Pesäpallo is played pretty much throughout the country but it's probably most popular in Pohjanmaa region (around Seinäjoki). One weird thing is that it's thought of as a game played by... not necessarily rural areas but people outside the main cities. That's one reason why the Turku stadium looks small, and it doesn't help that most of the seating is sort of hidden behind the embankment. Out of the ten largest cities, Tampere is the only one to currently have a team in men's Superpesis. On women's side, that number is four (Helsinki, Tampere, Jyväskylä, Pori). As you saw on round 2, Jyväskylän Kirittäret is the most successful women's team of the last couple of decades. When you consider that very few large cities have good teams, it's even more impressive that (based on pre-pandemic attendance figures) the men's Superpesis is the third most popular league in the country (behind ice hockey's Liiga and football's Veikkausliiga), while women's Superpesis is the most popular women's league.

Great information - I assume players get paid? Or do players play for their town/region?
@rujasu7731

@@alloverthemap23 Statistics from the preseason press conference were that in the women's league 30% get paid more than 5000€ per season, and 90% get paid anything at all. Men's league operates on roughly double the budget, but you still get plenty of players who either study or do part-time work between games and training. Growth in attendance was 24% and 40% for men and women respectively last year, so the association is definitely angling to get more people playing as full-time pros. Local player % varies, depending on how attractive the town is. A team from Tampere can just hire really good players from everywhere because the town has draw, but for example Alajärvi's Superpesis team is almost exclusively local talent, since it's a small town in the middle of nowhere.

17:45 Funny thing is that in the Helsinki metropolian area nobody really watches or plays Pesäpallo. The southernmost team in Superpesis is in Hyvinkää around 37 miles to north from Helsinki. I personally understand as much as you probably about this sport and I believe its the case for many others in southern Finland.

The southernmost team in MEN'S Superpesis is in Hyvinkää. Roihu plays their home games in the women's league at Roihuvuori in Helsinki. Granted, attendance is less than a half of what the top teams pull, but it's a very pleasant crowd unlike some other towns.

Pesis (as it's often called) is very popular around the country in smaller cities and towns but not in Helsinki metropolitan area. You had done nice research of the game!

Didn't quite get the perfect score. That 4th round was tricky... I managed to find the correct arena by just going through the stadions, and seeing if the roads would match up, but was slightly off on the marker and lost 3 points. Rest of the rounds were a lot easier tho. Also was nice to see my hometown arena (Jyväskylä) in this game, although that has been fully rebuilt last year, so the imagery isn't accurate anymore. I wasn't actually aware that they played winter league in pesäpallo, cause it is very much a summer sport. I don't follow or play the sport seriously, but I've played it casually with friend groups here and there, in 2022 last time. It's also played in school PE classes quite often, and at least back in the day when I went to school, was one of the favorite sports in school classes, so most of Finns do have some experience in it. @14:17 Yes you got the bases right, and yes the pitcher (lukkari in Finnish) is positioned next to the opposing team's batter and the ball is pitched vertically instead of horizontally, like baseball. Thus there's also no need for separate catcher behind the home base and the only outfielder that is usually in the home base is the pitcher. When you strike the ball can't directly fly out of the play area (including back line), or it will be a foul. But if it hits the ground within the play area and bounces or rolls over the lines afterwards (or if the outfielder throws it off the play area, but that is a lot more rare), it's still in play. The games are usually played in day time, in the summer, so there's no need for additional lights in the arenas. I'd say it is about equally popular all around Finland, although of course some towns might have slight pesäpallo boom due to their team having a lot of success in the league.

For anyone interested, here's some history of pesäpallo, the rules and couple of full games: "Pesäpallo 100 vuotta", "PESÄPALLO: FINLAND’S ANSWER TO BASEBALL | MLB EUROPE PLAY STORIES", "The Rules of Pesäpallo (Finnish Baseball) - EXPLAINED!", "Sotkamon Jymy - Vimpelin Veto 3. finaali 2011" and "Vimpelin Veto - Manse PP (3. finaali / 2022)".

Superpesis (main league) has their own RU-vid channel, called "superpesis". There are lot of videos to check. 16:50 - Finland on summer, darkness comes well after 9pm, or nortnern parts later (or never, due mid night sun)... Games starts often around 6pm (weekdays) and 4pm (weekends), so there is plenty of light. Many pesis stadions have lights.

Also, some stadiums have a dual use: they're frozen over in the winter when the days are really short.

Hippos in Jyväskylä is called that because there was originally a hippodrome, a.k.a. a horse racing course there. The current hippodrome, called "Killeri" in Jyväskylä is outside of the centre. Now there are many sports facilities in Hippos.

The old Hippos stadium (round 2) has been demolished. The new one is built next to the old stadium. Best pesäpallo stadium In Jyväskylä is Koskenharju.

Main difference with rules is that the ball has to land on the play area so you cannot just hit the ball straight "out of the park" like in baseball.
@alloverthemap23

I like that - it makes the game more strategic. What happens if it goes over the stand? Out?
@sasiuru
@sasiuru 5 месяцев назад
@@alloverthemap23 Out, if it hasn't bounced inside the play area. If it bounces and evacuates behind the stands - good luck to retrieve it before everyone on bases has run back home. Same with if bounces and goes to water, someone has to swim and throw it back to home base to stop runs. It is also common practice to hit ball front of the home few meters, so no-one outside (on play area) cannot catch it and throw it to 1st base on time to burn player, often done when player hitting ball has used 2 of their 3 hits/swings and 1st base is empty.
@petrirantavalli859
@petrirantavalli859 5 месяцев назад
@@alloverthemap23 I think the game is paused if the ball is unreachable but if it rolls over the edge from hitting the field first then the opposing team is allowed to clear as many runners as they have on the field + the batter as they can in what ever time it takes to return the ball to play (to burn the running players).

For fourth round I knew it was roughly somewhere in ostrobothnia, there was Halpa-Halli logo and Eepee ad, but I couldn't pinpoint it further than that either.

Great that you played my map! Some of the locations are very hard, since many "stadiums" are in the middle of a forest and the closest street view is pretty far away :D

My guess about why there are no floodlights is that these are small towns and they just don't want to spend money on such things for a sport that is played only for a few months during the year. Like many have noted here, pesäpallo is popular mainly in smaller towns. The teams themselves don't have that much money either. I checked some numbers, in ice hockey even the smallest teams that play in the main league have a budget over 5 million euros (biggest is Tappara with over 15 million), whereas in pesäpallo all teams except one have a budget under a million euros (smallest budget is only 330,000). Pretty much everyone in Finland has tried pesäpallo though, because it is one of the sports that is played at school. It is easy to draw a pesäpallo field on a schoolyard so it can be played pretty much anywhere. The equipment doesn't cost much either, so it is easy for schools to arrange.

Latest budget stats put four teams over a million, Jymy highest with 1.7 million and Manse PP lowest at 1 million. And Alajärven Ankkurit works with 419,000€ as the lowest in the league.
