Finland and Estonia are planning to construct a 15 billion dollar tunnel across the Gulf of Finland, connecting the capital cities of Helsinki and Tallinn. A Helsinki-Tallinn tunnel would transform the economies of the region, creating a twin city metropolitan area and improving connectivity between Finland and the rest of Europe. Two sides are working for its development: the government controlled FinEst Initiative and FinEst Bay Area Development, a private company led by Finnish entrepreneur Peter Vesterbacka.

I made that trip once for tourism, I asked the taxi driver to the ferry terminal for a receipt, to have an idea how much they cost so in case I needed another one I could calculate if it was convenient to take one or not (putting a value on time saved, so to speak), but the way I told him made him think that I was using it the get reimbursed by my company or such. He looked amused and when leaving he told me "Enjoy your time in Tallinn!!!!" Haha, of course everybody knows ;)

If I have understood, the Estonians are indeed traveling to Finland for work at various construction sites. The Finns have had other kinds of jobs in Estonia, but much of their travel has also been traditional tourism. It started gradually already before the Estonian independence, but skyrocketed after that. And like so many other comments have already stated, the lower alcohol prices in Estonia have become an incentive, if not the entire reason for Finns to travel to Estonia. One of recent news I have seen is that Estonian alcohol prices are increasing and presumably that is causing more Finns extending their trips all the way through Estonia to Latvia and Lithuania.. Just a piece of news I have seen in Finnish newsprints (actually web news).

But we do get a return for those taxes, our society runs great, with free healthcare, education, social welfare etc.

I have my doubts about it being ultimately economically viable. As an engineering project it would be amazing, but its costs would rival that of the Channel tunnel between France and UK with fraction of the potential traffic, not forgetting that mega projects like these have a tendency to balloon in costs as the project goes on. Also Helsinki and Tallinn already have quite well established ferry systems that can get across within hours. Even if it wasn't strictly speaking economically viable, it still would basically turn Tallinn into southern Helsinki. So there's that.
@PresidentialWinner
@PresidentialWinner 4 года назад
@@MidWitPride You're right about all that. But the last part sounds weird. Just because two cities are close to each other and easily accessed from one another does not mean they integrate into each other automatically. The culture, language and national barriers are quite high, even if they are very similar (they are) and even with no barriers for travelling or no need for visas or passports etc. It's a tale of two cities, not of one.
@carleryk
@carleryk 4 года назад
@@PresidentialWinner Ests and Finns are both Finnic nations with mostly shared culture and similar languages. Helsinki and Tallinn most probably would become more of a twin city/metropolitan area with tunnel. Both cities are quite different both by architecture and population. Tallinn has been around as a town from the 13th century when Northern Estonia aka Estland was part of the Danish Kingdom, but Helsinki grew to become a substantial city only during the time when Finland was part of Imperial Russia starting from 17th century. Tallinn also has a lot bigger immigrant population mostly from the Soviet occupation time's mass immigration which makes it the 4 th European capital after Brussels, Riga and Amsterdam by amount of immigrants and foreign nationals. Helsinki's population is about 80% Finnish while Tallinn's population is unfortunately only about 50% Estonian. This tunnel would most probably start a boom of Finns moving to Tallinn and Estonia as a whole, since real estate is cheaper in Estonia (at least right now. I don't mind it actually since Finns and Ests are genetically, linguistically and culturally the closest nations to each other. We'll manage 🙂

RU-vid is like a lair for amateur "documentary" makers with a tendency for factually inaccurate deviations - likes this one. 1) The FinEst Bay Area project was made redundant with the new provincial land use plan of Uusimaa. There's no space allocation for the tunnel infrastructure in Espoo. Thus Vesterbacka's plans are at the time being not doable. 2) Like others have already rightly noted: what commuting from Finland to Estonia? It's very marginal. Booze runs and other leisure travel is the most common form of travel in that direction. Mostly the ro-pax ferries carry Baltic workers and loads of cargo from the rest of Europe, as well as some exports from Finland. 3) The Arctic Ocean connection is hypothetical and it would be fair to mention it doesn't exist as per say, but it's just a vision. As for Russia, well, there's railway links from there already. 4) Helsinki doesn't have 1.3 million inhabitants. You've looked at the greater Helsinki region. 5) Finland wasn't invaded in 1939. Yes, the Soviets did indeed try that twice during the world war, but you implied that the country was invaded. You need to be more precise with your wordings.
@aquila4460
@aquila4460 4 года назад
Regarding 5). The Soviet Union entered Finnish sovereign territory with the use of military force and forced Finland to sign a peace agreement that fulfilled all of the Soviet Unions initial demands. Occupying and then taking over large parts of land on the Karelian Isthmus. Furthermore, the Continuation war was started by the finish and ended in a mostly Status quo peace yet Finland still had to pay reparations. Yes, Finland fought extraordinarily well and certainly managed to defend from a full takeover but Finland was invaded.

In my view your comment is unnecessarily negative and doesn't really give much value to the viewer or the creator. I could be wrong but you sound like the kind of person who has never tried to make anything creative all by themselves, and tries to achieve a moral high ground by hating on someone else who is actually trying to make an effort. Firstly, your wording makes you sound like an elitist who will not consider a creative work worthy of any praise unless it has received a 5 star review from a guy who has been declared to have a good taste by some newspaper. "A lair for amateur "documentary" makers" - not really a constructive way to introduce your criticism whatever it may be, right? If you actually cared about the creator improving in what they do that wouldn't be the way you start a sentence. And what exactly makes a "real documentarist" any better than a guy who prefers to make them independently and share them (for free!!) on RU-vid? Because they might have funding from a production company and maybe a film degree? Is that supposed to make human error magically disappear? Are having financial backing and formal qualifications requirements for creating exciting stories? Of course not. Even if your attitude seems shitty, you could at least have some valid points, but you really fail to impress me with them as well. Points 4, and 5 are just nitpicking since none of those mistakes affect the big picture of the tunnel project that this video is trying to convey. Points 1, 2 and 3 focus only on the current situation - that's not what you want to do if you're building something that might be ready in 10 years and should last for 100. The legislation of Uusimaa, alcohol tourism and the Arctic Ocean connection are things that are not set in stone in any way. Who are you to say that these things won't change in the near future? Legislation is supposed to change over time, that's why we have a thing called the parliament. And Estonia is raising it's alcohol tax every year so soon booze will be the same price as in Finland anyways. The railway connection could be a way to create new reasons to travel than the ones we have right now. For example, you wouldn't want to travel (at least regularly) 2+ hours in one direction to attend a business meeting or a sports game, but you wouldn't mind doing it every day if the travel time was 30 minutes. Thus, the railway would offer much more reasons for people to go from Helsinki to Tallinn than just booze runs. In a nutshell: If you don't want a tunnel between Helsinki and Tallinn, that's fine. (Your opinion most likely won't matter anyway) If you don't like watching "documentaries" on RU-vid, that's fine as well. (You can watch the real ones on Netflix right?) But when someone is trying to inform the rest of us (still, for free!!!!) about a project that makes people excited about the future, you shouldn't be negative and overly critical even if the result isn't 100% perfect (which never happens in life anyways). I really didn't want for my comment to turn out too negative, but this one hit a nerve for me. :D I don't mean to insult, this is just my strong criticism to your criticism.

Every Finn only talks about alcohol, but when travels times are cut to a fraction, it will open a whole new world. Look at the Öresund Link between Copenhagen and Malmö. Before the fixed link, people from the Swedish side mostly travelled to Denmark for cheap alcohol, but after its construction people started to commute en masse, not only from the big connected border cities, but also quite a bit inland, widely exceeding expectations. Go for the bigger tunnel! Don't make the same mistake as Denmark and Sweden with the Öresund Link, cheaping out on capacity resulting it being maxed out after only 15 years. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%98resund_Bridge

As most Finns have pointed out, most of the travelling from Helsinki to Tallinn is just for the sake of buying alcohol. Here's why: the excise tax on alcohol is lower in Estonia than in Finland, and thus alcohol is very cheap. A study in 2014 indicated that 34% of alcohol sold in all of Estonia is bought by Finns. Furthermore, the average salary in Helsinki is 50000€ (35000€ after taxes) whereas it's only 26000€ (~20000€ after taxes) in Tallinn encouraging many Estonians to seek employment in Finland, but not the other way around. I'd personally love this tunnel as an easy gateway to the rest of Europe. Currently the only way Finns can access European rail transport is either by taking a ferry to Estonia or to Sweden (or Saint Petersburg, Russia, but that's a whole other story). Getting back to Finland has to be done the same way. This causes a lot of extra hassle for travellers, and can even be a deterrent for many timid adventurers.

The wage in Finland is 60000€? That seems *VERY* exaggerated. I'd say more around 40000€
@miskee11
@miskee11 4 года назад
@@Taevas___ True, it does seem quite inflated, but this figure only stands true for the capital region of the country. The data was taken from an unbiased source which states the average monthly salary in Helsinki is 5010€, but 3500€ in Finland in general. I'll recheck the values from other sources and edit my post accordingly. Thanks for the comment. *EDIT:* Based on values from multiple sources, the average income in Helsinki seems to be around 50000€ before taxes, and about 35000€ after taxes. The figures for Tallinn were quite correct, as the average range seems to be around 24 to 32 thousand euros in various sources. The income tax in Estonia is only 20% compared to Finland's 30%, though, so your net income wouldn't be that far away at around 20000€.

When will they make a tunnel from Umeå to Finland? I want to get some proper sauna.

Throughout the years, atleast since the 80:s, atleast 10 ideas, suggestions and proposals have been forwarded to both Swedish amd Finlandic governments. All those proposals have been for bridges. So far nothing between Umeå and Vasa where the closest place is across the ocean.

The new ferry between the cities is really quite nice, and you can also drive via Haparanda. Building a tunnel or a bridge is just too expensive at this point.

I think it's pronounced gauge, and not guage.

Gauge rhymes with the English word 'page' (as in a book). Proving once again that English spelling was invented by some drunk, malicious dude from around the Tudor period.

It’s a pipe dream. If the tunnel in the English Channel isn’t profitable, this tunnel won’t be in a million years.

It is old information. Estonian government has rejected this project 2 months ago due to "economically impractical reason". End.

@@hullmees666 Viking and Eckerö means EVERYTHING to the Ålanders. They will never sell those to anyone. Even if their business reduce down to one ship sailing between Mariehamn and Kapellskär (or Grislehamn and Eckerö). Those two companies practically own the whole island.
