you so much for this great tutorial!!! My mother is 92 and she just finished a Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt that she began in the 1960s! I have been searching the internet for a way to finish this properly. Your tutorial is so clear and binding the irregular edges makes so much more sense than cutting the edges off straight! Thank you!

Dear Marci, thank you for showing this demonstration as I too am in the process of making a rather large hexagonal cloth for the Christmas table. This quilt comprises 7 hexagons and I wondered how to bind this whilst still maintaining the irregular shape. So I did enjoy and learn loads from your demonstration. Once again thank you.

Marci , that was stupendous! a wonderful tutorial on how to finish a GFG quilt. This is my first quilt ! can you imagine that ! I don't know what got into me to start this as my first one. And as was expected i got stuck at the binding. Your video has shed light on how to go about this. You've so clearly and patiently demonstrated the steps. I'm in no doubt about what i must do. Thank you so much. God Bless You.

I managed the corners by folding the quilt diagonally in half and the corner then came out with a point as well instead of being squared off, much nicer! But thank you for the tuition, never thought there was an easy way and you proved me wrong!

so glad to finally get the answer/tutorial I needed to finish off a Grandma's Flower Garden quilt top I made for our granddaughter. It took me 5 years to piece it and just sent it off to be quilted. I broke my right thumb years ago and no longer quilt extensively. Hopefully it will be finished for her graduation in June. Will

Great job teaching this technique. You seem so comfortable doing it. I have quilted for a few years, but will admit I avoid edges such as this one. I love the irregular edges, just didn't feel qualified to tackle them. Now, thanks to you, I can with confidence. Thanks sew much for sharing.

Bloody excellent AND I LOVE that you are using an old machine vs a $2000 fancy machine!! Most of us do NOT have fancy machines. Mine is a 1955 Singer. It was the 1st one with zig-zag - $15 WITH the cabinet from Salvation Army 20 years ago and I LOVE it - excellent machine & VERY well cared for. BUT it doesn't translate when I am watching a lot of quilters with their Babylock's #3 stitch (whatever all that means!?!)

I too love working with a simpler machine. I don't think I will ever be a sewing machine company's promoter because their focus, rightly so, is all about the bells and whistles. I like KISS.

I just got a Grandmothers flower garden, hand pieced by my grandmother, and I didn't know what I was going to do about the edges. I am SO happy to have found this tutorial, so thank you for making it. My question is - since the whole piece is done by hand so far, should I stitch the facing on by hand (which will take a long time) in order to maintain the hand work integrity? Or Can I get away with machine stitching the facing on without the quilting gods coming after me? I don't want to ruin the value of the quilt with the final step.

Hello Janet. I looked at a quilt that I have that is an antique, that is done completely by hand. However I know that the Amish finish their quilts with machine stitching, so you can finish it by machine stitching and be just fine. That way you can enjoy the quilt sooner! - QuiltMB Team

Very nice method. I was wondering how to do this, as I am piecing a quilt with 4 inch hexies, during time in the car while we drive to our granddaughter's basketball games. It is amazing how much you can get done during otherwise wasted time. I will use this method to finish the edges. Thank you!

Very good questions that relate to this video and many others. There is a small portion of Mitered Binding Inside Corners that shows how to do a tailor's knot which is good for when you need to tie into the fabric without a huge knot. As for the type of hand stitch, we are working on more information in our blog and videos. Stay tuned. Thank you for your interest. - Marci

Very clear instructions, very happy to have found this video! I just don't know what my next step is. I have hexagon blocks done , and I'm not sure what the next step is, do I quilt each block before adding a backing or do I quilt with the batting! I am not sure how to do this, my plan is to make a King sized quilt.

Would love to have a tutorial on how to put the flowers together in Grandmother's Flower Garden. I have the flowers but don't know how to put them all together. I would prefer the traditional way as opposed to appliqueing them onto a block. Thanks for the help.

I just found your channel and subscribed. You are a wealth of information!! I started a grandmothers flower garden quilt over 15 years ago and just rediscovered it. The hexagons are larger. The center is black. The surrounding hexi’s have horses on them and the colors are white, gray and some black. The row surrounding those are all white with a faint design throughout. I have to decide a color to connect all the “flowers” but don’t know how much fabric to buy. I have quite a few flowers that need the gray sewn around them. I can easily place the flowers on my bed including the unfinished flowers. I don’t know anyone that quilts. Can you help me? Also how much fabric would I need to buy for the edging? I really appreciate any help you can give me. Karen

Your quilt was still relatively straight. What do you do if the quilt is still shaped with the hexagon block shape ? Do you put in miters around each block, or do you make your facing quite deep, which would take a tremendous amount of fabric as the facing also has to be doubled?

@kasf1982able If you are trying to get a miter on the front and the back, you need to watch my video, Mitered Binding for Different Angles. The technique shown here is only mitered (and shown) on one side. Let me know if you need further help on this. Contact me at my website, alicia's attic.

When do you remove the paper pieces? Do you keep the outer edge folded when you sew the facing to the edge or do you unfold just the outer edge? (I think I said that right.) Thank you so very much.

Ok, hand sewing, repairing a seem that cannot be turned inside out...? Or the finish seam on a quilt. Any help?
@terryborger5124
@terryborger5124 4 года назад
Marci would you do the same finish with a GFG if you had edges that dipped in 3.5" on the sides and 6.5" on the top and bottom? What size fabric pieces would you use?
@MarciBaker
@MarciBaker 3 года назад
If I had this large of irregular edge, it needs to be twice the depth plus seam allowance plus a little extra, say 1/2” for fudge factor. If you don’t want to use that much fabric, you can cut strips that are the width of the dip plus 1” or more. This allows for a generous 1/4” to be sure all seams are caught and 5/8” - 3/4” for an edge folded under for the finished edge after turning.
@terryborger5124
@terryborger5124 4 года назад
Do you suggest a different way to finish the edges for hand quilting? I've done the whole quilt by hand and would like to finish by hand.
@MarciBaker
@MarciBaker 3 года назад
You have probably already figured out your solution. In case the project has been on hold, if I was hand piecing this, I would take the time to miter each corner rather than use a facing. It is not difficult to manipulate the work for hand sewing, compared to arranging it for machine sewing, in order to achieve the mitered corners. See my video on mitered binding for other angles.

I have a grandmothers flower garden with a lot if white material all thru it. But theWhite has yellowed over the years. Justthe top. 1400 1in hexagons in it.What to do away with the yellow? Thanks.
@MarciBaker

I don't have experience in removing the stains and yellowing on old quilts. There are products available, but have not used them before. For the tops and quilts that I have with stains, I have left them as they are - part of their story :-)

I don't understand how you pinned the facing on with seams even together and was able to turn it inside out or sew it to the back. The Finnish ending was totally confusing.
@MarciBaker
@MarciBaker 9 месяцев назад
If I understand the point where you are lost, the facing is applied like a double fold binding. It is folded in half (using two layers) so that the fold will be the edge that is sewn down. Hopefully this makes more sense.

It looks beautiful. I'm just really green at sewing skills. I have a hand sewn grandmothers garden quilt that was quilted not long ago. I would like to do facing on it but, I just don't know if I can do it. So it's still unfinished. Thank you for your comment and instruction.
