The Sleeping Beauty unit of the Magic Kingdom's new Festival of Fantasy parade features a battle between Prince Phillip and the fire-breathing Maleficent dragon along with her henchmen. This video shows the full battle sequence, beginning with fairies Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather leading the group and featuring all of Maleficent's abilities including moving her feet, head, wings, and tail, spinning internal gears, and spitting fire multiple times.

Another Disney first in this parade! Sure, this is not the first time the Cinderella Castle had a visit from a dragon in a parade. But, there is no comparison between Pete's Dragon from Main Street Electrical and the foreboding monstrosity of Maleficent Dragon that now lives in WDW. :D

Since the spinning wheel was added in the center of the stomach, it would have been so cool if Sleeping Beauty was just laying down like she just pricked her finger. I don't know why, but that seems very awesome in my head

I wish the princess were more involved in character greets and parades and shows, not just heavily make it princess themed, but I love seeing my fav prince fight a dragon!

They need to built something similar to this for the Hollywood studios fantasmic show, since Disneyland got their new dragon. since I barely ever go to Disneyland, I don't get to see the new dragon as often ( other than videos, which don't do it justice) so I would LOVE to see a new dragon in Fantasmic in Orlando!

The new dragon was supposed to be released in the summer of '09 along with lots of other enhancements to Disney nighttime entertainment. In fact, it was supposed to be the crown jewel of the event... but it broke down various times, even missing the summer event, before finally making its appearance on Sep. 1, '09. I don't think the Orlando resort wants to run that risk again...

Disney was working on the concept for adding the dragon to the parade long before Maleficent. The movie and the parade just happened to have the right timing.

As an update, thank goodness this dragon was not promoting the film. Maleficent was a major disappointment....
