Jari from Rovaniemi opens and eats a some of Swedish surströmming (soured herring or "rotten fish"). Lots of Finnish cursing is heard so this is M rated material. Now with English subtitles! (Although they are mostly badly translated cursing).

It's true fermented herring tastes better than it smells. But it is very salty and shall be complemented with bread, butter, onion, potato, sour cream and maybe something more. This will balance the taste. But regarding the smell: it may smell bad, but nothing close to rotten smell. Also fermented is not the same as rotten. I advice everyone who has never tried fermented herring to do it with the right complementing ingrediences. You may find it delicious!

After one year in the German navy, I learned a few important things, about Surströmming!!! 1) No sober humen creature, ever atemp, to eat this " stuff", without being under the influence 2) 96 to 98 % of the customers are men, who are surrounded by their ( drunken) friends 3) Some say, they have seen a sober Skandinavien, standing right next to a sober Bavarian, on a picture, in a Fary Tails Picturebook🤔🙄🤣😂🤣😂👍👍‼️

According to the father of one of my friends, the best way to open a can of surströmming is using a .22 caliber rifle (to keep a healthy distance) to make sure the rotten water seeps out and to save you from the stench of raw sewage. The more common suggestion is to open the tin can under water, like in a bucket of water. Even so, you risk contaminating an area the size of a quarter to half an acre (1000-2000 square meters) with the smell of sewage.

Ancient Warrior No, sour herring is a way to conserve fish If it is not cold enough. It might seem like a biological weapon though. Besides, Try open the can under running water, instead. Finns go fishing in winter on the ice and get fish that is not rotten, afterwards they go to a hot sauna and chill outside. We have so many lakes and coasts that We can do that. Sure We have salted fish, silli but not fermented.

I have always wondered why was surströmming invented in swede, but not in use in finland? It is the horrific smell? Or the principle of NOT eating rotten food? Did swedes have badder famine than Finns in the 1100bc+ or were Finns just more creative to make food from "nothing" "pettuleipä" bread that is made of flours and tree bark... Or not to eat rotten fish or any fermented food (alcohol does not count). My point is, we dont eat surströmming in finland, but our neighbour does... Why?
