As a swede who did his military service in a mortar company, this warms my hearth! While the Swedish people is not very interested in defending their country anymore, know that the few of us who still are engaged in the "hemvärnet"/"territorial army" appreciate that the old saying "Sweden will fight to the last finn!" sadly still hold true. Some things I know and am allowed to say; -We have enough heavy artillery to line up the whole border w/ Russia and then there is light artillery, mortars and light/heavy rocket launchers (Like Katyuashas but waaaay better in every aspect) -We use several types of munitions for different means, for example, they can be timed to explode above you so your cover becomes useless, or underground after impact, demolishing your bunkers base structure and sinking it into ground, and ofc, there are the AP-High explosive shells designed to counter heavy tanks, just to name a few ;P - You will never know what FDF actually has/is cabaple of unless you have a security clearence. 75% of our conscripts know what they need to, everyone else not even that.

***** If you compare it to driving in a simulator vs driving on the road in a city. You're only going to be a good driver if you've actually driven on the roads. @mrjoke112
@mrjoke112 9 лет назад
raimesey Some training can be taken very far. One heroic figure from the Winter War was Simo Häyhä. He had hunted and shot with his rifle a lot before the war and that training didn't go to waste. He ends up killing over 500 russians with his rifle setting a world record. Now to think of artillery. All they would ever need to do in a real situation is exactly what they have been trained for. But you had a good point with real experience. It's very valuable for many military roles.

During the Soviet assault 1944, all the guns and cannons up to 230 mm calibre, cenralized their fire on the breaking point with a devastating success.The mistake of Govorov was an attempt to make a breakthrough according to the books, but, instead of front line barrage, the Finns made pinpoint arty fire. Meanwhile, in the woods, soviet heavy tanks were destroyed one by one by bazookas, by AT guns and so it went
@ilkkaaaltonen3918
@ilkkaaaltonen3918 9 лет назад
Just say 12 artillery battalions, one target, impact of 250 guns, all shells in one second on target. One minute before Red Army's strategic offensive in the North. It was devastating. The ONLY RED ARMY strategic offensive was halted. Then Russians though hmm, maybe Berlin is more important than Helsinki, we just gained land about enough to bury our dead...

@herptek
@herptek Год назад
One reason for that success was that signals intelligence had broken enemy messages and knew in advance the staging areas and the time for the attack in Tali-Ihantala. Artillery was able to be concentrated exactly where it was needed and exactly when it was needed on mass. The airforce also threw all its bombing formations in to add to the carnage. The enemy assault against the VKT-line was successfully neutralized there already in the staging area, as the barrage separated enemy infantry from the tanks as they could not follow them under fire. There were reports of the artillery fire being so intensive as to grind down even tanks.

I wonder how many Western armies still train for this, 800+ rounds in a heavy strike which is then rolled forward is basically dealing with a Russian Mech. Division breakthrough... As a reservist AT man I definitely appreciate the artillery dealing with this at 10 000m instead of my platoon at 200m (if we're lucky enough to fire that deep in the forest!) - should have been awake for maths and physics at school...

Klaus Supertramp Soz they have Brigades now too... this should impact (hopefully) at least the forward elements of 1+1 battalions so should be close enough on a tactical lvl (if one company is 9 T-72Mxx, plus BMP-2s and MT-LB's for supporting infantry (who would be on the flanks anyway)... Finnish Artillery has so much ammo that our Rovajärvi "loppuamunnat", "end firings" are quite an show. Its much, much cheaper to fire the ammo, than handle overdue ammo as hazardious waste. Many gun crews just shove ammo to breach of gun as fast they can. Finns do not care of gun barrel erosion. We have much more guns we actually need.

Does anyone know what the hand gestures they're using mean?
@mcengiz9156
@mcengiz9156 8 лет назад
The one on the far R side calculates approximate distances between two explosions compared to the width of his hand, his arm length and their approx. distance to the target.

Artillery observers calculate the spread and accuracy of the hits with their hands. One finger is 30 milliradians and one fist is 150 milliradians. These observations along with possible corrections are then sent to the artillery so they know their accuracy and can correct their shooting accordingly. In big strikes like this you pretty much already have the artillery dialed in, so it's just for reporting their spread. When firing the first rounds or at a moving target, the corrections are sent in.

120mm heavy mortars, 130mm artillery guns and 155mm gun-howizers. To top that one would pretty much need something like a naval gun. For closer perspective, here is what effect on target with those 130mm guns looks like: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IUvcdKGD-FM.html

Depending on sources, all combined Finland fields over 1,500 pieces of artillery, SPG, MLRS and 120mm mortars. A very considerable indirect firepower, possibly no 1 in W Europe.

We have 8 times as much artillery as United Kingdom, 1/2 of tanks they have, roughly 1/3 fighters they have and 2 times as many men in wartime army, but additional 500 000 trained men in reserve. Our nation has more territory than "great" Britain but less people than in city of London. We propably have one of largest army to citizens ratio in the world.

ajk also add the artillery taken out of service, which we could use when in need. ~5k pieces of artillery
