Finland has announced it will reopen two crossings on its border with Russia.
In November, Helsinki shut all of its eight border crossings with Russia, after it accused Moscow of encouraging migrants from third countries to cross into Finland. Helsinki says this was in retaliation for its decision to join NATO. The Kremlin has denied that. The Council of Europe has asked Finland to ensure it keeps its doors open for migrants seeking protection.
The closures meant many Russian speakers living in Finland were cut off from relatives. DW's Natalia Smolentceva met a family who were affected.

Many reasons. One reason is the international laws Finland has signed up for and how by the book Finland's governments always follow them (unlike a certain neighbour in the east). Keeping bordercheckpoints open for asylum seekers is in some of the human rights acts Finland has signed up to. Other reason is probably that Russia started arresting the asylum seekers for not having papers so there are not as many people waiting fro bordercrossing across the border. And then of course the dual citizens of Russia and Finland and the upcoming holidays.

Russia suddenly decided to let those in. It was against procedures that were followed before. Border is closed until Russia follow procedures that have been agreed. If they are unable to do that, the border remain closed.

I don’t agree with the Council of European making Finland keep borders open! Why can’t Europe grow a backbone! Because Brussels is too far away to feel the claw of Putin! No wonder Putin thinks Europe is weak-Thry ARE WEAK! Finland needs to keep all its borders closed for as long as it takes! The only Fonish border that counts is the one with Russia!

Let's have an international law that allows travelling without travel documents. By car, by plane, by ferry. As of now there is no law forcing countries to accept entry of undocumented travellers. Especially from "safe" country like Russia. You may try entering Australia or USA without proper documents.

@@jujujuugg444 The only sentence here to agree with is - by car, by plane, by ferry. The rest must be corrected. Without travel documents it would be difficult to claim a particular seat. Even within the Schengen area or the USA one has to have an ID. There is actually a law forcing to accept undocumented people - Article 14 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Especially, from the countries not listed as the "safe third" ones. Do not know how is it in Australia, but thousands of people arrive to the USA daily without any documents and get admitted for processing.
