NATO already said that Sweden is aplicatting to enter NATO and that it’s only a matter of time until they enter and so they will defend Sweden like they would an oficial NATO member.

Doesn't matter if it is an EU or NATO issue: Hungary will always veto it, eventually negotiate a compromise to get something they want. Usually not because they have problems with the issue, but mainly to capitalise on the opportunity. Transactional behaviour. What a reliable ally...

Luckily Sweden doesn't have a land border with Russia, only a maritime one. And if Sweden was nuked or attacked I can't see NATO letting it slide even if Sweden wasn't a member yet.

Finland did consider a union with Sweden in 1940, to discourage further military aggression from the USSR. Now it could be the other way around. We can always let them become independent again. We're not greedy that way.
I am a bit curious considering that once Erdogan gave presidential assent and the document was deposited. Does that mean Finland now will have to approve Sweden as a member as well?

@@Florian0799 Actually as far as i know, we in finland had to approve swedish nato bid, but that was already pre-emptively accepted with the laws package signed for finnish national law for nato membership bill as there is elections now on sunday. We have everything ready even if the government is still unformed. or that's what i have read about it

On one hand, Finland are arguably the more important of the two to join nato so I'm glad, but im also pissed about Sweden since the objections they have are manufactured. Hell, turkey won't let them in because a Kremlin funded Danish politician burned the Quran in a very public manor. They really shouldn't get in the way because of a political stunt that Russia pulled off.
I believe the last thing the Turkish government would care about is a symbolic incident like burning the Quran .. They are trying to pull certain benefits before giving their approval & the Quran burning is a mere excuse to achieve their goal ..
The reason why sweden isn't approved by Turkey yet is much more complicated, it's more related to the fact sweden used to support kurdish terrorists and some of their politicians openly supported PKK and YPG. I hope that both countries get past it and be allies

I bet that Orban and Erdogan are now just calculating what price tag they can put for Sweden's membership. It's tantamount to extortion, but such is world politics: to get something you have to give something in return.
Wouldn't say Sweden is really "left outside in the cold" though. While we await Turkey signing off (Hungary/Orban admin has officially stated they will not cause any delays to Sweden's admittance, so Orban is clearly just waiting for Erdogan to go first), Sweden is already in good security company. Tight and secure defense cooperation with the other Nordic countries, a plethora of newer security partnerships, guarantees and affirmations of existing ones from most Western countries. The Baltic Sea is _heavily_ guarded so any large scale naval assault is extremely unlikely, and Sweden is surrounded by NATO countries by land. Russians would pretty much have to go through both Norway and Finland to set foot, wheel, track or wing in mainland Sweden - they'd be swarmed by hundreds of F35s, Gripens, bombers and extensive modern missile defense well before crossing the Swedish border. Nothing is 100% guaranteed, and it's not quite the same as full NATO membership. But even in the hypothetical event that Turkish sign-off never comes, the Swedes most certainly do not stand alone in any way. We have their backs, as they have ours.
In some sense this is a sad thing. This has happened because war has returned to Europe and the Finns face a real risk to their security. But in another sense this is hopeful. The defensive military alliance of Western Democracies grows stronger. The mistake of the 1930's of letting small European democracies be bullied and conquered by dictators one-by-one, is not being repeated. We are standing together in a way unprecedented in history. So I welcome the Finnish people to NATO. Hädässä ystävä tunnetaan.
It’s pretty clear why Turkey doesn’t want Sweden in on NATO $$$$$$$$ Sweden has a very talented defense industry, and having them be a primary supplier in NATO could lose Turkey out on some big contracts That and a couple of other reasons
Turkey literally supplies nato with deadly and cheap drones and long range missiles And they keep the most dangerous ones to themselves but obviously with the intention of china iran and Russia because if they disclose their deadly weapons it will be researched and useless Usa and france does the same thing they never show their real good weapons or sell them

@@dkupke And yet they weren't members, had no vote, no financial commitment, if they where attacked NATO wouldn't be obliged to intervene directly, including troops, and a lot of the Finnish population & politicians didn't want to be part of NATO. And the 'formality' took a year. Maybe someone should have told NATO it was just a formality, it would have saved a lot of time & meetings. 🤔
@@JohnDoe-tx8lq Sweden and Finland have participated in joint exercises with NATO, they are active in NATO intelligence sharing, and Swedish+Finnish volunteers serve in NATO humanitarian missions. The option for full membership has been on the table but had simply never taken priority-until Russia invaded Ukraine. Russia has been trying to stake a claim on islands and waters in the Baltic and Arctic that belong to Sweden, Finland, and the other Nordic states, and putin just plain isn’t playing with a full deck, so they have ample reason to want the added security of full NATO membership. There is no evil conspiracy, no new world order subverting the will of the Swedish and Finnish peoples. The only one to blame for this turn of events is Putin. Finland’s ascension to NATO membership has actually been quite compared to the special process for prior member states, and it only took this long because Erdogan wanted to wring out some concessions in return for Turkey’s approval. He was always going to say yes, he wanted to see how much he could leverage out of got.
I’m happy that the Turkish and the Finnish to put their differences behind them for the greater good. Decisions like this makes the world a better place :)
At the end of the day, Finland gave Turkey a hefty dose of diplomacy, to make Erdogan feel extra special, and nothing else. In essence, Turkey wanted Finland out of the way so that it can concentrate on tormenting Sweden, like a little boy who's burning bugs with a magnifying glass.
I understand being frustrated and calling it a "drawn out process" but let's be frank. Finland's accession to NATO was the quickest accession in NATO's history.
Erdogan and Orban have to stop playing silly games with Sweden and best of all if they were out voted in their countries. They are both the type of persons who just cannot let a chance like this unused to get something from somewhere, like for instance from Putin. Sweden will join there is no doubt about that.

Interesting that Turkey decided to approve Finland out of the two. If Turkey had voted for Sweden instead, then Hungary would still be the holdout for Sweden, meanwhile Turkey would still block Finland from joining. While Putin isn't thrilled about either Sweden or Finland joining, Finland's border makes it the more politically volatile one. Turkey approving Finland may signal it's turning farther from Russia, although it could only be temporary with the lead up to their next election

I'm not surprised Finland was accepted faster than Sweden into NATO in terms of advantages Finland has more strategic advantage to benefit NATO than Sweden does. Not saying Sweden doesn't bring any value but Finland edges out Sweden just by a little. Also it benefits Sweden now that Finland is admitted into NATO because it would remove Sweden from being a future target after whatever concludes in Ukraine.

I want Sweden to join NATO, but they are now encircled by NATO, so they have the protection. Sweden just needs a mutual defense treaty with Norway and Finland and problem solved.
Now lets not forget to thank Russia for making Finland and Sweden apply for NATO membership 🤷🏻♂️🤣 And i (🇳🇴) hope we can get Sweden into NATO asap, so that all Scandinavian brothers are together in an alliance
