Done the traditional finnish way with boiling the handle in water and using a finnish style wedge - snake head wedge. Open the full video description for more information.
_________________
Boiling the axe handle for 30-60 minutes makes the wood soft - the axe head can go down a bit longer on the wood handle, the snakehead wedge can a lot easier split the wood and expand the wood above the axe head like a big "mushroom" making it impossible for the axe head to fly off doing use. If done right will the axe head be a perfect tight fit on the handle after a few days of slow drying. This kind of wedge have a hook and it will not be able to jump up doing use.

Location: Denmark - my own property.

Most asked questions:
1. What wood do you use?
Elm - but I prefer ash. The Finnish tradition is birch for the axe handle and pine for the wedge.
2. What oil did you use?
Tung oil.
3. What do you use to clamp the wood?
Shaving horse and bowl horse.
4. What axe?
I handle a Finnish axe made by Kellokoski model number 18. It is not mass produced any more. Use a russian axe made by Zik to shape the hande, not mass produced any more.

You have the same respect for the tool and the wood you work with that I saw in my dad; he was a finish carpenter. It's a special relationship that real craftsmen or women have for the craft. Thank you for this lovely video Rune. Donna

This is so interesting for me. Especially recently I have just longed to live more simply and in the midst of nature. Your videos are a wonderful insight to that. That's a beautiful axe you made, I'm from Finland so the title caught my attention.

I'm glad to see that you didn't mirror polish the entire head like so many "restorations" do now. I've never seen a cool collared axe; fantastic work.

Good thing I’m a 25yo who’s decided to live their life like this to master crafting the Olde way. Reliance on EM energy to run all your equipment is a huge fatal flaw our society has. How do you get stronger? By doing. Cut the weakness out, build yourself up.

I had never seen the multi-directional split arrangement you used with the wooden wedge to retain the axe head on the handle. Looked to be very effective in locking the end of the handle to the upper end of the head, without requiring a metal wedge. Clearly an improvement over the more common single split with wedge. Greg

Hello, I like Finnish Axes and have refinished a few Billnas Axes, 12.3, 12.2 1133, 7. I have used Birch to make shaft. On one of my axes I used the 'Snake Wedge' like you demonstrated here. The Finnish People now a lot about woodsmanship and you can see that in their design of axe and skills in the forest. I find the Billnas and Kellokoski axes need a different technique in processing wood, different to English and American Axes. I enjoyed this video, thank you WS.
@jpm83
@jpm83 4 года назад
It is because they are not poll balanced like English or American axes but they are blade heavy. For me it gives a little bit more power to the cut. and that socket and downwards swooping blade gives lot of control when you are choking on the axe head when carving.
