Hannah Gavios runs using crutches. The native New Yorker calls it “crutching” or “going for a crutch.” An avid runner since high school, Gavios suffered a spinal cord injury after a horrific attack in 2016 that left her partially paralyzed. Unable to imagine a life without running, Gavios learned how to run in a different way. She also became a certified yoga instructor and began studying Krav Maga. In 2019, she completed the 2019 New York City Marathon. “No matter how much you’ve lost in your life, there’s always gains,” Gavios says.

Five and a half years ago my left leg got shattered by a ton of wooden plates that fell on it. I have been recovering since then, my biggest surgeries finished 2 months ago and now i'm training to walk again. Today i managed to bend my leg 65 degrees for the first time in 5 years and i'm so proud of it. Your struggles aren’t miniscule just because someone else’s seem harder to bear. If you live your life comparing it to others, you won’t be able to truly appreciate your own experiences. It’s like if I lost my favorite sweater that my best friend made me, and someone else’s grandmother passed. I can still cry and lament over losing a cherished item that I had worn for years, that’s connected to a person I really value. The same way you can lament over losing a loved one. Can you answer who was in more pain and had more sorrow? Even knowing every single detail, everything is relative

This is so amazing and inspiring! It's disgusting that this man took away some of her mobility but she doesn't let it take her life away. I suffer from what Doctor's call musculoskeletal pain that is debilitating at times, and I use a cane as a result of it. I've been dealing with it for 5 years now, and not a single Doctor or test can tell me what caused it or why but it's frustrating. Before I woke up with this one day, I was extremely active and always doing something, now living with this pain for what seems to be life long I've learned to not let it stop me from doing what I love, and that's walking and exercise. To anyone out there who suffers from chronic pain and doesn't have hope know that things will be better and you can't give up!!

She is a winner in my eyes , this was very inspiring. This has truly encouraged me to push forward and not look behind me. We are all capable of greatness, we just need to tap into the power within and anything is possible .

It is a truly inspiring story, but the incident happened in Thailand. It's funny how they edited her dialogue as if it happened in Vietnam.

Wow, she has a passion that not everyone has. She was paralyzed and she was a runner. Anyone who knows her please say that I like her.

@The Spammons What about people who commit suicide? They lose their passions, give up on life. That's what I mean, and indeed not all have a passion for life.

@The Spammons How do you know they have a passion for suicide? Why are they always depressed when they want to kill themselves? Is that what is called passion for suicide? And I'm not talking about winning or losing when it comes to passion. There is no competition for passion, but if your passions are achieved, you will feel victorious at least for yourself.
