I lost a friend to depression recently. He was my closest online friend and I would stay up and spend many sleepless nights talking to him. Now I spend many sleepless nights thinking about the time we used to have. What I regret the most is not being able to fully be there for him since the distance made it very hard. The news of his passing came as a big shock and I can relate it to the lyrics in the beginning of this song. I will forever have regrets of things I didn't say however I truly hope that he knew how much respect and appreciation I had and still have for him. Sometimes I listen back to our old voice messages and I will forever miss those times his notifications lit up my phone screen.

I lost my best friend at the end of high school and I still have dreams of her time to time and think about her. That was over 6 years ago. You expect friends to be there forever. I have lost friends in the past that hurt as bad as losing a lover or a relative. And I know how dfficult it is to express that hurt. I don't know if it really helps or not, but the shared experience seems to take the edge off of the lonely part of it. Hurt thus seems to be multi-faceted. I don't think I'm ever gonna stop going back to this song, every lyric hits so hard and it's so relatable to me. Me and my best friend stopped talking not long after I turned 20, I was heartbroken basically to put a long story short we had become very different people and had such a big disagreement that I couldn't look at this person the same anymore, I was continually writing songs about him but couldn't release any as I felt like it would have made things definite that we just aren't friends anymore I remember listening to this track one day and just breaking down in tears over how perfectly relatable this became, what a masterpiece of a song you've made Finneas we love you.

*”i know i’ll be alright, but i’m not tonight”* i think about that lyric often. i’m generally a very realistic, practical person. i wouldn’t say i’m an optimist but i just see things as they are. while falling into a place of overwhelming sadness, i have the ability to assure myself that its “just the moment”. but even so, it’s such a melancholy, lonely, and hopeless sensation. such a simple lyric that embodies a complex feeling so perfectly. finneas is pure genius.

I’ve always interpreted this song as the singer losing himself. His past self was the friend he lost. The first part of the song is describing how something just silently fades from your life, like you don’t even notice it leaving until it’s gone. That’s him growing up, forgetting who he used to be and not realizing it until now. Then he goes on to describe how his present self is “on the mend”, or improving from his past life. In the chorus, he says he will be fine without his past life, but all he can do is write about it (his previous relationships, his past experiences, etc.) People are telling him to move on from his past life, but his career is literally built on reliving it through songs. He goes on to explain that even though he’s 20 and rich, he can’t help but miss the years when he wasn’t in the spotlight. Finally, the phrase “how the hell did I lose a friend I never had” is essentially saying that he didn’t like who he was before, or just never had peace with himself until that point. He was never able to befriend himself, or enjoy who he was before, yet he still feels sad reminiscing about his younger, fame-free years escaping him. *EDIT:* Yes, I know this probably isn’t what Finneas wrote the song about. It’s just fun to think of stories behind the songs regardless of the author’s intentions sometimes.

the first time I heard this song, back then when it was released in 2019, I was having a hard time breaking up with my long best friend and boyfriend of 5,5 years. "I lost a friend" related to me in a hard way. Now I'm listening to the song in my happiest phase of my life

We have this great connection as a person which we could really reflect on each other. I value him greater than a friend or a guy but rather as a person . We knew that infatuation couldn’t win over the relationship(as friend) we never expected to happen . One day I received a message and to my dismay I found out that she’s a wife of my friend and they’ve been married for 5 years. I never knew that he has a wife as he told me he has no gf at the moment and his wife said that he’s been cheating on her with me , I was so nervous and asked my friend to clarify everything. He admitted that he did a big mistake that would cost our friendship and his relationship for his wife come to an end ,he knew that anything he could say won’t justify everything had happened . At the end I chose to listen coz I knew there’s always a root why we did something out of impulse (It might be his wife is emotionally unavailable to him or it could be him causes him to find someone to talk to and didn’t expect that he would like me as a person and become infatuated at the same time ) I just wanna hear him saying his mistakes and remorse for hurting our feelings . I asked him if the connection we unexpectedly feel for each other was just one sided or the connection that we had as a person was beyond infatuation . I was happy finding out that it’s truth that for one in a million he found great connection with me as a person (not romantically speaking). We couldn’t stay friends after all , he apologized and asked for forgiveness and I forgave him wholeheartedly for deceiving both his wife and me . We finally say goodbye and sever our connection . That’s how we close that certain chapter of our friendship in our life . He’s definitely the friend I lost but I never had . 😔

His friend symbolised whatever made him happy, and he used to know what that was. Insidiously, depression kicked in yet he assured himself that he'd be fine. But that's the thing about depression, it creeps in and stays with you, regardless of not knowing what you are depressed about. Hence, being sad over a lost friend that you never had. It's a great song that each individual can relate to from different lenses. Curious tho, did anyone else interpret it this way?
