Yep, when I think fun I think Fionna Apple... That a woman actually is holding herself accountable (which is the rarest trait in women and their greatest flaw in general) seems to be a concept too hard to grasp, for the reasons of its rarity I suppose.

Fiona Apple was 20yrs old when this was released. She’s 43 now. The public went nuts when this video released in 1997, thinking she was under 18 at the time. 😂 Her lyrics are legendary and timeless. 🙌🏼🙌🏼

Another good one that was on her first album was "Sleep to Dream" and "Shadowboxer". She had such a unique sound when she first came out, and still does to this day.

It should be noted that Fiona Apple wasn't very pleased with how the video came out and when it won the vma it felt that ppl just saw the superficial side of her and hence, her infamous "the world is BS" speech came out. Ppl were pissed and so was the industry. MTV played her MVs at weird hours. Fiona Apple is more than just the crazy ex gf. She has a history of trauma she endured and you can see how much she has grown and how well she expressed herself in her songs thru the years. 🙄

Yo Jayy, You nailed it... She's feeling guilty about her power over someone and taking advantage of it. She was just a baby when she made this album and was discovered by an A&R rep while baby-sitting that rep's daughter. She won a Grammy that year. I think it was 1997.

What's weird is that I had those exact same sheets as a little kid maybe circa 80-85 and Elliott in E.T. had those on his bed and they were in this vid in the 90s. My mom remembered them and said they were some kinda designer sheets that she got in the 70s, but you will still see those in period pieces from the 70s on. They were in No Country For Old Men, too, which was set in the year 1980.

Try this out. It's the soundboard recording of a song called Ladies from her last album, before the album was released. Video starts 40 seconds in, so you can watch her impassioned delivery. The song explores how women treat their partner's ex-girlfriends as competition, but she implores the ladies in her ex's "revolving door" to see that "no love is like any other love" & she invites them to try on the dress in the closet that didn't fit her, since it belonged to yet another ex of this man who was "very kind". It pairs up with Newspaper, another song on Fetch the Bolt Cutters, which talks how her ex demonized her to his new wife. Most Fiona fans think FTBC explores her feelings after her break-up with a movie producer/director who left her for Maya Rudolph. The pair have now been married for years, so Newspaper in particular seems addressed to Maya. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m8F5wBq6Xcw.html

Fiona is one of the all time greats. And a surprising amount of famous black musicians love her (Jay-Z, Frank Ocean, Kanye, Lil Nas X, SZA, Jhene Aiko). Her album, Fetch the Bolt Cutters, was the most critically acclaimed album of last year and won her a couple more Grammys. But her whole catalog is strong. It’s only five albums over 25 years. So, it’s not that much to get through.

I find it hard to listen to Fiona Apple, though I love what I have heard, cos she goes to such a dark place with her songs. She wrote this song at 17, and in this video, she was 19. She was raped at 12, and subsequently developed an eating disorder, if I recall, purposefully so she would be "unattractive" to men. Another song I would recommend, in an equally disturbing vein, is "Mother Mother" by Tracy Bonham (ideally the TV set version of the video, as she made two).

Fiona was a troubled girl growing up, had a pretty hard story. I remember her on Howard Stern years ago talking about it. She messed up at an MTV video award show in 97 by saying, "This is all BS" (meaning all the glam and money and nonsense in the music industry) and tho she was speakin truth, the way she did it fell flat and she took a lot of heat and criticism for it. It was unfortunate. And then Chris Rock who was hosting came out and said she'll be OK, she just needs to eat a sandwich, which pissed her off because she had body issues and weight issues. Not the right girl to say that about by Chris and he realized that after the fact. She called him a "burnt match" in anger, a racial term if you picture it in your head. He was also on Stern and said it's OK and didn't continue it on when he asked him about the match comment. I remember thinking that Rock knew he had stepped into a cow plop and didn't want to go any further down that road because women w/ eating and psychological/emotional issues and all that weren't a good demographic to make food jokes about. It was a lose-lose for Chris, so he just basically moved on.

Jayy, almost all of us thought the way you did when this came out, HOWEVER WE WERE ALL WRONG, lol. In Fiona’s interview with Rolling Stone about this song and video she stated “ But that’s exactly what the video is about. When I say, ‘I’ve been a bad, bad girl, I’ve been careless with a delicate man’ - well, in a way I’ve been careless with a delicate audience, and I’ve gotten success that way, and I’ve lived in my ego that way, and I feel bad about it. And that’s what the song’s about, and therefore, that’s what the video looks like.” Just to clear up what most of us thought when this song & video came out. If you want to read her interview it’s Rolling Stone January 22, 1998. I got it as soon as it came out.

I love this song... it was awesome to listen to this as a 90s teen!!! The video, showing an 18-year-old Fiona Apple stripping down to her underwear and wandering around a basement filled with lots of young bodies, is one of the most controversial ever to hit MTV. Apple has a dissociated look throughout, and the setting is rather seedy, implying it's where immoral acts take place and are sometimes recorded - at one point we see Apple on a TV screen, as if someone is making a video for the "barely legal" market. It was directed by Mark Romanek, whose credits include "Closer" by Nine Inch Nails and "Rain" by Madonna. "We wanted something blatantly erotic," he told Entertainment Weekly. His plan was to have Apple play the part more lively, with some booty shaking, but she did it in her natural melancholy way instead - nobody has asked her to shake booty since. Apple was on board with the concept and remained on good terms with Romanek, but sometimes got uneasy discussing it over and over in interviews. "I decided if I was going to be exploited, then I would do the exploiting myself," became her sound bite. Her most lucid and nuanced explanation came in an interview with MTV shortly after it was released in the summer of 1997, when she said: "I'm treating the audience that is watching this video the same way the character in the song treats a man: Look at me, look how pretty I am. I don't have to give you anything else because look how pretty I am. And look how successful I am, look how much power I can get just by letting this light shine on me in a certain way."
